I'm off on a boating holiday with just hand luggage so I need a pair of shoes that will do for travelling/going for walks/wearing when weather not good enough for flip flops (only other shoes I'm taking). Are trainers the only answer? (I don't wear them now - I'm 54 - used to when I was fit!) If so which are most comfy?

What sort of boating holiday, UK or elsewhere? If it's something like canal or the Broads in the UK then you probably want something a bit sturdier and more waterproof than a trainer eg this sort of thing - or even walking boots. Towpaths can be very muddy!

If something more like a yacht in the med then I would guess deck shoes or a canvas lowtop.

Greek Islands - but I know there'll be serious walks so I don't thinks canvas will hack it

I have something similar to these which are serving me well this summer. Worn them with trousers, leggings-and-tunics and long and knee length dresses.

Those walking shoes are very reasonably priced and sturdy but (shallow me) a bit ugly :(

Hmmm thanks so much both - so karrimor could be the way to go? Do they need 'breaking in'?

And do you order shoe size or a bit bigger?

No, they don't need 'breaking in'. I got mine a size bigger but that was to allow for thickish socks.

For Greek islands I think I'd go with those sports sandals or similar.

If you are looking for something comfortable to wear but not walking shoes the sketchers go wall come with the highest possible recommendation from me. I have never found shoes so comfortable. I love mine.

These are the ones I have, they are bliss!

Thanks for all the recommendations - I'm liking the skechers - would they be suitable/sturdy enough for rambling type walks? Will go and see if I can see any of these in shoe shops so I can try on/touch and feel :)
