Following on from earlier thread, I was in Slingsby Place today.

Duo boots..now Ted and Muffy
OP posts:
LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 21/08/2015 23:54

I won't be buying again. I replaced some old faithfuls last year and the zip snapped mid winter.

Definitely gone downhill even before the price hike.

DeathByChocolate1714 · 22/08/2015 00:04

The new name is, apparently, the names of the two people who founded the company, Ted and his wife, Muffy!

WoodleyPixie · 22/08/2015 17:46

The prices are ridiculous now. Won't even look at them again and have unsubscribed from the mail list.

I loved my duo boots and despite a weight loss due to running my calves are still bigger than average so still used duo at least 1 new pair a year.

I wish next would list the calf sizes in their boots. Save me ordering and sending back.

hiccupgirl · 22/08/2015 18:53

Wow to those prices! Makes me think I can convince myself and DH that I need to keep both the pairs I've just ordered from Next that still come in £100 under their prices Grin

pinkfrocks · 22/08/2015 20:26

I've just ordered a pair. I am a VIP person and got 15% off.
I have no choice as I have 33-34 cm calf.
Other boots look like wellies on me.
I have 3 pairs from a few years back- all wearing well though don't walk miles- car to office, odd shopping trip- not walking miles every week. Unfortunately one pair I love is a tiny bit too tight. I had to size down or up with the calf and went down- can't wear thick tights with them.

mewkins · 22/08/2015 20:58

I only once ordered duo boots anout 8 years ago. I have skinny legs and couldn't find any to fit. They were awful and old fashioned when they arrived and I had to pay a fortune to return them. Other companies do good slim options now. Jones and Gabor are both brilliant..

pinkfrocks · 22/08/2015 21:26

I'd be happy to try Jones but I don't think they are narrow enough; what calf size are you?

mewkins · 22/08/2015 23:22

Not sure of actual size but I have very skinny legs indeed! My gabor ones are perfect.

pinkfrocks · 23/08/2015 09:03

are the gabor ones leather or are they the stretchy fabric type? I've never seen gabor boots - knee length.

mewkins · 23/08/2015 12:51

A really nice thick leather but with a thin elastic panel which starts about halfway up the boot to the top. I bought mine in Shoon.

pinkfrocks · 23/08/2015 12:58

interesting, thanks.

mewkins · 23/08/2015 14:43

Sorry meant to say the elastic panel is only about an inch wide rather than being the whole top half of the boot which I made it sound like!

Brighteyes27 · 13/09/2015 09:26

I am very annoyed at this dodgy rebrand (hate the name choice), price hikes (whereby at least £100 has been added to the cost of even the most basic boots). As a loyal DUO customer who visited the Edinburgh shop every autumn since discovering the brand about 4 years ago). I was really looking forward to a trip up to choose my winter boots (as my old ones need replaced) but I can't find anything at all that I like online. So I probably won't bother. I am very tall 6ft with wide calves due to doing a lot of sports when younger and love a pair of comfy, practical, slightly stylish tan brown everyday boots that aren't 3/4 length that I can feel good in and wear to death. I don't know what I am going to do now. Although I did feel the quality of Duo had slipped last year but as a tall lady with big calves I don't know any other suppliers?

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 13/09/2015 10:15

I wanted to buy a pair of duo boots for my very skinny calves but I had put it off.

Although now that I've read the ankles are still baggy, I guess I dodged a bullet.

I get by with leg warmers to fill in the gaps.

Roseformeplease · 13/09/2015 11:14

And, in my mid 40s, I don't want a fairytale fit. I want good quality boots that fit, and last.

piechuck · 30/09/2015 10:27

Hrrmph, had promised myself a new pair of Duo boots this year but can't afford them now - they have boots on there for £400!!!

Had to google 3 times, as thought my search had been hijacked by Ted and Muffy.

The sale better be good, even at 50% off those prices are ridiculous!

