Does a list like this exist anywhere? if not, shall we create one?

I can think of the following:

Laura Ashley - 'Romantic'

All Saints - 'Alternative'
Karen Millen - 'dramatic'
Michael Kors - 'Glamorous'
La Redout - 'Classic'
Monsoon - 'Ethnic'
Ralph Lauren - 'Preppy'
Boden - Classic with a touch of bonkers Grin

You get my drift.

I suppose I'm wondering if there are any shops I've overlooked which may be my kind of style (classic/dramatic).

Cos believe it or not, is H&M's "older sister"

It is really popular to wear in the fashion industry (buyers, merchandisers etc love COS)

The clothes look a lot better on than the hanger appeal. Especially for Apple and strawberry body shapes.

Sansarya · 13/08/2015 10:48

Morgan de Toi - I couldn't be more obvious if I tried

What was that brand Jane Something? That definitely fell into the same category as everything was either skintight, sheer or both!

polyhymnia · 13/08/2015 10:50

Jane Morgan? I've never heard of the Morgan one.

Sansarya · 13/08/2015 10:54

That's right - Jane Morgan! But it was a different company to Morgan de Toi IIRC.

M&S's Limited Collection range used to be really good. I have a couple of pairs of leggings from there that I've had about 8 years and are only just starting to go at the knees. But from what I've seen in there lately they've gone a bit Cos.

Anerak · 13/08/2015 11:00

No it was Jane Norman and it's extremely popular in the netherlands, they just Love it!

WallyBantersJunkBox · 13/08/2015 11:34

La Senza - thrush inducing

BugEyedBeans · 13/08/2015 12:23

I get most all of my clothes from charity shops or my daughter's cast-offs. Had some good things from charity shops, like whistles tops and MaxMara dress as we are in a posh area.

Jigsaw - weirdly unpleasant colours
White Stuff - aspirational school playground mum
New Look - what are they for?
Urban Outfitters - cool image, appalling quality, look like they have been run up at home (badly)
H&M - teen hell

afink · 13/08/2015 13:17

Jane Norman was the worst. So tacky, style free and slutty looking. Basically, everything they sold was this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jane-Norman-Pink-Black-Fitted-Floral-Top-size-12-/161783219360?hash=item25ab0804a0

WallyBantersJunkBox · 13/08/2015 13:19

afink it's probably worn like that. As a dress. Grin

Sansarya · 13/08/2015 13:26

Hasn't Jane Norman closed all its UK stores now?

Sansarya · 13/08/2015 13:26

Mind you, I did have one friend who only shopped at Jane Norman but she was the type who would try something on to check if it fitted and if it did she'd go a size down!

SuperFlyHigh · 13/08/2015 13:29

Sansarya - yes they went bankrupt last year or year before. I think I only ever bought 1 or 2 items from there but I had friends like you say bought things there.

back in the olden days my shops were:-

Warehouse, Oasis, Karen Millen, Morgan de Toi. Pied a Terre and Hobbs for shoes mostly.

this is when those shops were 'better' not as they are now.

SuperFlyHigh · 13/08/2015 13:30

does anyone remember Ton Sur Ton? 80s/90s brand. just found them online. had a jacket and swimsuit from there

ExConstance · 13/08/2015 13:31

Laura Ashley - too dull to be even frumpy
Monsoon - droopy
Coast - occasion wear
Next - synthetic floppy stuff
Dorothy Perkins - huge and dull
Bon Marche - you need to be 0 to go in
Tesco - Are you 13 stone and want to wear size 12?
M&co - provincial
La Redoute - looks cheap

New look - hidden treasures
Karen Millen - are you 8 stone and want to wear size 16?
Boden - middle class mum with too much cash
M&S - neo polyester.
White Stuff - Are you a social worker?
Top Shop - innovative
River island - Are you a downmarket teenager?
Mint Velvet - classy
Whistles- cool and pricey.

BoskyCat · 13/08/2015 13:32

Jigsaw –English lecturer with spare cash

White Stuff – just accept you have a post-baby tum and wear this tum-friendly saggy smock in the hope that the hideous print will distract from it

Boden – channel your inner 6yo at great expense

Next – downtrodden, repressed and too scared to shop anywhere with a personality? In you come!

Cos - educated out of the reproductive instinct (love it though)

Joules – NO REALLY! I'M FINE! SEE MY BRIGHT BIRD-BEDECKED FROCK!

All Saints – In your fantasies, you're Chrissie Hynde (not that that's a bad thing)

East - 60-something retired social worker on holiday

Toast - middle-aged would-be poet

Hobbs – stylish but proper headteacher

WallyBantersJunkBox · 13/08/2015 13:34

Bosky do you work in the marketing dept at Next???

GrinGrinGrin

Sansarya · 13/08/2015 13:58

East - you are Dame Judi Dench.

queensansastark · 13/08/2015 14:08

Ok...someone do

Massimo Dutti
Phase Eight and
Marella

Please?!

Sansarya · 13/08/2015 14:17

Massimo Dutti seems to be for those who want preppy yet European style at Zara prices. It isn't as good quality as it likes to think it is. Which reminds me that Mango is awful and I've never bought anything from there which hasn't ended up with holes in it after a few months!

BoskyCat · 13/08/2015 16:58

Phase Eight - Mother of the Bride who doesn't realise that Phase Eight is a chain but thinks it's a lovely wee boutique only she knows about.

Have never been in the others!

TeaAddict235 · 17/08/2015 22:13

Vero moda - anything you want, but in leather
M&S- our main focus is food

PennyPants · 17/08/2015 23:09

Boden- Notting Hill wannabes
Joules (especially wellies)- pony club mummy- Super!
M&S- Frumpsville.
Next- lost the plot.
H&M- Still cool
Topshop- Flashbacks

TheDarrellRivers · 05/01/2023 03:02

Shamelessly resurrecting this very old thread- dry humour and interesting.

SockGoddess · 05/01/2023 07:34

Thanks Darrell - just had a good laugh (including at my own old posts!
