For those of us going grey

Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

I wasn't convinced it would suit me either dramallama but it was either that or cave and get hold of some dye, so I thought fuck it, there's always hats and it will grow if I hate it, but turns out it was totally the right thing to do. I'm not slim and I don't wear make up as a rule so thought it would make me look more frumpy than I did already - very happy to be wrong Grin

The day I had it done I didn't know for sure I could go through with it. I made the decision as I was sitting in the chair waiting for the first snip.

Definite no to a colour stripper - my hair went bright orange and started snapping off - ugghhh.

Post a pic please :)

BestIsWest · 03/08/2015 13:51

Dis anyone see Fake or Fortune last night? There was a woman on who had the most amazing long grey hair. Beautiful.

SandraMelandra · 03/08/2015 14:47

Ooh yes, please post a photo Iknow.

I didn't buy any dye. I just thought I'm going to make a bad situation worse if I carry on!

I am going to book in for a colour consultation at the posh hairdressers near me, I've never been there before.

getdownshep · 03/08/2015 15:59

My dds hairdresser advised me to use a semi permanent ash tone colour to reduce the yellow/orange tones in my hair.
It looks much better now, the grey/white bits have blended in, more silvery all over.
There was a thread on chat recently about barbers that refused to cut women's hair,my dd has an undercut and the barber she went into wouldn't clipper it for her.

suzanneyeswecan · 03/08/2015 16:29

Getdownshep would you mind telling us which semi perm' colour you used?
As far as I can see even the '8 wash' non-permanent dyes have a tint which is mixed with peroxide, presumably it's only a 3% peroxide (?) but even so it would weaken hair which is already damaged from bleaching

IKnowRight · 03/08/2015 16:45

I'm at work atm, will try and upload pics tonight.

I remember the barber thread. Some will, some won't, this one works in a unisex walk in salon but usually cuts men's hair, not many women actually go in, and those that do usually end up waiting for the female hairdresser HmmConfused. He's awesome though, and always looks after us as I tip him pretty well as the haircuts are so cheap. There's no frills, but I'm not bothered about the whole salon experience anyway I'd rather just snip and go.

This is my roots atm, and the side shot is my natural grey. The toner is lasting well so far and loads of people have admired my silver hair Grin

Sorry! Stupid phone.

getdownshep · 03/08/2015 17:20

It was from Superdrug, Creme Sensations Cool blonde, £3.59 or two for a fiver. It's on their website with a good review.
Apparently you have to look at the number on the box, it has to be 10 as this is the ash tone.
This one has no ammonia in it and I just rubbed it on the orange/yellow ends and left the roots alone.
My hair is short so I used half then checked it and then used the rest.
I literally want a short back and sides haircut so might try a barbers!

suzanneyeswecan · 03/08/2015 21:39

Thanks Getdownshep I'm still wary of using anything with a peroxide developed even if the lack of ammonia makes it a bit gentler on your hair.

I think I'll go the purple toner route, or just front it out with the brass :o

Itsalldramarama · 04/08/2015 21:01

I bought a touch of silver shampoo and intensive conditioner in B &M today .... Yes my brassy hAir is slightly better but oh my .. The conditioner is fabulous !! Even after a Deep conditioner and loads of curl creme or serum it's dry and frizzy ! However this conditioner has left it actually feeling like hair and defined my waves / curls :) very impressed for under £2 !

Itsalldramarama · 04/08/2015 21:02

Oh and my grey roots haven't turned purple !

Cocolepew · 05/08/2015 13:48

I agree, Touch of Silver is great Drama
Tried to bleach out the dark dye today, didn't quite work but whacked the toner in anyway Grin

Sorry my phone always does multiple picture posts.

Loveleopardprint · 05/08/2015 13:54

That's a really pretty colour CoCoa.
Good work Wink

Loveleopardprint · 05/08/2015 13:54

Coco!! Stupid phone.

Cocolepew · 05/08/2015 14:09
Grin Thanks, it looks better in rl.
doctorboo · 05/08/2015 14:28

Coco i have hair envy! It might not be what you were aiming for but it looks good. I can't pull off anything lighter than what I've got at the mo.

Cocolepew · 05/08/2015 15:33

Oh thanks doctorSmile
I want my top layers to be longer by october for a wedding , usually Id just shave all my old colour out.
I was a bit worried going lighter because my eyebrows are still black and I didnt want to look like Alistair Darling!
But it looks ok.

CherryBonBon · 05/08/2015 15:48

Can I just ask a question. Are any of you struggling with the condition of your silver?

Despite using intensive conditioners, anti frizz serums and multiple other fecking expensive products my hair is horribly frizzy Sad . I don't want to straighten it as I don't like how straightened hair looks but don't know what else to do.

Any miracle tips?

doctorboo · 05/08/2015 16:33

Cherry I've been shampooing my hair like normal, squeezing the excess water out and then rubbing a small blob of conditioner through my hair, before combing it and letting it air dry - my hair has been amazingly frizz free and my grandad's Nigerian so it's prone to being big and frizzy.

Coco I love that you'd shave it, another thing I'm not brave enough to do! I'm even second guessing the Ginnifer cut I've been in love with for ages.