AMonsterInParis · 30/09/2015 12:00

For any of you with slimmer legs I can highly recommended the slim.fit boot from Jone Bootmakers. I have a 33 cm calf and they fit well. I usually buy them in January though as they go down to around £80 a pair. I used to buy from Duo, but the prices became ridiculous and the quality and fit got worse and worse IMO.

ExConstance · 30/09/2015 13:16

I contacted them to complain about their silly ne name and sky high prices. I have never bought a pair of their boots but have several pairs of very comfy Duo shoes, including some sky high heels that are like slippers to wear. They replied telling me about it being the owners' names and how they had improved the shops and introduced nicer packaging - I'd rather have reasonable prices! I've now had a letter giving me 15% off through to the end of 2016, so presumably people are not happy with the prices. I'm not happy as there are very few shoes in their catalogue, but lots of very silly (over knee lace up etc boots.) my legs are so short those boots would cause me gynaecological problems.

LexLoofah · 30/09/2015 14:24

I went in the Ted & Muffys in Bath last week and made a quick exit didn't know it used to be Duo, nothing in there that I remotely fancied wearing even if I could afford them. Am prepared to be laughed off MN for this but ended up in Hotter and love the boots I got there, they do wide calf ones and they are comfy.

ExConstance · 30/09/2015 14:33

I will go and look at the Bath shop out of curiosity but doubt I'll be purchasing. ECCO have improved a lot recently, and they have a shop in Bath too. I have to confess I do have one pair of Hotter shoes, but I'm struggling to come to terms with it.

ExConstance · 03/10/2015 21:33

I went to the shop in Bath yesterday. I was quite surprised, the layout was unchanged but they have ripped some of the plaster off the walls to expose the brick/stonework and distressed the floorboards. The window was very stark with mostly boots and no prices shown. Inside they had loads of those very long above knee length boots that are all between £300 and £400 - I really can't see that most people could wear them at all. The knee length boots and the few shoes on display were not top top quality, Russell and Bromley were about the same price and much nicer. The shop assistants were hanging round looking bored. I was expecting a sumptous re-fit, and a few stuffed wolves!

LexLoofah · 03/10/2015 21:50

ex I thought the same about those extra long boots, they must be expecting lots of wealthy giraffes to come in, still they could have at least acknowledged my presence, Ah well plenty more shoe shops around, will given them 6 months at the most

Rosa · 03/10/2015 21:52

Last winter when in London Covent Garden went to get measured to think about replacing knee high boots .Whilst there some ankle boots took my fancy and I asked to try them on. Length wise it seemed I was a half size . I asked if they did half sizes or if I could try a similar model - they had 3 or 4 . The enthusiasm of the staff and the sheer willingness to help a customer was zero ...the shop wasn't busy . So I left and decided to order on line ...they fitted ok but the sole fell off within 10 days so got my money back. Looking this year agree re the prices massive hike and a much smaller range... Hotter you say ..well off to have a look!

Twinklestein · 04/10/2015 10:01

Ted and Muffy is the most dreadful name.

I've never been madly keen on their boots, but boots made to measure is a good idea in principle. However, for a company that's supposed to cater for slim legs their smallest calf size is 30cm and mine are 28cm.

If they wanted to rebrand themselves and go upmarket, why not design some more stylish boots? They're all a bit conservative.

It feels like they've got a good idea and no idea what to do with it.

Zinnia · 16/10/2015 12:16

Belatedly cottonned on to this fiasco.
Grrr.
Called to ask WTAF was going on with their sizing, advised to order by UK size (9, in my case), though the girl I spoke to was fairly new and didn't sound at all sure about it - she had to put me on hold and ask someone else (confidence, much?). Apparently they changed the sizing because "customers had been complaining about inconsistency".

Also asked why the rebrand, and WHY the hike in prices? she trotted out the founders' names line and said they were focussing on improving quality and paying suppliers more.

Anyhow, they are splashing 25% off today which takes the boots back to roughly the prices they were pre-rebrand. Code is WEL25 for anyone who can get over their irritation with the whole thing.
