It's getting a bit ridiculous - i'm taking ten a day...please tell me I am not the only one...

iron
probiotic
biotin
sodium hyuronalate
MSM
CO10
magnesium oil
vitamin c

the top three I need for various health issues....the rest...its pure neuroticism, right?

Notoedike · 06/10/2015 05:51

Vit D - so hard to get enough from food and crappy weather.

Hopefully · 06/10/2015 07:00

Ummmm.... None. What are they all for? I get absolutely tons of daylight, but I would consider a vitamin d supplement if I had any symptoms of deficiency.

I go through stages of taking fermented cod liver oil (meant to be great for skin and immune system), but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

lavendersun · 06/10/2015 07:04

None apart from Floradix and B12 injections for life long anaemia/pernicious anaemia.

I would rather have a healthy diet than pop supplements.

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 06/10/2015 07:27

I take vitamin d and calcium.

The advice is to only supplement if there's a genuine deficiency that can't be addressed by a healthy diet. Vitamin d fits that criteria for the majority of people who live in Britain. For most of the year, the sunlight has insufficient uvb for us to make it in our skin, and that's not taking the fact that few of us bare our skin in sunlight regularly. Also, the recommended levels are being reassessed and they probably should be much higher.

Supplementing has been very beneficial to me.

Calcium I just do the regular amount because menopause is looms and I wish to prevent bone loss.

Notoedike · 06/10/2015 07:38

Vit D deficiency impacts so many different aspects of your health from depression to immune system right through to your bones and obesity, imo you can't afford to wait for the signs because they are sometimes too universal and subtle to pick up on.

whitewineandchocolate · 06/10/2015 07:41

Vitamin D, blood test results showed I had a huge deficiency (I'm 50), it has gone back up but I will keep taking them I think. I've just started vitamin B complex and fish oils which I'm hoping will help with some symptoms I've developed.

Glitteryfrog · 06/10/2015 07:41

None, I eat a varied diet and exercise.

Blueberrymuffint0p · 06/10/2015 08:09

I eat a varied diet and I exercise but I still take a multivitamin and I have b12 injections every 3 months.

PurpleDaisies · 06/10/2015 08:11

Another no supplements here. I (mainly) eat loads of veggies because I like them so I don't think I need them.

atticusclaw2 · 06/10/2015 08:17

I take:

a multivitamin - any old multivitamin since I'm not sure whether with the expensive ones you're just paying for the brand name.
vitamin D (due to specific deficiency)
calcium (due to specific deficiency)
evening primrose oil
Fountain beauty molecule (hyaluronic acid plus japanese knotwood extract - same thing as found in grape skins and apparently extremely good for your skin. perhaps a load of crap but it was three for two in boots)

There's no way I'd get everything through diet alone. I have a calcium deficiency even though I eat masses of cheese every single day so you really can't assume that diet is ticking all the boxes.

JennyOnAPlate · 06/10/2015 09:13

I take a multivitamin when I remember and also omega 3 6 and 9.

Pandaremote · 06/10/2015 10:15

I take fish oil. I did take vit d and a multi vitamin but I've stopped now.

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 06/10/2015 10:15

I do also take fish oil capsules.

But vitamin d is the only crucial one. It's really massively important and I don't know why the NHS isn't more on board with the issue.

Hopefully · 06/10/2015 10:23

One thing I've never been able to ascertain is that if I feel fine, have no issues etc, what are the long term implications of being vitamin D deficient? I can see calcium deficiency long term probs, but can't seem to find the same info for Vit d.

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 06/10/2015 10:30

Well, vitamin d deficiency leads to calcium deficiency in terms of absorption.

Other symptoms can be very vague. A lot of ms and me sufferers discover they're deficient. Same for depression. Just general malaise, really.

