Any recommendations?
Small wrists, not blingy.

I quite like the Longines Dolce Vita range, not sure which one or if metal or leather strap!

Those and the Omega Constellation are probably my favourites so far. The Cartier Tank is lovely but probably out of budget!

Have you thought about a really good used watch? Serviced and polished from somewhere decent?

My favourite watch is a Breitling, I think it is a Colt Lady, but could be wrong. It has a mother of pearl face and is very understated. I bought it 20 years ago with some money my great grandmother gave me and wear it for everything, every day, mucking out my horses, going out in the evening etc., etc..

I have a few nice watches (seemed to be my thing in my 20s - I rarely wear anything but a pair of earrings and a watch).

A dunhill watch is my next favourite - simple round black and white face with a black leather strap.

DH has an Omega watch which is very nice - I don't think it is quite as solid as my Breitling.

Mine are all too old to link to Smile.

lavendersun · 14/07/2015 07:48

I have a Longines too - think it is a Dolce Vita (again 20 years old and I can't remember). All metal - it is much more delicate than something like an Omega.

Twinkie1 · 14/07/2015 07:49

I've got a lovely Cartier that isn't bling you and I have very small wrists too.

It's always mentioned by people as being lovely but it's not something that draws attention to you.

Paddingtonthebear · 14/07/2015 08:22

I don't have a watch currently, or wear any jewellery except a wedding ring (platinum with spaced diamonds). So I think a big chunky watch, as nice as they look on some people, won't look or feel right on me.

I did have a quick look at preowned watches but they seemed to be quite expensive

Husband is suggesting something like a TAG Aquaracer

I love THIS
classic one is nice too
bit more pricey
Bit different
Calvin another one

pinkfrocks · 14/07/2015 10:11

or even a 'Ladies' classic watch'!

I have an Omega mini constellation, without the diamond bling. Love it. Before that I had a Tissot for about 30 years.

lavendersun · 14/07/2015 10:34

I think I have small wrists. Definitely hate bling.

Pre-owned watches can be expensive but that is because they are usually 30-40% more when buying new. Mappin and Webb offered told me that my Breitling was worth more than four times what I paid for it last year when I had it serviced which was shocking tbh.

You need to think about what you want it to do. These are my three favourites and they all have a different purpose - Breitling I wear every day, if I am going out and it is covered in sweat/horse muck I wash it under the tap with washing up liquid Shock. Also the most expensive but it is definitely the most practical watch I own, I have literally worn it every day for 20 years.

Dunhill with the leather strap - I wouldn't wear it every day because I would knacker the strap with my daily life but it is lovely in the evenings.

Longines - rarely wear it now, prefer the Dunhill one.

I think it would be helpful to look at different sorts alongside each other, think about your lifestyle.

I've got small wrists, don't like anything too chunky but not blingy either.
Small wrists mean you need to check the band can be adjusted to fit you properly - solid bracelets may not, or ones with a long clasp. And decent waterproofing is a must IMO.

I like Rotary - they're not wildly expensive but I think the ones I've had look classy and they're quite practical too. I've got one for everyday which is gold with gold/steel band and little diamonds for the hour markers, round ~2.5cm diameter - goes with anything - and then for watersports a plain steel on leather strap (really good value but not what you're after here). The former looks quite like the style of the TAG aquaracer but a bit (not too much) prettier.

I've had an Omega Constellation for over 10 years & I love it - classic & goes with everything. It has a plain face & no diamonds on the it, but I chose to have it in silver with gold bars on the strap & a gold enclosure round the face.

The nearest I can find is the Bi-metal ones. Sorry I can't link as on phone.

I have this Bering one. It cost £149 which is not expensive as watches go, but I liked it more than a lot of the really pricey ones.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 14/07/2015 11:20

Another vote for the two tone Omega Constellation - I've had mine nearly 20 years and it's still going strong & looks great day or night plus two tone means it goes with gold or silver/platinum jewellery.

Paddingtonthebear · 14/07/2015 11:44

I think I need to go and try some on. I am drawn to the Omega Constellation, but also like the Longines, Cartier and Baumes et Mercier tank style. Still open to suggestions. I think I want a "classic" rather than a fashion watch as it's going to be a gift and as a current non-watch wearer, the only watch I will own and wear. And hopefully I can pass on to my daughter!

Anyone know the difference between the Constellation and the mini Constellation? Size? price? There are so many varieties!

I don't have any jewellery except a platinum diamond ring, so I think silver would be the way forward. I do like some of the leather straps but a metal strap is gonna last longer isn't it?

Brand Alley has some lovely one at the moment.

dirtyprettything · 14/07/2015 12:31

I now have a Du Maurice which is beautiful watch, very classy

dirtyprettything · 14/07/2015 12:32

bah! Du Maurier

lavendersun · 14/07/2015 12:46

I only have platinum rings and earrings too - silver metal is the way to go.

I wouldn't go for leather personally as I love the dunhill watch I own but don't wear it much because it is leather.

Dancergirl · 14/07/2015 12:48

I love, love, love my Ebel watch. Dh bought it for me about 5 years ago and I wear it every day. It has a square face with diamonds on the numbers. It also comes without the diamonds or with diamonds on the face too but that was too blingy for me.

It's similar to this (but with diamonds instead of the Roman numerals):

You can get straps replaced and in different colours too so you can get different looks out of the same watch
