Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

?
I hadn't even thought about what colours I'll wear, I imagine I'll just wear what looks right on me?
Or maybe I am just deluded about my colour sense? :o

suzannefollowmyvan · 23/08/2015 09:35

I'm certain that I'll have so much more gravitas though :o

lorelei9 · 23/08/2015 12:41

haven't read whole thread

but saw Mary Nightingale on TV the other day - I don't know if that's how her blonde hair has gone grey naturally but it looks superb.

I am dark so I won't have that, but I just loved it.

Tooyoungforanemptynest · 23/08/2015 17:26

Oh I'm so glad I registered on here today. I honestly thought that going grey early was only me. I'm 38 now and was about 24 when i started going grey. I've dyed it ever since. When I watch the TV and look at magazines, no lady has grey hair ( unless it's this fashionable silver all the young girls are going for). Even all the older ladies have full luscious coloured hair, maybe I just don't look hard enough. I feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one struggling at a young age with "the grey". I doubt I'm brave enough to let it grow out though.

ChopOrNot · 23/08/2015 17:50

I have been on here before - but latest update from me. And a huge shout out of encouragement to anyone thinking of ditching the dye. I did so in Feb (couldn't face the badger stripe so had a crop - thread about it here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2316020-To-chop-or-not-Honest-opinions-please ). Have not regretted it for one second. I have had over the last 6 months the odd hair style which I would not have necessarily chosen - especially has have had to keep having the crop/pixie chopped until now - I have finally got rid of all the old blorange dye.

Being dye free is so liberating. No more roots to worry about. No more 2 weeks out of 5 liking my hair colour/lack of roots. Not more fretting about how to fit in a 2 hour colour/root appointment at the salon and never quite being happy with the results.

I am not as dramatically white as I hoped for/expected - the white is in some rather cool streaks at the front and bit of a patch at my crown. However, on 4 or 5 separate occasions strangers in the street/shops have make complimentary comments about my colour - so it cannot look that awful.

So a quick before (Feb). And now. And I am now planning on growing it out to have a messy, curly, grey/white highlighted bob

I like it, Chop!

SewingAndCakes · 24/08/2015 09:00

Chop I read your thread and that's what made me first think of going grey. I'm still dithering but my plan is to go for a crop just before school starts again. I just need to find a hairdresser who will do what I want, not what they think I want!

GammonAndEgg · 25/08/2015 16:14

I'm now very white along my hairline but S&P everywhere else. Can't wait to cut out the blonde. With such short hair it won't take long!

Right now I'm wishing there was a 'like' type button! Loving the pics and positivity.

I wish I could just do a little bit of time travel and see how things have progressed in 6 months time.

DH's side of the family think I'm going through a bit of a 30's Crisis or something: the hair, more piercings and talk of another tattoo.

Itsalldramarama · 26/08/2015 09:19

Oohh did you drama

basildonbond · 26/08/2015 18:24

I can't wait to go properly grey - I've been in limbo for years with bright silver wide streaks at the front and the rest dark blonde. I used to have highlights but hated the straw effect and gradually it got harder and harder to cover the grey so became a fairly pointless exercise. A friend of mine has lovely silver hair and has been completely grey since her early 30s and she looks fabulous

SlipperyJack · 26/08/2015 18:31

I've decided that not only am I not going to cover my greys, I'm going to grow my hair longer. I've had it really short for years so fancy a change. Not looking forward to the in-between stage but I have a great hairdresser who reckons she can help that.

BTW, she thought it was quite punk/subversive to go natural.

Itsalldramarama · 26/08/2015 19:48

Gammon and eggs ... Which ones ? .... Whisper your posting name ..... ;)
Great decision slippery :) I've decided to brazen it out rather than chop too :) easier to manage for me ! Read too lazy to faff and style ! Just a quick twist in a clip ;)

SewingAndCakes · 26/08/2015 21:33

Ooh I'm loving the grey hair on the lady on bbc1 right now Grin

Babelange · 26/08/2015 22:59

My 'platinum' hair - natural - is quite divisive - some think it's fab, others not so - an American ex-friend told me off for letting myself go, hence the ex-friend Grin. At the weekend I was described as an old lady by a group of children but they changed their mind when I got closer (I was swimming in the sea) - despite age I have fairly unlined skin but I was definitely wearing an old fashioned bathing cossie!

I use Touch of Silver shampoo and conditioner which are great. My question is about styling products. Having short hair, I like a wax which seems to have gone out of fashion and also is a little dulling. I don't get on with mousse. Any ideas? T of S doesn't seem to have complimentary styling products (at least in the Boots I go to).

Cocolepew · 27/08/2015 00:40

CainInThePunting · 29/08/2015 22:25

Oh bloody Nora! My hair is a state!

I've been on holiday so the top/front is sun bleached and very blond. Almost white where my natural streak is.
The rest is a nondescript dark brown with a lot of grey but then I have a very obvious re growth of the dark with silver for almost two inches all over.

I'm trying to reduce washing it to once a week also which doesn't help the bag lady look.

Please tell me it's ok and I mustn't dye it??
Give me strength.
