For those of us going grey

Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

Sadly I am ungroomed at late 40's with a small child. Not too wrinkly though, and currently hiding the grey beneath purple and green. :)

suzanneyeswecan · 29/07/2015 15:54

so Ouryve you are saying that cutting and styling is more important because un coloured hair is harder to cut?
(due to the change in texture caused by dying)

Or is that just the case with your hair?
I've certainly never heard that from a hairdresser and I'd imagine they get plenty of opportunities to work with uncoloured hairConfused

ouryve · 29/07/2015 16:28

Yes, my white hair is more prone to frizz and I've seen a lot of other women express concern about the different, often wirier texture of their white hairs - it's one of the commonly stated reasons here why women are nervous of going white. Even the white hairs in DH's otherwise poker straight hair behave differently from the rest.

I had thick, wiry hair 25 years ago, but I really can't get away with the variety of styles I could then. It simply does not behave the same in the way that it lies or grows and it's a lot more sensitive to humidity.

The woman I saw had to have been well into her 70s, her face was very lined. But she was slim, had great posture and was dressed really well, she looked great apart from her too dark hair.

CainInThePunting · 31/07/2015 00:11

Right! That's it.
Mr Nicky 'Bouffant' Clarke is dead to me. Dead I tell you.

I'm going to start a boycott of his products! Who is with me?

Honestly though, what an arse. Grin

suzanneyeswecan · 31/07/2015 08:56

I would boycott them, if I used them :o
If it's 'different for men' why has Nicky got such a 'girly'? hair do?
?

Itsalldramarama · 31/07/2015 10:22

Had an awful dream I dyed my hair dark brown and my roots turned orange !!! So relieved to see my grey roots when I woke up ......

Cocolepew · 31/07/2015 14:09

I bought a silver toner today. I'm trying it tomorrow. I'll either be a silver godness or spend the rest of the day trying to wash it out.

SewingAndCakes · 31/07/2015 15:26

Oooh let us know how it goes Coco!

Cocolepew · 31/07/2015 15:39

I'll do a before and after Grin

suzanneyeswecan · 31/07/2015 16:42

I've been using purple shampoo to tone down the brassiness of my dyed hair, definitely helps!

Itsalldramarama · 31/07/2015 16:55

Could do with toning down by brassy colour as its a yucky blorange !! Will the purple shampoo make the grey/silver growth more noticeable though ?

suzanneyeswecan · 31/07/2015 17:09

hmm, I guess it might Itsalldrama?
Maybe worth trying, if you dont like the result it will be gone after a couple of w ashes and it's a pretty subtle effect anyway (IME)

suzanneyeswecan · 31/07/2015 17:11

actually I make my own by adding a dab of manic panic purple dye to conditioner, works out cheaper in the long run Wink

flightywoman · 31/07/2015 17:15

I've been growing mine out for some months. If it was grey I'd think I'd be fine with that, but it's just a dull, not very shiny, light brown/dishwater blonde colour. That's what I hate, not the grey!

So I'm redoing the henna again and to hell with it!!Smile

Cocolepew · 01/08/2015 11:30

I used the toner, but think I left it on too long because I have a purple tinge. It said to leave it fir half an hour or 15 mins if your hair is very porous. I have a lot of bleach so it probably could have done with less
time.

I still have a lot of brown dye on top so I would need to bleach that for the colour to take

MeganChips · 01/08/2015 11:42

That looks really good coco! Smile

Where did you get the silver toner?

doctorboo · 01/08/2015 11:54

Coco I think the 'After' pic looks really good!

I spent a ridiculous amount of time dicking about online last night trying to decide which toner shampoo to get...and still can't decide. I don't want to spend much too tight but I want it to work. I'd have added ToS (had some money off) to my Ocado order, but its OOS for my next delivery and I want quickly.

Cocolepew · 01/08/2015 12:40

Sorry forgot to pute make!
Its Jerome Russell silver toner. I got it in Superdrug for £4.49.
You need either clingfilm or a plastic cap to put over it.

doctorboo · 01/08/2015 14:56

Cheers coco I'll ask my DH to pick some up beginning of next week. I was in Superdrug this morning but had less than a fiver on me so am chancing it with wash in/out cool blonde, its purple, so we'll see what, if anything, happens and I'm using blonde intensive conditioner after and will keep that up weekly until the tube runs out.

The good thing about toners is its all ready mixed so you can use and keep it until next time.
I wash my hair every day so I'll test its staying power Grin

SlipperyJack · 01/08/2015 17:33

Those "after" pics look great coco!

Dowser · 01/08/2015 17:40

I'm not ready to go grey yet. I've got blonde highlights with plenty of brown. Probably ten percent grey at the front and 100per cent brown at the back and underneath.

I keep it fairly long and put it up or in a ponytail . Have it down if not too windy. I just wish there was more of it.

I'm 63. My dad didn't go grey and he was 70 when he died.
