Forgive the name change, but I reckon this post makes me fairly recognisable.

Anyway, last year I posted my dilemma as to whether to continue dyeing my hair or let nature take over and see what was really lurking under there

I bit the bullet after yet another hair dye ending up brassier than I had hoped and not lasting at all, and decided to grow it out.

Eight months on (I do have short hair) it's all gone, and I am almost completely silver, with a few smattering of darker.

At just 47 I appreciate this is not the societal norm, and in some people's eyes has aged me. One friend pretty much commiserated with me and my hairdresser is horrified.

But in the past month I have been for two job interviews, been offered both jobs, and been invited out in a date (long story, I am happily married and he mistakenly thought I was single).

Several people have told me it looks fab, a neighbour came up to me to say I had inspired her to go for it.

My face still looks fairly youthful, I think, but at first glance people might think I am much older. Yet I still got the job offers and the date! More attention that I have had in years! Grin

So if you are swithering, I would heartily recommend it.

I have had to change my colours/wardrobe choices a bit. But everything seems much easier to get right now my skin tone and hair colour match. I now look brilliant in greys, bight pinks reds and any kind of blues. The corals which used to suit my fake warm brown hair before look wrong. My skin looks/feels happier.

The short hair is not brilliant in someways for me as I have quite broad shoulders so a bit more volume would look better. But saying that having it cut short has made me lose my fear of going shorter if I get bored of long/bobs etc again. It is only hair. It grows.

suzannecanthecan · 17/07/2015 16:48

the white hairs grow more quickly and for longer than pigmented hairs, which is handy if you want to grow it long

CainInThePunting · 17/07/2015 19:18

I'm finding everyone's pictures very inspiring, I'm itching to get to the point where I can chop a load of hair off and see more grey than brown/blonde.
I'm a size 16/18 and bigger up top so cant pull off a crop although I am losing weight so maybe one day...

Thanks for sharing your photos, everyone looks so great, it just shows that we really don't have to keep dyeing our hair.

ChopOrNot · 17/07/2015 19:32

I have seen several other people on the school run (you know the people you know to chat to but know friends as such) appearing to embrace the grey. I like to think I helped inspire some of them (bigheaded emoticon) as a few were people who commented on my chop and I explained why I had the chop - to ditch the dye. The total understanding as we discussed the dye treadmill was strong.

As PP have said - often dyed hair can scream "I am hiding my grey". The funny thing is often the dye looks worse than what people are trying to hide!

Sewing do it. It really is worth it. Whatever method you choose.

suzanne that is interesting to find out. I shall be a silver rupunzal by Christmas Grin

Wow you all look fab !! Not dyed mine for 8 weeks and under pressure from dd to give in !! Naturally dark brown now sort of dark blonde / darker underneath ! Very grey through the centre and a few else where !! So with Id ditched the dye whilst my natural colour !
It's curly and I wear it up which looks ok ish !! Can just see the grey glinting through the front !! Would love to chop it off !! ( not brave enough just yet though!!' Let's keep persuading each other not to give in to the next job !! Here's a really bad photo ..,,

Itsalldramarama · 17/07/2015 20:58

Wish I meant !! Bloody phone ( wine ;) )

WonkyFrontTooth · 17/07/2015 21:01

I'm approaching 47 and have a few grey hairs in dark brown hair.
I'm not happy to go grey, but can't decide on whether to dye or have a few well placed highlights round the front where they are.
Thoughts?

Itsalldramarama · 17/07/2015 21:02

Don't dye ! Wish I hadnt ! Just go with it and see how it grows

ChopOrNot · 17/07/2015 21:30

Don't hide the grey - accentuate it - like Paola Marella - she look stunning.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 17/07/2015 22:21

Hi all, I've been searching for a dye/toner whatever to make my ash blonde properly grey. Been using directions, but doesn't do a lot. I'm getting it chopped next week as it seems to be front and ends that are blondest. Funny isn't it, what I want is proper steel grey hair which being pale ash would take more intervention than dying it blonde!

SewingAndCakes · 18/07/2015 08:47

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis have you seen this one? It's darker when straight out of the tube, and gives a lighter silver when diluted. I've not used it before but I'm planning on getting some.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 18/07/2015 08:55

Oh will try that! Thanks.
Also, what was the fb group called?

SewingAndCakes · 18/07/2015 10:15

Is it Going Gorgeously Grey? I've just joined that one.

doctorboo · 18/07/2015 11:02

I was doing quite well with growing out my hair but my SIL cut my hair (to a style I didn't/don't like; 'mother thread) and convinced me to try a new base colour with highlights.
I immediately regretted it and dislike the colours she chose and am now almost 6 weeks post cut and 5 weeks post colour.
I've told my DH no more colouring for me and I'll be getting a Robin Weight cut before the new school year starts.
I saw a family member very recently who has a V.short crop and has let her grey come through dark hair and her hair sparkles - beautiful.

*another thread. Stupid phone.

MeganChips · 18/07/2015 11:17

There are some really inspiring pictures on this thread. I want to do this so badly, I'm so sick of the tyranny of 4 weekly dye jobs and my hair is in terribile condition because of it. I've posted about it before but I'm so worried about the growing out phase. Plus, it isn't that grey through the back.

If I could have 6 months off work I'd just cut it short and deal with it (I don't suit my hair short, face is too round) so I'll have to deal with the badger stripe. I suppose I could just wear my hair up for the next year.

DH really wants me to do it, I think he likes the idea of a silver fox.

Itsalldramarama · 18/07/2015 11:22

Oo it's so frustrating doctor boo isn't it :( dd has threatened me with hair dye this morning !!!! Just spent ages trying to get it half decent up and this is the result of the grey through the front .... I want to carry on but feeling like rubbish today ...,

bonzo77 · 18/07/2015 11:47

Honestly, those struggling with the transition. It gets better so quickly. Get the re growth to the tops of course ears then have the shortest cut you can bear. The first 3-4 months are the worst. Treat yourself to good cuts and nice make up in the mean time. For me it was worth every moment of frustration and now my hair feels lovely and soft and I get far more compliments now than I did when it was coloured.

Cocolepew · 18/07/2015 12:18

Nan, if my complexion fades any more I'll be see through Shock.
My mums side of tge family al have pure white hair, my gran was completely white by 19.
Ive dyed my hair since I was 14 so have no idea when I started to go grey.
M mum has a very short pixie, and actually looks younger than someone else her age who is dying it too harshly.

Cocolepew · 18/07/2015 12:22

That looks fine Itsalldrama Smile
Im going to let mine come through but maybe streak sone bleach through my darker bits, I have very short hair so it should be easy enough.

GreyGreyGrey · 18/07/2015 13:23

I named changed for this in case I am recognisable. I let mine grow out about an inch or so and then had a big chop. It was such a relief to get all the fried orange-y stuff out. I went to my husband's barber because none of the ladies' hair salons know how to cut natural hair where I live. It's all long and blown straight.

Here is my grey, I am 43.

doctorboo · 18/07/2015 13:33

itsalldrama I think your regrowth's looking good, such a lovely shade/colour coming through. Doooonnnn't dye it!! I'm happy to post weekly hair pics in solidarity if that helps? My SIL...in fact all my DH's family will be anti it and most of mine too, but I'm going to give it a good go Smile

Cocolepew · 18/07/2015 15:23

Oh my, I've just been accepted in the fb group, talk about great looking hair!

Itsalldramarama · 18/07/2015 17:44

Thanks :) was thinking of more bleach but the ends are very dry , might have an inch or 2 chopped off and continue ....
