Are Bootcut Jeans Really back?

polyhymnia · 11/10/2015 15:56

Just that, really. I usually wear skinny jeans, though did have some quite nice M and S Autograph Girlfriend ones this summer.

Wondering about a change and see bootcuts are supposed to be 'back'. Like this:
www.nydj.eu/bootcut-in-blue-premium-denim-95476lt-larchmont-wash??

Can wear them (as I can skinnies) because, though large, I'm tall and long-legged. But, though I hope I'm not a slave to 'fashion,' not sure if I'd feel stylish in them after quite a few years of feeling frumpy if I put on my old ones.

It's a gradual thing but they're creeping back. It was the same with skinnies: lots of people (me included) saying we'd never wear them and we all know how that ended. I'm really torn because I know flares/bootcuts suit me better but I can't stand the soggy knees.

bigTillyMint · 12/10/2015 14:44

How are proper flares impractical?Confused

Boyfriend jeans look awful on me too!

OnlyLovers · 12/10/2015 14:54

Haven't worn bootcuts for so long, I can't remember if they suited me!

I love my skinnies and will have to be held down and cut out of them.

Lucked · 12/10/2015 15:02

I used to love bootcut in the late 90s and thought I looked fabulous but tried on a pair the other day and I wasn't convinced. I think I might try a flare. I am bored to death of skinny jeans though, I got great wear out of some rolled up boyfriend jeans over the summer.

HopefulAnxiety · 12/10/2015 15:34

For some people (including myself) plain old straight-leg jeans or rolled-up boyfriend jeans are much more flattering than bootcut - I wore bootcuts to death as a teenager and it took me years to work out why I looked so stumpy. I'm a short hourglass so really need a more elongating style.

Quornmakesmefart · 12/10/2015 16:14

I still wear bootcut jeans sometimes but with converse or trainers generally. If I'm going for a smarter look with boots or heels I think skinnies look better. I also wouldn't wear them as short as in your link op - when they're short enough to flap about you're getting into mom jeans territory I think.

I agree the ones in the pic look more like straight leg, but they need to be longer. IMO th only jeans that look good as ankle grazers are skinnies (but I am no expert)

apinchofsugar · 12/10/2015 16:27

Wear the jeans that suit you, it really doesn't matter as long as the cut fits you.

The awful mumsy styling of the photo however...Shock yuk, anyone would age at least 20 years dressing like that.

Outcomesthebunnyofdeath · 12/10/2015 17:16

Long bootcuts always gave me some leg length (with heels), so I wouldn't mind those coming back so much. I also swore I would NEVER wear skinnies - that turned out to be a lie.

The ones in the pic make me shudder though. Too short.

bialystockandbloom · 12/10/2015 17:25

Trick is to make sure they're still skinny on the thigh/knee, and yes as everyone has said, long.

I never stopped wearing that style - my favourite jeans ever are these A&G ones, which look much better on than in the picture (even though I'm not 5ft10 with 36in leg!). Bought them three years ago, and am dreading them wearing out as can't find them again.

The right length/skinniness of thigh definitely leg lengthening, so much more flattering than skinnies on everyone, imo. Even if you do feel a bit like Trinny & Susannah c.2002.

EcclefechanTart · 12/10/2015 17:27

What is "mumsy" about photo, please? Blazer, top and jeans seems ok to me. The only thing I don't like is the shoes - but that's because they're too high, not too mumsy.

burnishedsilver · 12/10/2015 17:36

It's wet and windy where I live bigtilly. Wet denim flapping in the wind is pretty unpleasant.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 12/10/2015 17:45

I wear skinnies with long boots and bootcut with wedge sandals or ankle boots. Wear what you like and suits your body shape.

polyhymnia · 12/10/2015 17:51

I personally find the styling in the pic I posted pretty unstylish and did say higher up I wouldn't style mine like that. I think what mainly does it is the high heels, with feet and all of shoes on show at bottom of the jeans. I don't actually wear high heels anyway - would wear with Converse like shoes, etc.

It's this styling which also makes the jeans look short. I hate short jeans and would never buy (except deliberate ankle- grazers). But the inside leg measurement of those jeans is actually 33 ''. I've often bought NYDJ before, and they're always that sort of length, so in fact at 5'9', with very long legs, I end up having to have them taken up slightly. So pic very misleading.

I agree with you burnished. I have some Citizen bootcuts at the back of the wardrobe (jumble sale find) and whenever I try them on, my thighs just disappear. But I don't wear heels and I'm not sure if I can put up with the sogginess again.

LaBuenaVida · 12/10/2015 18:22

Just tentatively gone back to bootcut after years of skinnies - and they feel wonderful! Mine are the Gap Curve - love Gap jeans - and I just suddenly got tired of sausage legs. Although from 2013, here's an article for anyone considering embracing the boot...

Quornmakesmefart · 12/10/2015 21:33

eccle to me that pic looks mumsie because none of it fits well (IMO). The jeans are too short and the blazer sleeves are too short. And it's not an outfit, just three random items of clothing slung together, which also makes clothes look frumpy I think. I would maybe add a scarf with a bit of blue and cream in to bring it all together for example...

mayum1 · 12/10/2015 22:17

When the young ones start wearing bootcuts it will be skinnies that will be seen as mum jeans! So wear what you like and what you think flatters you :)

That said, boyfriend jeans flatter me the most! Next bootcut, flares...skinnies, it took a while for me to start wearing them but I guess I got used to them.

Rivercam · 12/10/2015 22:24

I'm a classic pear and haven't stopped wearing them either. In fact, I don't possess any trousers which aren't bootcut, apart from some pj trousers.

I've won them since Trinny ans Suzanne first recommended them for pears (showing my age!), and I have tried on other trousers, but they never suit me.

Glitteryred · 12/10/2015 22:46

Just wear whatever style of jeans flatters your specific body shape the most. Why would you wear what's 'in' if it doesn't do you justice.

Parpaltunnel · 13/10/2015 03:17

They keep saying this but I'm clinging to my skinnies until their very last fashionable gasp. For my money you're better off investing in a good pair of boyfriend jeans (bad ones are the most unflattering jeans ever made, but a good pair can be life changing).

Vernonon · 13/10/2015 03:47

Aargh - i sorted out my drawers last week and took three (pristine) pairs to the charity shop!

MargoReadbetter · 13/10/2015 03:54

I don't see a problem. Wear what suits you best and you'll feelconfident and stylish.

TheDowagerCuntess · 13/10/2015 05:27

Agree that the jeans in the OP look like (to short) straight legs rather than boot-cuts.

I think skinnies are starting to look dated - especially ones that effectively look like denim leggings.

I prefer boy/girlfriend style which skim and taper rather than cling (like skinnies with Lycra/stretch do). Although without rips.

TheDowagerCuntess · 13/10/2015 05:27

*too short

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 13/10/2015 05:30

I am devoted to bootcuts because I look like a giant parsnip in skinnies and a sack of spuds in relaxed cut jeans. I think people should wear the jeans that suit them best and ignore whatever is apparently in or out.
