Eyebrows always need to be done, I have them done professionally once a month and tidy with tweezers in between. Basic makeup - mascara, powder foundation and blush at all times. Nails done - shellac or paint in a neutral shade. Clean ironed outfit, good shoes and nice bag. Hair done. I've recently mastered a blow dry. I feel much more groomed than my previous beach wave style. Could you learn to do that? Otherwise some simple updos. Gibson tucks look nice.

Itsalldramarama · 22/08/2015 16:59

Yes eyebrows are my main thing ! Then mascara and lipgloss , nails always painted and a spritz of perfume ! Even in my scruffier jeans with the above I feel good to go :)

iwantgin · 22/08/2015 17:02

A showery and hair wash sets me up for the day.Grin

If am going somewhere special I might use some make up. But not for work.

A haircut every few weeks helps (short pixie)

StitchandBitch · 22/08/2015 17:19

Eyebrows done (I have mine threaded and coloured every 4 weeks) perfume, a bit of foundation and earrings and watch. Then I'm ready for everything Smile
Wish I could help you re hair. Mine's usually tied back in a messy bun as I'm useless with updos...

DurhamDurham · 22/08/2015 17:22

BB cream on is a must, I never wear foundation but feel much better wearing BB cream.

RavioliOnToast · 22/08/2015 17:22

I think I Wang a few layers in to soften it a bit, it's very heavy atm.

good advice re eyebrows too. I've bought a nice bag and boots too. I fancy a new perfume, any cheapish recommendations? one with decent longevity?

I like M&S and Body Shop for good value daily scents. I get a lot of small sized bottles for variety, as get easily bored wearing the same one every day. Even better when they run their respective discount events with 20% off etc.
HTH [ smile]

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 22/08/2015 21:47

For me.
Make up. Consisting of BB cream. Eye shadow. Eye liner. Lip gloss.mascara.
Hair accessories. Costume jewellery.
Nails painted
I only wear dresses.
I'm one of those people who will not walk out the door ,r unless. I feel a million dollars

Pigeonpost · 22/08/2015 21:51

On the eyebrow point does anyone have any advice/recommendations? I have recently abandoned my fringe so my eyebrows are on show again and they aren't pretty...

Pigeonpost · 22/08/2015 21:53

But to answer the question: gel nails (although they don't take 5-10 mins, more like an hour a fortnight) and a nice necklace to 'finish' each outfit if I could just work out where the dog has hidden my favourite one

Baconyum · 22/08/2015 22:11

I'm not one for always wearing makeup to go out but there are certain things I always do.

1 Hair always needs to look tidy

dry shampoo can be a lifesaver if hair needs a wee boost as mines quite fine. My hairs quite long. I just did my first mumsnet haircut and I love it! Normally it's up in a twist secured with a clamp clip. But its getting too long for that so that sometimes gives me a headache.
Was looking for a new style and LOVE the look of the Gibson tuck so will try that tomorrow.

2 eyebrows tidied weekly and nails filed. Generally don't wear false nails but will paint a neutral or clear varnish on.

3 if I wear make up I use a cream to powder base, bronze eye-shadow, mascara and a rose/peachy lip colour.

4 I'm not a big fashion person but wear what suits me. I find it saves a lot of hassle if you buy in colours that all work together. But I have 2 colour 'palette's' I use. Black white and red for more formal wear, earth colours (brown, green, rust, burgundy etc) for casual. So shoe wise I do black or brown/cream. Then everything tones.

RavioliOnToast · 23/08/2015 09:58

I quite like the body shops stuff. I have O2 priority which nearly always have £10 off a £20 spend. or 40% off one transaction which I will use for perfume for myself Grin has anyone tried the lidl perfumes? one apparently smells like chanel mademoiselle?

I have short bitten nails which I want to sort out aswell, have any of you used opi nail envy? is it the best or is there another?

