Mary - I know you will hiss at this, but the J Crew No 2 pencil skirt is a good fit. I need size 0 and I am a small size 10 (often size 8, in bottoms). It comes to the bottom of my knees. Look on eBay...

PrimeraVez · 09/08/2015 10:33

I would agree with the poster who said H&M... I had an amazing charcoal grey one from there about 5 years ago that was something stupid like 12.99

I loved it so much that a few years later, I paid a tailor about 80 quid to replicate it in a heavy wool. Which about a fortnight later I put on a hot wash by mistake so that it shrunk and the lining was left about 4 inches longer. Sad

The J Crew No 2 pencil skirt

I love a pencil skirt, I really do. But I find that when I get one that fits in the waist it's a bit tight on my big bum, then when I go out for a brisk walk at lunch it manages to spin around so the slit is at the front. What am I doing wrong?!

maybemyrtle · 09/08/2015 11:10

What Belinda said about the No2 pencil from J Crew. I have this version and it is just perfect. The fabric is great, nice and substantial without being too heavy/rigid. I would ordinarily balk at that price (I think I paid around £80 with a code) but a) it's further reduced now and b) I got so much wear out of it last year I'm considering buying a second. Totally agree on sizing down too, I'm a 10-12 pear and have a size 2. Gulp.

leccybill · 09/08/2015 11:13

I bought the perfect black one in all natural fibres from Etam in 1996. Still wear it for work at least once a week. The best thing I ever bought.

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 09/08/2015 11:29

But I have slim legs. Many of them look straight blinners but gape at knees

OP posts:
MaryBerrysEyelashes · 09/08/2015 11:31

You see in the site that looks baggy

OP posts:
maybemyrtle · 09/08/2015 11:48

Mary, just size down. I'd be wearing a 4 for it to look like that on me, I wear a 2 for a neater fit. Def no gaping at the knees (or anywhere else).

squizita · 09/08/2015 19:02

I live in them for work. I swear by H&M and ... Primark and "Everything Five Pounds". Good stretch and wash well. No one guesses to the extent it can be awkward when someone admires my £5 skirt and I have to just say I ordered it online! Shock

I'm management in a public sector job, not Uber smart but I think the cheapness of the skirts (which work well with decent vintage, tweed, cord, moleskin etc waistcoats and jackets) would be unexpected.

What like a saucy one?
The opaques reassured me. Grin Never seen Dita down M&S bulk buying on 10% off weekend. Grin

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 10/08/2015 09:20

Oh I can't bear a cheap one. Not cos it's cheap. I just want a great durable one

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 10/08/2015 09:20

Like the baukjen one. But gasp high waisted. It would do up under my bust

OP posts:
carrie74 · 10/08/2015 10:45

I've got a black ruched one from Baukjen, which rides up and the label drives me insane on my leg (both left alone and then cut out). I don't wear it.

I've got a charcoal grey ruched one from Me&Em (can't see them at the moment, but they may bring them in for winter), which is fantastic, always looks great, double thickness so no chance of VPL, and I can wear it below knee or as a mini skirt depending on my mood that day (and whether wearing it for work/at the weekend).

Not that one, but I have no doubt that that one is excellent quality. Love their clothes and have rarely been disappointed. Regularly wear all their items I have at home.

mewkins · 11/08/2015 07:39

Mine is about 12 years old from Zara. Still going strong. I also bought the box pleat stretchy one from me and em for about 20 in the sale and it's lovely. I wear it a lot.

sassytheFIRST · 11/08/2015 08:19

I had a PERFECT one once. It was wool blend, lined, little bit of stretch but not much so arse looked fab. Ended just on the bottom of me knee, split the right length to allow walking but keep the shape. I miss it.

It was from Next if you can believe it.

NarrativeArc · 11/08/2015 08:21

I have a stone coloured one from Autograph which has washed and worn well since Easter.

I've worn it with platform snake skin sandals, high wedge t bar espadrilles which work well on the endless cobbles and old stairs.

southeastastra · 11/08/2015 08:24

i just got \link{http://www.zara.com/uk/en/trf/skirts/jacquard-skirt-c269213p2890622.html\this from Zara} cheap but looks niec.

avocadotoast · 11/08/2015 08:28

Does anyone else get that weird flick-out-at-the-knee thing with pencil skirts? Like when you stand side on it fits at waist, down hips, and then when it gets to thighs it flicks back out rather than staying snug?

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but they all bloody do it. Maybe because I'm only 5'1?

Someone suggest one that may actually fit me please Grin (Size 10-12, sort of half-hourglass half-pear shaped!)
