Wearing a Trend You Wore The First Time Around.

Today I'm dressed like my 17 year old self. I feel like me, I feel comfortable & this is MY style.

Except it's 2015 & I'm nearly 40. Can we do this? If we're older can we do 80s or 90s fashion again? Or do we look like fools?

I'm already doing it so perhaps I'm a bit late in asking but I just wondered...

Yes of course you can. I find it's usually a bit different anyway though - someone "doing" a 70s look this year, for example, won't look exactly like someone in the 70s. Different fabrics and subtle differences in cut and so on, that are recognisably modern. (Though something from the actual 70s like a vintage dress might fit in, it also might not)

I want to know what your 17yo look is though!

I have just ordered some DMs and am looking forward to reworking a look I did at 17 too.

Floisme · 14/09/2015 13:40

There is nothing in the shops I haven't worn before. Nothing, rien, nada.
If I followed this line of thinking, I'd have to take to my bed for the rest of my life.

Blame designers for not having the wit to do anyting more than recycle old trends.

TheSpottedZebra · 14/09/2015 13:42

Is it a checked shirt? 'Cos they're always fine. Well, I hope so anyway.

YesAnastasia · 14/09/2015 13:50

It's a kilt. A short red one with converse. And leggings.

I have to admit, it was opaque tights with holes in the 90s but that's only because I didn't have time to dig them out.

My top is grungy too. I hope I'm not embarrassing.

Hey, I love my checked shirt but I don't know if you should be listening to me, I think I'm young.

Sgtmajormummy · 14/09/2015 13:58

I bought a pair of bright pink Converse shoes in the spring. Last time I did that was 1988 and they were the black high top "baseball boots" style with the rubber circle on the ankle.
Nothing new under the sun...

BoskyCat · 14/09/2015 13:59

I think the rise of Jeremy Corbyn is partly responsible for making me want to revisit my 80s radical lefty DMs + leggings look.

YesAnastasia · 14/09/2015 14:04

This is encouraging! I loved my DMs. And I don't think chunky knee high boots ever went away... did they?

Floisme · 14/09/2015 14:04

The queen wears kilts - admittedly not with converse. Don't think she's ever been accused of dressing like a 17 year-old.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 14/09/2015 14:19

Well, it's a fine line. It's more about the way you wear it rather than the items. Do you look like you are trying to look like a teenager? Are you dressing like your children? If not, don't worry about it.

YesAnastasia · 14/09/2015 14:29

My children are 4 & 6 year old boys so no. But I am dressing like teenagers are doing now because 90s is 'in'.

Someone told me I had my 'own style' this morning.

This '70s fashion (flared jeans, off-shoulder boho tops) reminds me of me 13 years ago! Can't wait to buy some tops!

YesAnastasia · 14/09/2015 14:54

I like the pussy bow & the boho dresses. And the denim.

Yes, I see what you mean. When Joss Stone wore those amazing skirts & I wanted to be a hippy.

My life expectancy is 84 years. If fashions return every twenty years, I expect to hang on for a few more rounds. Grin

Floisme · 14/09/2015 16:07

Nooo to pussy bows. I cannot look at them without thinking of Margaret Thatcher

50ShadesOfSummer · 14/09/2015 16:14

Of course you can do this. Sounds like a good look. I'd probably go for tights as I have gone off leggings. The difference would be that years ago I would also have had ripped tights. This was less a fashion statement than the fact I was clumsy, always tearing them, and skint. Now I'm less prone to clumsiness and Primark will sell you 3 pairs of opaques for £3.

The good thing about the current weather is my DMs were on again at the weekend.

(I am way over 40, by the way.)

amarmai · 14/09/2015 17:20

have you got the front panel of the kilt hanging down on a slant? And you could wear jeans under it . Go for it!

mewkins · 14/09/2015 19:56

Are youbalso wearing a Guns n Roses tshirt? I think you can wear anything again. I dyed my hair like Angela from My So Called Life the other day. Her outfits were ace.

YesAnastasia · 14/09/2015 21:47

Her outfits were cool but I girl-crushed on Rayanne (sp?) big time.

No it wasn't Guns & Roses but yes, it was that style, see - such a 90s cliche.

Tomorrow I'm wearing my DMs with a satin nightie, a choker & a dark red lippy.

OP posts:
Basketofchocolate · 14/09/2015 21:57

I saw two women about my age in their DMs today and thought 'could I? could I?' especially since I'd had to change shoes and socks due to the rain. They looked comfy, waterproof and I liked being able to wear interesting colours.

YesAnastasia · 14/09/2015 21:58

Well you can. With a kilt. Or an overly pretty dress. Let's do it.

OP posts:
christinarossetti · 14/09/2015 22:03

I've been thinking about this with all the baggy, patterned trousers that are in at the moment.

For me, they're just a bit too much 1987 (although I do like how they look on others).

Have still got my DMs, but don't know if I've got a floaty dress to wear them with any more. Could do a mini though.

YesAnastasia · 14/09/2015 22:23

So what you're all saying is that you'd like to dress this way but don't.

I like that I'm not alone in this thinking and will start re-living my youth immediately. Which means tomorrow (or even next week) now I'm a lot less wild.

OP posts:
burnishedsilver · 14/09/2015 22:34

The problem with doing this is that, when you catch a glance of yourself in the mirror, the 17 year old face and physique that you're used to seeing in the outfit is replaced by what appears to be your mother wearing your clothes. It's disturbing and not a feel good moment.

burnishedsilver · 14/09/2015 22:44

I should add the reply - that's been my experience. You might have aged better.

shouldIapply · 14/09/2015 22:45

Oh, are DMs in again. I may have to buy a pair. I went to a Cambridge Ball in my green DMs but never got a pair of oxblood red although I often lusted after them. And I do wish I had worn a pair when DH and I got married. Sigh.

I thankfully look nothing like my mother did at my age so don't need to worry about that.
