MN jury: Should I keep it?

I have hankered after this dress for ages but it was a bit pricey, I wasn't sure I would have many occasions to wear it and there was a niggling doubt that it would fit me as I'm not a stick insect.

Anyway. It appeared in the sales, I have an event in November for which it would be perfect and I gave in and ordered the largest size.

Needless to say, it doesn't fit. I'd estimate I'd need to lose about 1.5 stones for it to fit me. Normally, I would never ever keep clothes that don't fit as that way self-hatred, madness and an overdraft lie, but:

a) the dress is really really beautiful, unusual, and I doubt I'd find one like it again.

b) I have been losing weight, though have stalled in the last four months for reasons.

c) If I can't lose enough weight by the event time, I will need to buy another dress anyway which is not a huge issue but irksome nonetheless.

So, should I keep the dress and use it as an incentive or send it back?

Tricky one. I often buy things with the intention of slimming into it, those clothes are still piled up unworn over a year later!

However, as you are already losing it's perfectly reasonable to think you could shift 1.5 stone by November. Easy.

Could you have it let out if not?

It's a lovely dress and I'd be tempted to keep it

I would send it back.

It's enough weight to lose that it may not happen and tbh the dress doesn't look that different or unusual to be motivating to me. Will you really not change your mind about it before November?

Send it back, it's the kind of dress that could look like a sack of potatoes! Might not flatter even if you lose weight.

Send it back. Buy something that celebrates the size / shape you are around the time of the event. (Super dress though! Maybe you can get something similar made by a dressmaker.)

That picture doesn't really do it justice. It's a heavy matte satin, lined, and the back is beaded.

I would normally send back without hesitation but I'm wavering.

Doesn't matter how beautiful it is if it's not a certainty that it'll suit and flatter YOU.

This is the back.

FWIW, it's a style and shape that would suit and flatter if I was thinner - I've worn similar dresses in the past. I could get it on but not do it up (even breathing in really hard). It came from Plumo who do some lovely stuff even if their sizing is fucked up.

After seeing it on site I would send it back. It's not cheap (no idea how much you paid for it though) and I think with the back like it is and the sleeves (which I really dislike) it isn't going to be the easiest dress to carry off. It could look rather frumpy, in my mind

No- keep it if you love it! Or you will lose weight and be gutted you sent it back!(and if you don't lose weight, or it doesn't flatter, eBay it)

If you can afford to 'lose' the money then keep it. If you haven't lost the weight by then you can always put it on eBay.

Its beautiful and very unusual. If you are sure you will lose the weight and you can afford it, keep it. I think you could regret it otherwise. Its stunning!

I've done the same - bought items in the hopes of losing weight. Some I fit into, some not. I know my answer's not helpful. :D

But you seem to really like it. I agree, if you can afford to have the money just lying there (I personally think it's too expensive a risk, but expensive is relative), keep it and let it motivate you.

I would send it back. There'll be hundreds of dresses around in November for the Xmas season.

It's too much money to lose if it doesnt fit. It's only saving grace is that it's long and you could shorten it and get someone to remove the zip, put in two back panels , replace sip and make it bigger if you don't lose the weight but it's a lot of work.

I wouldn't. If it was £25 I would!
