Has anyone ordered prescription glasses online?

Just that really. I need new glasses but don't want to spend £££ at boots/ where ever.

Where have you ordered from?
Were they any good?
How did you choose frames without trying them out?

Thanks! Grin Flowers

Glasses Direct many times. You can upload a pic of you and virtually "try on" styles

You will likely need a measurement from your opticians (I had to pay £10 at specsavers)called Pupillary Distance so ask for that when you get eye test. I understand some opticians don't charge to measure your PD.

ICanSeeForMiles · 25/09/2015 14:01

I've had glasses from Glasses Direct, and they were okay, but didn't last very long. If you don't want to spend a lot, I would recommend going in to Specsavers and buying a £25 pair.
I've done that this morning, after I lost my glasses moving house last week, and to be honest they're on a par with the £90 ones I got from GD.
Plus they make sure they measure and fit your face properly, and have the correct leg length for your ears.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 25/09/2015 14:01

I have. But it was for a back-up pair as I wear contacts most days. I ordered from Direct Sight. Picked a cheap wayfarer style frame and they were with me in about 10 days.

Dirt cheap and just as good quality as my pair from boots that was 4 times the price.

I think I could get away with this as I've had similar styles before and the opticians never seem to need to do much tweaking wit the fit of my glasses.

Suddengeekgirl · 25/09/2015 14:09

I am slightly short sighted, so I don't think my prescription is very complicated. And the frames I've ha in the past are all plastic ones so haven't been adjusted much I think.

Boots will be £50 minimum , and ideally I want prescription sunglasses for driving too.

I've got my prescription from them so will look at glasses direct. :)

Zenni Optical are incredibly cheap and pretty good.

Greenrabbit · 25/09/2015 21:49

I've used Glasses direct too. You can try the frames on before you buy them.

Personally I think they are better quality than the cheap frames from Specsavers.
Plus they always have some sort of offer on. I had an email for 50% off and 2 for 1 a few days ago. I've had sunglasses from them too and that was included in the offer.

BlueBlueBelles · 25/09/2015 21:50

I've got three or four pairs from select specs, and some prescription sunglasses. Highly recommend them

LBOCS2 · 25/09/2015 21:52

Glasses direct. You can try on frames before you choose them, they send them to you.

They really come into their own when you have an expensive prescription - I'm very short sighted so I end up spending a fortune having my lenses thinned. The cost of having it done through GD was about a third of that of Specsavers, and I ended up with two pairs for that price...

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 25/09/2015 21:52

I use Glasses Direct too, got a pair of glasses and a pair of sunglasses for £55 I would recommend them.

DifferentCats · 25/09/2015 21:54

I have used Glasses Direct too. I got a pair for £20 that have lasted years.

NameChange30 · 25/09/2015 22:03

I ordered prescription glasses from smartbuyglasses.co.uk. I actually found the frames in an opticians but both the frames and lenses would have been expensive. So I ordered them online for about half the price Wink I was happy with the service, the glasses arrived quickly and came with a free mini cleaning kit.

I would be reluctant to order frames I hadn't actually tried on, although smartbuyglasses offer free returns even on prescription glasses, so that reduces the risk.

MarvinKMooney · 25/09/2015 22:11

I've ordered online two or three times now. I try on loads on the high street, note down the style number and then Google them.

My current specs are Ralph Lauren: vision express wanted £260 and I got them for £80 from eye wear.com Fashion Eyewear.

oh, and I snuck back to vision express to get them properly fitted. Naughty.

MarvinKMooney · 25/09/2015 22:13

Sorry - link fail. www.fashioneyewear.com

customercare · 25/09/2015 22:13

I've often wondered about this but Zi have complex prescription, short sighted. astigmatism and needing varifocals for reading and distance. Does anyone know if its possible to order these online?

Andcake · 25/09/2015 22:16

Yes cubbitts - v cool frames and a bit niche and funky - live mine

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 25/09/2015 22:18

Check the numbers on the arms. Biggest is the arm length, shortest is the nose, middle is the lens

DriverSurpriseMe · 25/09/2015 22:21

I haven't. I wish I could risk it, but I have a narrow face and I really need to try frames on before I can tell whether they suit me or look ridiculous.

Hero1callylost · 25/09/2015 22:26

I've used Glasses Direct too, you can try online if you upload a picture/video of yourself (the instructions are really easy to follow, you just need a webcam and a credit card sized card so they can scale it correctly).

You can also get 4 frames at a time posted to you for free so you can try on at home.

They're great for saving a fortune on rimless glasses.

Wait for an offer as they're always doing the 2 for £55 or something like that. Follow them on Facebook or sign up to their email newsletter.

"I've often wondered about this but I have complex prescription, short sighted. astigmatism and needing varifocals for reading and distance. Does anyone know if its possible to order these online?"

I really wouldn't as the fit is critical. You need someone who knows what they are doing and get the measurements correct. With varifocals if the fit is slightly out you can feel really dizzy in your glasses.

customercare · 28/09/2015 11:39

thanks Bunbaker, that's what I thought

noisytoys · 28/09/2015 20:42

I have a strong astigmatism but pretty much no prescription for distance close or far. I ordered some from Glasses Direct but they made me feel ill within minutes of wearing them. I stick to high street opticians now I'd rather pay a premium to get fitted properly.

jackandjill123 · 03/04/2018 08:55

Anyone know which high st opticians will adjust glasses bought online (even for a fee). I have tried both specsavers and boots who both refused!

Tantpoke · 03/04/2018 11:58

I have wonky ears so have to get them adjusted hence I buy from Specsavers although I did have frames sent from glasses direct once till I realised they wouldnt of course be able to adjust them for me so would be useless really.

CMOTDibbler · 03/04/2018 15:45

I have a complex prescription, and when I looked at glasses direct it ended up more than Asda who did my current glasses and who I am going back to - one pair varifocal, thinned, astigmatism, prisms and one pair sunglasses similarly for £120 all in. Two pairs for a third of what one pair without varifocal cost before

Daisy143 · 25/02/2020 10:22

Just few days back, I purchased prescription glasses from Framesbuy. Initially, I was hesitant to buy online from them as they offered glasses at a very reasonable price. I was worried about the quality, however thought of giving it a try as the site offered return option.

The glasses arrived quite sooner than expected and had to say it was definitely more worthy than the price. I was happy with the quality and more happy to get that at a pocket-friendly price. There are really a good number of options and the shopping process is also easy.
