Hi, I'm going to a verrrrrry fancy wedding next month. I've only been to 2 weddings that were far more casual than this one so don't have a lot of wedding experience.

I've seen this dress and all my friends (who are going) have said its lovely etc.

Then I showed my sister who said she'd kick me out if I turned up to her wedding in it ShockGrin

So..... I'd like some impartial views please, incase me friends are setting me up for a roasting!

Is this dress too bridal for a wedding guest??

I think she said it's an Asos dress but sold out.

Bluecheese22 · 31/07/2015 13:02

Either of the latter 2 will look beautiful. First is stunning but definitely too bridal.

polyhymnia · 31/07/2015 13:03

Gosh no. Way too bridal. Don't understand your friends' thinking on this.

The first one is sold out but there is a size 10 on eBay.

The brand is Needle & Thread, they do beautiful dresses.

I think your last is lovely for a wedding.

Just a thought I had because of your 'moth to a lightbulb' comment:
What about getting the first dress and speaking to a seamstress about changes/dyeing options as it really is pretty and if you love it you would probably get usage out of it...?
If the fabric will take a dye uniformly, you could also change the waistband ribbon and possibly the underskirt...

I suppose it depends how much you want that dress and if it was slightly less bridal you might have more occasion to wear it.

CainInThePunting · 31/07/2015 13:31

Sorry, conversation moved on. I meant the floral maxi.

WingsClipped · 31/07/2015 15:16

I LOVE the second option (from Coast)

BackforGood · 31/07/2015 16:09

I'm in the 'avoid maxi' camp too. What I said earlier about "evening dresses" as they don't look right in the afternoon, but if you go too relaxed then it looks 'beach dress' not 'wedding' IMO.
Look for a nice knee / just below the knee length dress. They are currently very fashionable so all over the place.

BumWad · 31/07/2015 16:13

The second dress is just stunning!

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 31/07/2015 16:19

Personally I think full length dresses are out for a wedding unless the dress code states so (beach weddings are different, of course - maxi dresses are completely de rigeur then!)

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 31/07/2015 16:19

OP - what is making the wedding you are going to vvv fancy? Eg where is it being held / time of day?

TheHouseOnBellSt · 31/07/2015 16:22

The back up looks too pale as well.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 31/07/2015 16:34

Maybe the OP's friends have been confused by the John Lewis website - when you click on dresses "for wedding guests" it includes lots and lots of bridal gowns and white dresses that could easily be worn by a bride... Smile

It's a church wedding followed at a hotel, I don't want to say too much becuase I don't want to out myself.

The people who are attending won't be particularly posh etc, we're all ruffians really Grin

But I do know they have spent a lot of money, the engagement party was 'glitzy'.

I've ordered the Asos maxi now so will see what it's like in the flesh, I've got a feeling the colours will look a bit brighter.

The majority of my friends won't have even heard of John Lewis Grin (am serious!)

I have just come back from Italy. One Saturday afternoon I was in a beautiful square with a lovely church. There were five weddings being celebrated in that square. They ranged from very smart Italian to less smart English. There was also a French wedding. Anyway, just to say, ALL of the women guests wore maxi dresses with glittery sandals. They all looked fabulous. However, the rich Italian women managed to outshine everyone in the glamour stakes.

Thanks OP I wondered if it was Needle & Thread actually!
