Does this dress make you think gorgeous and autumnal or resembles a pair of curtains?

I can't decide...what do you think of this dress please?

I quite like it. Doesn't make me think of curtains at all. Lovely rich colours. What were you thinking of wearing it with?

RattleAndRoll · 08/10/2015 13:33

I don't like it, I think because it's velvet not the because of the pattern/colour.
But it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If you like it, buy it.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 08/10/2015 13:36

Curtains. It is the combination of the fabric and the print.

ovenchips · 08/10/2015 13:37

It doesn't remind me of curtains, but it does honestly remind me of a 40 year old carpet my parents still have in their front room.

Though I am sure if I was looking at dress on a real live person without the 'curtain' reference uppermost in my mind I wouldn't think that at all. It's a really nice shape etc. Smile

ThroughTheLongNight · 08/10/2015 13:37

Oh but it does matter what people think, I don't want people saying ooh look at Through in her dress made out of curtains!

I am looking for a dress for a dinner party in a couple of weeks for very special occasion.

OP posts:
Lottapianos · 08/10/2015 13:39

I would never look at you and think 'oh dear, curtain dress!'. I like a bit of velvet Smile

Asteria36 · 08/10/2015 13:42

Bit curtainy, but pretty. The trouble is printed velvet can look a bit cheap in rl. Might be an idea to see it in the shop before spending £79 on it!

MouldyPeach · 08/10/2015 13:42

To me it looks like an 'art teacher' dress, not a dinner party/very special occasion dress.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 08/10/2015 13:57

It definitely isn't a very special occasion dress. The cut is too girly.

nilbyname · 08/10/2015 14:01

That's a frumps-ville dress. Avoid!

The length- mumsy
The a line- yuk
The pattern/colour- love
The velvet- don't mind
The neckline- frump!

nilbyname · 08/10/2015 14:02

Have a look on lk Bennett or phase eight

nilbyname · 08/10/2015 14:05

This is quite pretty www.phase-eight.com/fcp/product/phase-eight/dresses/klaudia-dress/203199000

ThroughTheLongNight · 08/10/2015 14:12

Thanks Nilby I don't really like ties at the back of a dress.

I usually hate phase eight, but quite like this.

nilbyname · 08/10/2015 14:14

That's the monsoon dress again! Wink

Winniethewylde · 08/10/2015 14:18

Hmm, I don't know what it is about it but I think it's frumpy. Particularly the scoop back, trying to be sexy but failing.

ThroughTheLongNight · 08/10/2015 14:18

Really? Grin

I clearly need help. The monsoon one would be well below the knee as I am 5'4"

I think a lot of my wardrobe is mumsy/frumpy. I like A line.

OP posts:
Orangeanddemons · 08/10/2015 14:21

I would think more sofa than curtains..

musicmaiden · 08/10/2015 14:22

Oooh, now you see, I think the one nilbyname linked to is way more frumpy than the OP's dress! Horses for courses, I guess.

I quite like it, but do agree it's one to see/try on in store, as it might look cheap/frumpy off the willowy young model type (although you may fit that description for all I know, Through!)

Not sure it's right for the occasion you describe, either.

nilbyname · 08/10/2015 14:25

Well the phase eight one is a bit frumpy, but it's fitted which is better and the colours are more classic.

What size are you?

ThroughTheLongNight · 08/10/2015 14:28

I am size 12 - 14 depending on the shop. I am Apple shaped so prefer dresses that disguise the mumtum.

OP posts:
Asteria36 · 08/10/2015 14:29

Depends what your normal style is? I have worked out what it is about it that was so familiar - late 90's art college! I used to wear something very similar with battered DM's and my great-grandmothers floor length tweed coat! Not really special dinner party - id say it was more of a winter daytime dress.

ThroughTheLongNight · 08/10/2015 14:30

I am neither willowy, young or a model type Music Grin

burnishedsilver · 08/10/2015 14:33

Its very Riverdance.

ThroughTheLongNight · 08/10/2015 14:33

Okay, I am hosting the dinner party for dh's 50th, in the country, so thinking floating around country pile rented cottage and curling up in front of log fire sort of evening. I think I made it sound grander than it is.

OP posts:
Asteria36 · 08/10/2015 14:35

That style isn't great on Apple shapes - v thin or pear shaped would be better in that. Believe me - it will not disguise a mumtum at all. It's perfect for disguising a bum, but your waist/tummy is massively on show.