Dowser · 06/10/2015 10:41

I take vit D3 winter and summer unless I'm south of 40 degrees latitude
Vitamin b ( across the whole spectrum) drops as its meant to be good for memory
Co q 10 also good for memory
magnesium oil
Iodine topically for thyroid
Melatonin
Turmeric anti inflammatory and allegedly good for the memory
Flax seed oil
Kefir which I make for its probiotic qualities
Valerian...helps my over active mind relax for sleep

I used to religiously take my serrapeptase and I had little joint pain but somewhere along the line I let it drop and this week I've been in agony, so I started it again yesterday. Watch this space.
google Robert redfern.
I am however going to do an overhaul of my supplements do some research and write myself out a plan as I think there are huge gaps in what I'm taking. I need to get more omega 3 s into my diet for example.

I read an excellent book by jean carper a medical journalist who has looked at lots of natural supplements. Apparently Germany has led the way in clinical trials so they have proper calibrated evidence on what works and German doctors are allowed to prescribe certain supplements.

She has chapters on Co Q 10
Hypericum
Ginkgo biloba
Grapefruit fibre( eating the fruit is not good enough btw)
Glucosamine
Valerian
Milk thistle for liver
Bee pollen
Ginger
Kava
Omega 3
Kudzu
Saw palmetto
Celery and cherry juice
Licorice
Grape seed and pycnogenol
Peppermint oil
Vitamins c and e

For eg a doctor prescribed valerian with saw palmetto for a bad sport injury. Valerian relaxed the muscles and the sp reduced inflammation.

My Russian therapist in Tenerife is very much into ayurvedic medecine and has givenp me some bio triphala made from certain fruits as its a good cleanser and tonic and on this visit he's given me some brahmi which is an Indian preparation that is supposedly good for the brain.

When I have time and head space I'm going to sit down and go through my books I see what I need and when I need it. I'll probably dowse it to be sure.

I may be gone some time...lol!

Dowser · 06/10/2015 10:43

My GP who is now a homeopathic doctor advocates that we all should take vit d3 winter and summer as we are all so far north of the 40 degrees.

Hopefully · 06/10/2015 10:57

But why? I just can't get to the bottom of why we need it, I the absence of any symptoms of deficiency? If someone links an article saying (eg) there's a vastly reduced change of dementia later in life if you take Vit D for life, then I'm happy to be converted. There's a lot of reporting on it, but I can't get to the bottom of exactly why symptomless people should take it?

I appreciate this sounds very argumentative, but I genuinely do want to to know, I'm not trying to be a PITA Grin

squoosh · 06/10/2015 11:02

Low Vitamin D levels are thought to be at the root of some autoimmune conditions. I started taking it thinking it might help the psoriasis that was covering my legs.

It did and I'm eternally grateful!

atticusclaw2 · 06/10/2015 11:04

Your body needs vitamin D in order to absorb the calcium which is essential for your bones. Hence my calcium deficiency despite eating my own body weight in cheese every day.

Notoedike · 06/10/2015 11:08

My life long eczema disappeared when I started to take Vit D - also seasonal depression disappeared. Appreciate this is anedotal but I don't need more eveidence than clear skin. Grin

Hopefully · 06/10/2015 11:28

The calcium thing is interesting - will read more on that. Things like SAD/skin issues etc are proper symptoms, and I can see that solving a deficiency has a real benefit there.

Knackeredknitter67 · 06/10/2015 11:40

I take Vitamin D, calcium
biotin
iron + vitamin C
fermented cod liver oil
and a multivitamin/mineral, because I have it and want to use it up rather than throw it away
Really need an overhaul

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 06/10/2015 12:22

My youngest son has constant eczema/something on elbows and knees. I think we'll give him a chewable multi plus a chewable vitamin d and see if there's any improvement.

Dowser · 06/10/2015 12:25

Unfortunately our soil is very depleted of nutrients so our food isnot the quality it used Tobe.

Stress, sleep deprivation, over work all play havoc with our immune systems. Our immune systems are our first line of defence against cancers, viruses and so on. Weneed to build healthy immune systems. Afaik cancer cells are rogue cells in our bodies that our healthy immune systems seek out and destroy so it's vital to build up strong, healthy immune systems.

So I need to use supplements to support my immune system.

As I age ifindsomeceramic it a constant struggle. I dontbounceback like I did inmy youth.
