tights can feck off!

I thought of the fashionistas when I chose my outfit yesterday so I selected a pair of black tights - Leggings! No! - with my slightly above the knee dress and I went off to the shops.

I spent the trip extremely uncomfortable as the tights slid down and hung precariously low the crotch nearing my knees with each step... The tights were the right size and good armpit hugging M&S style. that did not stop the rapid descent.

A big contrast to a trip to london the day before when I wore a shortish dress and a pair of sensible black M&S leggings with a nice wide waist band that stayed in place. The leggings were comfortable and fairly cropped which suited the weather I was comfortable and properly covered. no droop. Walked around and travelled on trains and sat down on benchs and chased children - all securely clad throughout, no tripping over a hanging crotch.

So tights I don't think you're ready, for my jelly. I shall remain preferring leggings.

I fucking hate tights. I hate the way they feel on my feet :S Only wear them when I really, really have no other option.

MadHattersWineParty · 07/09/2015 10:06

I was going to post about rights just yesterday. I bought some Pretty Polly ones. I could feel them going but I was on the high street with bags of shopping so I had to do a funny little walk to keep them up until I could give them a good old yank, I looked ridiculous. The crotch was practically at the hemline of my dress! Bloody things.

VioletBumble · 07/09/2015 10:11

Completely agree, they are HORRIBLE garments. Snaggy, sweaty, nylony, never fit properly... I hate the way the feel on my feet too.

How can leggings get it so right and tights get it so wrong? Confused

WoodleyPixie · 07/09/2015 10:28

I don't get how opaque tights are like this. I have tried buying bigger/smaller/right size and all kinds of deniers/cotton/knitted etc. I assumed I was my rounded tummy that meant that they didn't stay up and wore leggings as often as possible instead of tights. But there are many dresses and situations that leggings just aren't the right thing to wear.

Best ones so far have been asda for curves. no good if you are slim though as start at a 14 I think.

stripytees · 07/09/2015 10:37

I mostly wear those "secret slimming" ones and this never happens with them.

slug · 07/09/2015 12:31

Knickers over the top.

Works for small girls and the grown up ones as well. Some slide down, some stay up. I'm buggered if I can work out why this is.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 07/09/2015 14:30

Yes slug cheers - i have done that in the past and it is a solution but an unsatisfactory one! I don't want to wear knickers on the top - if an item of clothing doesn't 'work' then it is not something I want to wear as a 41 year old grown up person. But on occasions when tights are necessary i do it under protest.

DD has given up on tights for the same reasons as you OP, she's only 5!

latebreakfast · 07/09/2015 21:26

Why would anybody want to cover their lower body in nylon?

patsyintheworld · 07/09/2015 21:37

Black opaque 40 d tights from M&S are a perfect fit - if you get them a size up. What some of you describe never happens.

patsyintheworld · 07/09/2015 21:38

I could not survive without black opaque tights. They are one of my things - whether fashion dictates it or not.

SwedishEdith · 07/09/2015 21:48

"Why would anybody want to cover their lower body in nylon?" - what's the alternative if you don't want to wear trousers all winter?

Boots tights aren't bad at staying up.

QueenPigSmoothCheeks · 07/09/2015 22:20

I tend to wear M&S 60 denier 'extra size' ones, but hey, I'm sick of them too. For the last few years I have been wearing leggings as they allow me to wear socks with my Doc Marten wedge boots.

VioletBumble · 07/09/2015 22:21

Leggings! They are the only and lovely alternative.

AsTimeGoesBy · 07/09/2015 22:25

Yep, I hate all tights. Trousers or leggings all the way once it's too cold for bare legs. I will wear a dress to the work Christmas party but probably not again (or a skirt) until about April now.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 07/09/2015 23:19

Why would anybody want to cover their lower body in nylon?

I have just read this out to dh. He's gone all wistful.

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 07/09/2015 23:23

The best I've found are the M&S 60 denier opaques that suck your tummy in which after 3 dc is welcome they might be called control tights, or bodycon. I had a woollen pair on the other day, and walking the dog, I just wanted to hitch them up every 5 steps.

VioletBumble · 08/09/2015 19:52

See hitching your tights up every 5 steps is no way to live your life. We should form a tights resistance movement.

SwedishEdith · 08/09/2015 19:59

Oh, no, leggings are not a tights equivalent at all. Totally the wrong texture to wear with a tweed/wool skirt. But, I love tights season and get anxious when it gets too warm for them.

ShebaQueen · 08/09/2015 20:18

I agree with patsy, love my opaques and am so happy to be back in tights for autumn.

I see we are definitely in the minority though, I'll get my coat Wink

Googlers123 · 08/09/2015 20:20

I also love tights, have no problems with them slipping down and agree that leggings are no alternative. Leggings don't go with a smart dress or skirt, or anything other than very casual dresses and skirts IMO

Northernlurker · 08/09/2015 20:21

I think tights work for a specific body shape and I don't have that shape ( being short and fat Grin) On the occasions where leggings won't do I find M&S velvet touch to be the least bad option but not a patch on leggings. Leggings are ACE. Tights are not.

Orangeanddemons · 08/09/2015 20:25

I loathe tights in all shape and forms and never ever wear them. In fact I can't remember when I last did so. I only wear trousers or dresses with no tights in summer. The feeling of tights rubbing together makes me shudder.

I also dislike leggings, but for different reasons. I never wear them either

Taranta · 08/09/2015 20:28

M&S Magicwear tights are brilliant though you do have to do a bit of a dance and wriggle to get them on, at least I do...
Am currently 8 months pregnant however and despair of finding ANY tights that don't roll down over my bump with crotch heading towards my knees. If I wanted harem pants i would have bought them! Angry

PrincessHairyMclary · 08/09/2015 20:32

I was comaining about how my pretty Polly tights always get holey and was recommended that Primark (a shop I avoid at all costs) did brilliant ones and really thick 200 dernier ones for winter.

So off I popped to stock up and brought loads to see me through this term. Regardless of the fact I'm in the middle of the height/weight range they have a tiny crotch/body area and just sit at my knicker line (opposed the higher waist of the pretty Polly ones). As soon as you take 2 steps in them the sodding things start rolling down and I've got tonnes of the buggers!
