MN jury: Should I keep it?

I have hankered after this dress for ages but it was a bit pricey, I wasn't sure I would have many occasions to wear it and there was a niggling doubt that it would fit me as I'm not a stick insect.

Anyway. It appeared in the sales, I have an event in November for which it would be perfect and I gave in and ordered the largest size.

Needless to say, it doesn't fit. I'd estimate I'd need to lose about 1.5 stones for it to fit me. Normally, I would never ever keep clothes that don't fit as that way self-hatred, madness and an overdraft lie, but:

a) the dress is really really beautiful, unusual, and I doubt I'd find one like it again.

b) I have been losing weight, though have stalled in the last four months for reasons.

c) If I can't lose enough weight by the event time, I will need to buy another dress anyway which is not a huge issue but irksome nonetheless.

So, should I keep the dress and use it as an incentive or send it back?

Send it back. It's got no character. It's awful.

Flaperon · 11/08/2015 20:56

lego Thank you! I lost more than 2st in the last year and was still on track till a few months ago when illness, work and life got in the way, but I have been starting with diet and exercise again in the last couple of weeks. I haven't put weight on over those months but I also haven't lost any.

It was kind of a big thing for me - I was always about a size 12 and pretty fit but then I was ill, had to stop exercise and take some medication which made me gain weight. Shallow as it sounds, I was devastated when I realised I'd got to a size 18 and felt awful about myself.

I'm now down to a 14/16 but obviously some retailers have skimpier sizes than others and unfortunately this is one of those occasions. I buy about 99.9% of my clothes online and I'm always ruthless about sending them back if they don't fit or don't suit. This is literally the first item I've seriously considered keeping. It's mainly because I love clothes which are a bit interesting and vaguely dramatic, and I have whole vacuum bags of silky velvety lovely stuff which I can't wear at the moment.

I hear all of you who are saying send it back and I think I'll sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

Send it back.

Nonnainglese · 11/08/2015 20:58

Assuming the model is a stick insect, I'm pretty certain that unless you're the smallest size the dress comes in, then disappointment is likely, sorry op.

Judydreamsofhorses · 11/08/2015 21:45

Send it back. My motto is that if you need to ask anyone else's opinion, it's a no.

Oly4 · 11/08/2015 21:50

I would keep it and use it as my weight loss goal! It will motivate you

iamanintrovert · 12/08/2015 11:02

Send it back. You must shop for your CURRENT shape and size. Only way to do it :)

Bluecheese22 · 14/08/2015 10:21

I think it's absolutely beautiful and if you love it as much as you seem to then use as it inspiration to slim down into it! I vote keep it!

Dowser · 14/08/2015 10:30

I wish I had a penny for all the dresses I bought that were a bit tight and would look better if I lost 4-7 lbs.

It never happened.

It's too expensive to take that chance. You are better buying a bigger one and taking it in to make it fit.

burnishedsilver · 14/08/2015 11:15

Send it back.
Spend the money on something that makes you feel good. This will sit in your wardrobe and taunt you.

PacificDogwood · 14/08/2015 11:19

Send it back.

Looks like it would crease really easily.

And does it require dry-cleaning, what with all the beads? Screw that, then Grin

senua · 14/08/2015 11:52

The dress that the model is wearing has creased horribly.

senua · 14/08/2015 11:53

x-post!

lurkingaround · 14/08/2015 14:38

I agree with PacificD, it looks like it would crease really easily.

Send it back. If the money is not an issue you could keep it. Even then, I'd send it back.

cece · 14/08/2015 14:56

Send it back. I always work on the principle of if you aren't sure then don't buy it.

SouthWestmom · 14/08/2015 15:03

What size are you? Any bigger than a twelve and it will look awful.
Love the back but you'd need to be toned and slimmish.
Send it back, it'll be a depressing waste of money otherwise

SuperFlyHigh · 14/08/2015 15:05
