Why are waterfall cardigans back in?

I'm confused. I had a big clear out of my wardrobe and chucked away two long cardigan coats and a few waterfall cardigans I used to wear to work. I thought they were frumpy.

I went shopping yesterday and many of the knitwear and coats were open waterfall style very similar to the ones I'd thrown away. I'm thinking of buying more now Confused.

Hate waterfall cardies. Hate them with a passion. Long cardies make me look frumpy and dumpy anyway as I'm 5ft 3 and not built like a china doll. They do look good on tall slim women though. but so do bin liners

Muckogy · 02/10/2015 10:51

i seem to have 4 of the buggers. i'm not buying any more. i don't think they flatter me. i suspect they make me look big. they'll do for work, mind.

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 02/10/2015 10:52

Waterfall cardis are incredibly frumpy

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 02/10/2015 10:52

I only realised when someone took a pic of me wearing one.
It went straight into the charity bag I can tell you.

IlonaRN · 02/10/2015 10:59

I don't like them.
Having said that, I have one (quite thin), which has been very good while pregnant! I suspect it will find use while breastfeeding too.

Kewcumber · 02/10/2015 11:08

I like my waterfall cardigan. I'm happy to be frumpy if thats how it looks, it looks OK to me!

LisbethSalandersLaptop · 02/10/2015 11:13

trust me Kewcumber, it doesn't look good.
Get someone to take a pic of you and you will see what I mean.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 02/10/2015 11:21

Heavens above, if you something just wear it! Don't go throwing things out then buying new ones just because they are 'in' and 'out' like the tide.

I don't care for the waterfalls (too fat) but I love long cardis and ponchos, though some of mine I've had for years and wear regardless of what's in.

Guess I'm old and ugly enough not to care though.

elementofsurprise · 02/10/2015 11:26

Dowager I don't think the voluminous top half look that many shops are full of looks good on anyone, bar stick thin 6-footers

Exactly!

It seems to have gone on forever too. I'm small of nork, defined waist, but chunky of thighs and arse. I liked the late 90's baggy combat trousers and tight top look! (although maybe a flowing skirt instead of combats)

I have just bought 4 of these Zara Cardigans in the past couple of weeks in Navy, burnt orange, the beige in the link and black. The are so comfy and I've had loads of compliments. I wear them with skinny jeans, ankle boots and different coloured vest tops. Jazz them up with necklaces.

Would these be classed as a waterfall cardi? They don't have any ruffles or frills? Blush Blush

bialystockandbloom · 02/10/2015 12:05

I just always picture Eastenders' Carol Jackson when I think of waterfall cardigans. Shudder.

Why are waterfall cardigans back in?
Kewcumber · 02/10/2015 12:06

lisbeth fair point - I'll rephrase.

I don't much care then... it's a cardigan!

Kewcumber · 02/10/2015 12:08

Mind you, my cardigan doesn't have any ruffles or frills and I don't drape it a'la Carol so it is held together by my nipples.

CocktailQueen · 02/10/2015 12:15

I have large norks and I like waterfall cardigans! not all - you have to be careful they're not too voluminous at the front - but some do work.

Anyway, wear what you like and what suits you and what you feel comfortable in - don't be dictated to by fashion!!

Kewcumber · 02/10/2015 12:20

My waterfall is straight over the chest area (huge norks here too) only voluminous around bottom (which is also voluminous)

Am slightly taken by the idea of a fashionable cardigan though

BagelwithButter · 02/10/2015 14:26

What is the pojnt of waterfall cardis?

  • They don't do up and actually keep you warm
  • They expose the one part I would like to hide (stomach area)

It's really hard to find a decent, long cardigan. Most shops seem to think that if they're long, they must have a hoodie, why?

I had a lovely one but it's old now and looking very bobbly so the search will on again this winter. Ugggh!

Sleepybeanbump · 02/10/2015 14:29

Because this always happens. The fashion industry waits until it has sufficiently demonised x thing to the point that virtually no one will still have any stashed at the back of their wardrobe and then reintroduces them so everyone has to go out and buy new ones.

BoskyCat · 02/10/2015 14:44

I am cardigan queen but cardies must be able to be buttoned or zipped up IMO, so I've never bought a waterfall one.

I think of them as frumpy but I think that may be too much MNing. It is one of the core rules isn't it. Parent & child parking spaces are sacred. Waterfall cardigans are frumpy. Etc.

Kewcumber · 02/10/2015 16:19

I don;t get very cold Bagel so am not bothered about them buttoning up - and if I am cold you can pull them around you. I don't need to cover up my stomach - I generally have a top on which does that!

Having said all that I don't much notice whats "in fashion". I used to but there really isn't much that hasn't been trotted out before so I agree with Bosky that "fashion" (rather than "style") is just a way of getting people to buy new stuff each season.

Namechangenell · 02/10/2015 17:27

Thanks for the Zara link SummerStars - just checked the US site (I live Stateside) and they don't do navy or light grey here. Weird! Still gonna order the other colours though ??
