Why are waterfall cardigans back in?

I'm confused. I had a big clear out of my wardrobe and chucked away two long cardigan coats and a few waterfall cardigans I used to wear to work. I thought they were frumpy.

I went shopping yesterday and many of the knitwear and coats were open waterfall style very similar to the ones I'd thrown away. I'm thinking of buying more now Confused.

I had noticed this as well OP... I was a bit surprised as i thought they were totally OUT, but I see them all over the place at the moment. I never got rid of mine though, frumpy or not, I like them!!

polyhymnia · 01/10/2015 18:52

I really hate them - specially on y large bust! Sorry to hear they're coming back

daftyburd · 01/10/2015 18:54

Oh I hate them too. The sleeveless waterfall style jackets are receiving a lot of hate from me right now!

Greengardenpixie · 01/10/2015 19:54

I cant say i like them either. All that extra material at the front annoys me. Ive yet to find one that i actually like wearing.

happyending14 · 01/10/2015 20:23

I tried one on with a belt around it. I still looked huge.

I blame M&S Per Una for the fashion crime that is the waterfall cardigan...

IWantFairyWings · 01/10/2015 20:48

Surely they're better than those round-necked buttoned cardigans on a big bust? They do seem to have returned quickly, but thank god, there's one thing in fashion that I (not two-dimensional) can wear!

FrustratedFrugal · 01/10/2015 20:55

I adore long lean maxi cardis - this Chloe for example and also a lean gray one but waterfalls - nope.

Why are waterfall cardigans back in?
polyhymnia · 01/10/2015 22:37

I personally think cardigans in general are a problem if you have a really big bust, as I do. Know what Iwant means about buttoned versions - they can look frumpy. But I think waterfalls are even worse - I'd look like a ship in full sail in them. As I would in the awful blankets/ ponchos that sadly seem to be everywhere this season!

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 01/10/2015 22:41

i dislike waterfall cardis and jackets and I LOVE a good cardigan and have many many of them in many styles. I just look huge, square and dumpy in waterfall shapes, i just can't make them work for me so they are a big no from me

RNBrie · 01/10/2015 22:46

Thats a good point poly I can't believe ponchos are back in either!!

PrimalLass · 01/10/2015 22:59

I have a couple from Hush that I like. They are very thin though, which helps.

DickDewy · 01/10/2015 23:07

I do not get the waterfall cardigans (weren't they dubbed vulva or vagina cardigans on here once?), but I have 2 of these new season ponchos from Jigsaw and I bloody love them.

amazonianwoman · 02/10/2015 00:21

Dislike waterfall cardis too but love the Jigsaw poncho dickdewy - tried one on couldn't decide which colour to go for. Which do you have? Thinking khaki...

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/10/2015 00:42

I like cardigans, but slimline, and not too long.

I don't think the voluminous top half look that many shops are full of looks good on anyone, bar stick thin 6-footers, and waterfall cardigans are the worst of both worlds. Voluminous and lanky.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 02/10/2015 00:44

Because enough people like them, I suppose.

Blueturquoise · 02/10/2015 06:23

I too dislike waterfall cardis - however they do serve a purpose and I find them perfect for layering as cooler weather comes in.
Have found them especially useful during pregnancy.
However ponchos / wraps - ugh - all I can think of is Wild West movies or picnic blankets. And as for sleeveless pointless cardis - like waist coats from hell.
Sadly I think the line about if you did the trend once avoid when it comes around again might ring true here. Too many memories of naff school days !

There s a fine line between frumpy and fashionable though with waterfall cardi s and I m sometimes now sure which side I m teetering on Smile

happyending14 · 02/10/2015 06:32

Agree about the ponchos and wraps. I would be swamped in one. I think if you are very tall and slim you might get away with one.

I get cold in the winter. Most of the coats and long cardigans in the shops don't even do up, they just drape. I like to be zipped up warm and tight.

I wore ponchos first time round....mid/late 60's?
Like OP I've recently sent my waterfall cardigans to the charity shop (along with two wool wraps....) just as the 'latest' fashion emerged Hmm

RNBrie · 02/10/2015 07:01

Ponchos were a thing when I was in my 20s as well, so about 10 years ago...(ish)... I had a couple. That Jigsaw one is really nice!!

I like a long cardigan but they have to be to my knees, the kind that frugal linked. Waterfall cardis that end at my thighs and even point at them... no thanks.

Ponchos? Why? Useless in the rain and how do you carry anything? Never understood them.

lurkingabit · 02/10/2015 09:14

Can't understand their return either. I don't think I've ever seen them look good on anybody. My 5'10", size 8 colleague wears them and they're awful, even on her.

PetiteBateau · 02/10/2015 09:25

I dislike waterfall cardigans but I like big cardigany coats in autumn / winter but no ruffly waterfall vulvic ripples Grin

MsBojangles · 02/10/2015 09:58

Capes are around too and I don't quite understand their function.
