For those of us going grey

Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

So can you get your colour stripped out?

Yarp · 14/07/2015 18:16

woodhill

Yes, why can't leg hairs go white?

Pubic hairs do, and eyebrows?

Darn you Mother Nature.

woodhill · 14/07/2015 18:21

yeah mine still seem dark, funny thatHmm

ouryve · 14/07/2015 19:04

I've seen a man with a thick coat of white body hair and I have white hairs on my arms, so I expect our legs might go white at some point, too, just maybe not until we're 100 :o

The plus with them staying dark is that I can zap them with my Lumea.

ThePerfect1IThinkNot · 14/07/2015 19:23

I describe my grey hairs as "hair glitter". At nearly 55 I have just stopped dyeing my hair.

ouryve · 14/07/2015 19:28

Mine are very glittery, Perfect - they sparkle in the sunlight :o

thisismyhair · 14/07/2015 19:47

This is my hair. I am 39.

I sometimes worry it just looks grey and frizzy and then a stranger tells me they love my hair and I am happy again. Strangers never complimented my hair when it was black!

Just go for it - I hope I can especially encourage those of you with curly hair.

I like it!

I have curly hair too. I actually think mine will be like yours when the time comes but mum says hers is grey in patches. I actually think she can't remember because she's been dyeing it too long.

Distinguished looking women is going to be a thing. Now we need to get Diane Lockhart and Alicia Florrick to do it!

AlanPacino · 14/07/2015 20:01

I'm getting more and more grey hairs and I'm just embracing it. Naively I'm hoping my character is my número uno feature. My DH is going the same way and think he would look odd if he turned up sporting a full head of rich brown hair. I reckon my greying hair suits my saggy jowls/hookish eyelids/thinning lips/no nonsense attitude and so on Grin.

SomethingOnce · 14/07/2015 20:04

Wow, it looks fabulous, thisismyhair!

Baddz · 14/07/2015 20:05

I have short hair - short back and sides and longer on top...do I just leave it to grow out and looking hideous or do I try and strip the colour out? Trouble is, I have been colouring it for 25 years!

Yarp · 14/07/2015 20:06

thisismyhair

You have lovely hair.

scarletforya · 14/07/2015 20:11

Thanks for the photos. I'd love to have the guts to do it but I'm not ready. Started going grey at 15 and am 45 now.

Dying is a major pain in the ass, but I like it when it's fine.

scarletforya · 14/07/2015 20:12

I like it when it's *done, not fine!

Baddz · 14/07/2015 20:16

Thing is I really can't justify the expense any more...:(
I had to do a home job this time (had to cancel my appt as Ds was ill) and it's far too dark and I look odd.

Listmaker · 14/07/2015 20:45

My hair is very similar to yours thisismyhair and think the colour at the back well also be similar although am more silver at the front. How do anyway as yours looks great.

Listmaker · 14/07/2015 20:46

That should say hope so...must proof read!

Softcookie · 14/07/2015 21:14

Can I join? Have dark curly/messy hair which is currently about 20 different colours including my base colour (roots), a lighter brown all over which has now gone a nasty copper and some dodgy ashy blond highlights. I have a grey stripe growing out at my hairline, which you can probably see in the pic, and have decided I will just live with it it... 2 main issues:

  1. while all over silver looks amazing, I'm really not sure about a single stripe! And can I keep it long/wavy?

  2. what do I do about evening out the mess I have? I'm thinking of asking the hairdresser to do a rinse all over to even out the different tones but without necessarily covering the gray - if such a thing exists? To further complicate matters I have never found a hairdresser I like after moving here 5 years ago so am scared of going to a new one (the reason why I have so much gray in the first place!)

Can a hairdresser strip out the colour?

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 14/07/2015 21:40

Hallo hallo
We've had a request for a move from this more vegetable/henna wash kind of feel in chat to a more permanent home in S&B? that okay with y'all
#dyingforapun

suzannecanthecan · 14/07/2015 21:45

Can a hairdresser strip out the colour?

Baddz, yes with bleach but it can be complicated to dye the hair back to it's natural colour as dyes will often fade to a brassy/ginger ish shade which contrasts strongly with the re growth

Fishandjam · 14/07/2015 21:47

A move to S&B sounds good! (If it won't cause spontaneous combustion among the fashionistas?)

suzannecanthecan · 14/07/2015 21:47

you might be able to fade the dye Baddz, soak in vegetable oil then wash out with head and shoulders shampoo, can help

butterfly133 · 14/07/2015 21:48

if a thread is moved and you have it on your watch list, does it stay there - so to speak?

JoyceDivision · 14/07/2015 21:51

there is the vitamin c method to strip out dye but apparenty it can be very drying so you would need to uber condition your hair after...
