Which acid toner do you use and would you recommend it?

I've got dry and dehydrated skin but it also seems to be becoming a bit combination as I get older! I get quite shiny on my forehead and have noticed some small red bumps appearing. I am prone to flakiness and scaliness on and around my nose. Pretty much no spots ever so acne is not an issue

I've been using REN Clarifying Toner and I'm pretty impressed with it but its the first acid toner I've ever used and so I have nothing to compare it to. I thought of trying Pixi Glow Tonic but have read very mixed reviews - some people love it, some are very underwhelmed by it. I have also heard good things about Clarins Exfoliating Toner, which is a bit more pricey. My budget is up to ?30. Any recommendations? Thanks

Melon, I agree - you have to exercise caution when reading her blog and following her recommendations or you would have about a million products in your bathroom. She recommends a lot of seriously expensive products too - I just cannot get my head around spending ?50 on a cleanser which spends seconds on your face, however dreamy it smells! She's right though in that if you're prepared to spend ?200-300 on your shoes or handbag, you shouldn't be stingy with what you put on your face

Indeed, re the shoes and handbags - to ensure I was on track with that I bought shoes and a handbag in the same [online] shop!

Dp will wonder what has hit him when it all arrives next week (I also bought four new dresses, some jeans, a couple of tops..... Smile )

But, no, I can't spent hundreds. I am happy to go up to about £50 for a good product I think, though more for a serum or mask, rather than a cleanser. £30 seems enough there. But am happy with the Superdrug stuff too.

Coastingit · 19/06/2015 12:40

Ah ok, lotta, I'll give the Superdrug serum a go then!

Will wait a while I think though - I've only in the last month overhauled my regime so don't want to add too many new things at once in case of any reactions. I have the Biore sunscreen on its way too baa

Coastingit · 19/06/2015 12:41

Ah Germgirl, the old postage trap - you had to spend that much to make it worth paying for postage Grin

Germgirl · 19/06/2015 13:14

Exactly Coasting :)

i use pads from either clearasil or superdrug own brand with salicyclic acid int hem. I find them very good and I haven't had any huge lumps for ages now. They help with my dry flaky patches as well. I double cleanse with superdrug vit e hot cloth cleanser then use the pads then follow with superdrug vit e oil or vit e moisturiser a few times a week I use a loreal serum, i don't use it every day as I find it a bit much for every day. my skins the best it's ever been. My routine is easy and my products are cheap but they work for me.

yazzy85 · 19/06/2015 13:37

I've tried so many of them!!

FAB Pads- the best on my skin when used regularly.

Clearasil Pads - too scratchy and strong for me, made me breakout probably due to high amount of alcohol.

Clinique Mild Toner - nice and gentle, doesn't dry out my skin but not quite strong enough.

Pixi Glow - doesn't dry out my skin, works well just not as good as the FAB pads.

Clarins Exfoliating Toner - don't feel it does anything

Nip Fab Pads - have just these to ordered to try out.

yazzy85 · 19/06/2015 13:39

I also use the Liquid Gold and recently started using the CosRx Bha liquid to help with my congested skin.

Rojak · 19/06/2015 14:12

I didn't get on with the Clarins Exfoliating toner - and I think CH wrote an updated post about frequency of use as lots of users had similar complaints.

Lottapianos · 19/06/2015 14:13

Right, definitely not going with Clarins now. Thanks everyone, that's saved me a few quid. Will be ordering FAB pads this evening Smile

I've had a long [dull] Amazon search and come up empty-handed (well, I found a nice rosewater spray which I have ordered). I know there are other places to shop but I'm just trawling around at the moment and Amazon is convenient for having lots of things in one place.

From reading the blog I want one with salcylic acid (does it matter if I choose a different acid?) and without alcohol. I am also vetoing witch hazel for being too astringent. I have often reacted to cucumber so that is out too. That has left me with nothing. The FAB ones have cucumber. Most have either alcohol or WH.

May have to look into this Liquid Gold. Sounds expensive.

I can live without toner though I think.

mowglik · 19/06/2015 15:54

Melonfool nip+fab dragons blood pads are good, they babe salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid so are moisturising acid toners rather than drying. May be too much if you have very oily skin but I would imagine they would be great for other skin types. I use them and have oily skin

Melonfool · 19/06/2015 16:32

Ta - no, I don't have very oily skin, mainly dry and hormonal. I'll have a look for them.

MamaLazarou · 19/06/2015 16:42

I use Garnier spot purifying toner (3% salicylic) and it's wonderful. Only £4.99. I can't believe all that scrubbing I used to put my skin through before I discovered the joy of acid toners!

Melonfool · 19/06/2015 16:42

Right, ordered those and the body stuff too which may deal with the marks on my shoulders and bum from spots.

I think I'm done for now (except for buying the Superdrug serum).

Melonfool · 19/06/2015 16:44

That Garnier one has alcohol. :(

Melonfool · 19/06/2015 16:46

Oh, and yes, I agree about all the scrubbing in the past. Though many years ago I did use Clinique toner which was described as an 'exfoliator', and I recall people saying at the time to me that a liquid couldn't be an exfoliator.

NomiMalone · 19/06/2015 16:47

Y'see I still use an exfoliating scrub. I can't not. I have fairly robust skin so can handle it.

I use the Alpha H one and only use it a few times a week.

As much as I love my toners they just don't leave my face with that 'freshly scrubbed new layer of skin feeling Grin .

Melonfool · 19/06/2015 17:45

I still have some scrubs though over recent years was already starting to look for more gentle ones. I may use them now and then.

Having ordered a gazillion new products I think I should clear out old ones. Anything nice and also full I can ebay, anything half used or cheaper in the first place I shall donate to the local women's aid shelter (if I can work out how).

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/06/2015 20:53

Fab pads, any grainy scrub breaks me out the next day.

I only use them every other night though, if it used them daily I would break out.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 19/06/2015 21:48

The introduction of an acid toner has made the biggest difference of any product to my skin..and mine is a cheap as chips Olay one. Shock
I don't rate Liquid Gold at all. Did nothing for my skin, but the acid toner does what I wanted the LG to do!
Agree totally on the Superdrug facial oil, horrid stuff, it's just perfumed baby oil from what I can make out. Still have a bottle somewhere. I might give their serum a bash, but I'm saving up for Hylamide.

cerealqueen · 19/06/2015 22:21

DrankSangria what is the Olay one? I used to use one called Clarify and I can't find it anywhere now!

Melonfool · 19/06/2015 22:21

I've ordered the FAB pads, but a bit annoyed with myself for not checking - they have both alcohol and witch hazel. Two things I was trying to avoid. Oh well, we'll see.

I had something before, will try to work out what it was.

Ah, yes, these

Doobigetta · 19/06/2015 22:44

Sali Hughes gave the Aveda exfoliating toner a good review- has anyone tried it? I was thinking of getting it.
