Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

I agree hippospot, my skin looks much better now than it did in juxtaposition to a solid brown dye job which was harsh against my skin. My grey hair makes my skin look younger.

suzannecanthecan · 22/07/2015 22:34

I have only a couple of friends who don't cover their grey

we are the vanguard Hippo another 18 months and silver Rapunzels will be everywhereWink

Evening ladies. Can I join? I have been in many threads encouraging others to stop dyeing.

First grey hair at 13, dyed my hair from 16 - 38 when I had a hideous orange tiger stripe dye job. I decided enough was enough.

I have no been grey for seven years. Sometimes I still get a shock when I look in the mirror but my hair is in much better condition and I spend far less time/money at the hairdressers.

Luckily my DH and DDs like my hair and would not want me to dye it again.

Good luck everyone with the process.

Sorry for typing mistakes. Stupid autocorrect!! Blush

Itsalldramarama · 23/07/2015 09:30

Really suits you lovely leopard :) I'm not brave enough to cut mine short so il have to see how it grows out ! No ones commented on my roots yet but just noticed a colleague looking at me in a strange way !!!! Il slap on some more lippy and brazen it out hopefully ;)

Loveleopardprint · 23/07/2015 09:39

Thanks Dramarama!
I thought my photo had killed the thread! Blush
Bit of loopy always makes me feel better.

Loveleopardprint · 23/07/2015 12:05

Lippy not loopy!!

Itsalldramarama · 23/07/2015 12:10

Though that but a bit of loopy also helps ;)

omnishambles · 23/07/2015 13:56

Right am so in. I have been growing mine out for months but before that have had v expensive half head highlights so now have underneath dark brown, orange halfway and silver badgery bits on top. Frankly it looks like shit.

But, and this is the big but, I have always had long hair - I have a very mannish face and don't think I can face a short cut while it grows out.

What to do arrgh?

Itsalldramarama · 23/07/2015 14:04

I'm the same omni , wouldn't suit short hair as I'd look like a pea head at 5'10 !! I have chopped some of so it's about just shoulder length and I just put it up in a messy up do , all shades from brown to growing out highlights ! We will just have to be brave !!!

omnishambles · 23/07/2015 15:25

oh Ed Balls its going to look rubbish.

I really want touches of Rachel McAdams in True Detective when I get it cut but it will just end up with a long distance Clara type frizzy wedge. With grey bits.

Itsalldramarama · 23/07/2015 15:59

I know how you feel !! Mines curly / wavy and I have visions of lovely grey and white long hair ! God knows what it will look like inbetween !!' But at least we can all look a mess together for now ;) no going back now ....

suzannecanthecan · 23/07/2015 16:11

there must be something that would help the transition, we need a semi permanent grey dye or summat like that Confused

Itsalldramarama · 23/07/2015 16:47

Amazon have them but hair would need severe bleaching to work , mine couldn't take any more bleach it's in bad condition or I might of tried a few highlights to blend in !

SewingAndCakes · 23/07/2015 16:49

That's what I'm planning suzannecanthecan- going silvery grey while I grow out the roots. I'm bleaching, using a white toner, then this silver dye... www.amazon.co.uk/DIRECTIONS-Silver-Semi-Permanent-Hair-Colour/dp/B00155T40Q or www.haircrazy.com/shop/hair-dye/pravana/silver-pravana/

I'll post the results when I've done it.

suzannecanthecan · 23/07/2015 16:59

thats what I tried Sewing manicpanic sliver came out blue, maybe I should have stuck with it but I got side tracked and then decided I'd had enough of the bleaching.
Most realistic grey I got was with ash brown over bleached lengths, in hindsight I should have done more strand tests!

CainInThePunting · 23/07/2015 18:02

I saw a young lady with dyed grey hair the other day, I quite liked it so will be interested to see your results Sewing.
I was also tempted by blue but then I think I'll probably just keep chopping at what I have got until all the dye is out.

goshhhhhh · 23/07/2015 19:30

I went grey with the encouragement of mumsnet. I had grown my hair to a Bob but I found thev dying was effectiving it and I was fed up! I'm 45 and since I have gone to my natural colour people have told me I look younger. I started transitioning whilst still in a Bob but then bit the bullet and cut it short. My hairdresser has been very helpful and we started with blonde highlights ( I was originally dark but had a malen streak from my early 20s ) I still have the odd highlight but really glad I did it.

SlipperyJack · 23/07/2015 19:47

Hmm. I've wondered about getting silver highlights to blend my grey in a bit more! I'm due a haircut soon so will ask my stylist what she reckons.

brusselsproutwarning · 26/07/2015 15:12

That's it you've convinced me! I've told dh and even my DM who's is in her 70s may join us! I'm with you slipperjack, I'm think sliver highlights to blend in the brown and grey roots and bits of blond highlights too. I know it defeats the purpose of giving up the dye but im struggling with the skunk line...

HowlyBabblyBansheeeeeee · 26/07/2015 22:41

I do so want to be free of the bleached blond look. I've been colouring my hair recreationally since my teens but when the greys became really noticeable I was persuaded to go blond. Big mistake! Now, after a couple of years of highlights, it is just a horrid brassy dried out mop.

I've had consultations with a couple of different stylists who tell me I can't have the ashen colour I've requested as it wouldn't work on my hair which apparently is still quite dark at the back.

I hate my hair and it used to be my best feature. :(

howly I swear most hairdressers like you to stick to something high maintenance as it pays their mortgages! You do need to be very careful putting anything ash over blonde as it can go greenish: honestly, I've done it! Though the risk is less if you think it's quite brassy. I'd experiment with some 8 wash colours, nice n easy do them. Once you've got the colour right you can then go for the same shade, or one lighter in a semi (21 wash)

anyone try this ? Wondering would this help to lighten my brown dyed hair to ease the transition?

Itsalldramarama · 27/07/2015 20:55

Are we all stil hanging on to our roots ? I've just joined the silver sisters cafe grey forum :) Pop over .. Lots of fabulous stories , transitions and inspiration :)

SewingAndCakes · 27/07/2015 21:01

Still got my roots, ds3 touched my head and said "is that your lucky hair?" Smile

I'm still undecided whether to go for an all over (apart from my roots) bleach and toner to get rid of the brown dye, or highlights/lowlights, or just to leave as is.