I think I'm repeating a lot of what everyone else has said, but for what it's worth, mine are:

  1. eyebrows threaded and tinted

  2. natural(!!) fake tan - a gradual moisturiser one to stop me looking blue rather than a full on mahogany look.

  3. nails painted. I'm lazy so I get them shellac-ed every 3 weeks ish.

  4. perfume, doesn't matter which one, just a scent. Second the m&s small bottles recommendations. I love them!

  5. make up - I always wear foundation, blush, mascara and gloss (Vaseline actually Grin)

  6. nice shoes and bag. I look a mess generally (need to work on this!) but I always have nice shoes and bag!

SuperFlyHigh · 23/08/2015 10:16

This reminds me… need to pluck or get eyebrows redone.

if it's warmer then legs shaved/underarms shaved.

it warmer and sandals then pedicure done.

makeup helps too - mascara, foundation, blusher, lipstick.

also a check to ensure that what I want to wear is ironed, no stains, no missing buttons etc.

i also find that if I make an effort with jewellery - e.g. match a nice necklace and earrings then that helps.

for work I tend to wear skirts/dresses with tights (apart from when super hot) and this helps me to plan what to wear, how to look more professional. I recently bought a new work dress and work/casual skirt and it does help knowing I can put these on and they look nice.

something2say · 23/08/2015 10:29

Do you have curly hair? Will it curl if there are layers in it?

I have hair like that. It's a blessing but needs work. I find that curl creams and serums are my best friends. My hair is mid back length now, layers up the back and this allows it to go into ringlets. But it can look dry and frizzy, hence the serums and products. But thick hair looks great when it's well cut and the ends are looked after...

As for what makes me feel polished, I guess having had a lovely leg shave, and then using moisturiser.

RavioliOnToast · 23/08/2015 10:58

It goes wavy if I let it dry naturally. I'll invest in some curl stuff. do you recommend any? Grin

Eyebrows pencilled and combed. Or just combed.

Something done to the front of my boring ponytail or bun, eg. A little pomp/quiff, side parting pinned neatly or even a wide "turban twist" hipster hairband as a cheat.
In fact a hat or wide hairband gives a wonderful illusion of effort.

bigcomfyduvet · 23/08/2015 12:15

Shamelessly subbing to find in future.

I agree re eyebrows. Mine need doing.

squizita · 23/08/2015 12:17

Oh also lip liner and matte lips as opposed to a slick of gloss. Back when I had a social life switching from L'Oréal nude gloss to MAC liner and Chanel in a dark tone was my work-to-bar ritual (no need to do eye make up if lips are bright, and classic red works with neat/boring hair).

SuperFlyHigh · 23/08/2015 13:19

bigcomfy - I think i can maybe tweeze my threaded ones (done a month ago) but thank god it's not only me who's thinking about if they need doing too!

Fireandicicles · 23/08/2015 15:40

Plucked Eyebrows, mascara and lipstick always.

I have simple dresses to throw on when I need to feel groomed to leave the house, indoors I wear my lounging about clothes that I wouldn't be seen dead in outside my front door.

LockedOutOfMN · 23/08/2015 15:45

Eyebrows plucked.

Teeth just cleaned.

Clean hair.

Legs shaved.

WashPosh · 23/08/2015 18:30

I recently discovered what a difference eyebrow pencil made.

And earrings. Instantly smarter - and well kept shoes.

Buttercup27 · 23/08/2015 18:40

I had long hair that was always in a pony tail as I didn't know what to do with it. I then had it all chopped off in a spikey pixie cut. I now rub in a a bit of putty and it's done, but always looks styled and we'll groomed.
I have also just been introduced to a new simple make up routine which I love and it's so simple, bb cream, light eye shadow, clear mascara and pink vasiline.
I second getting your eyebrows shaped regularly.

WishICouldThinkOfACoolUsername · 23/08/2015 18:58

Can someone educate me please? What's a Gibson tuck? And how do I fo about this?
