I'm on my continuing perfume quest but am facing one looming obstacle which will trip me up and cause me to fall flat on my face....

How do you say silage? Surely it's not like the stuff you get on a farm, is it?

Blush

For a farm, I'd say sI lidge

Stealthpolarbear · 15/06/2015 19:48

Well what does it mean?
Sigh-lidge

FrugalFashionista · 15/06/2015 19:48

With a thick, fake French accent Wink

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/06/2015 19:49

silage is s-eye-lage. Animal feed Grin

sillage is sill-age. Perfume staying power

FrugalFashionista · 15/06/2015 19:51

Pardon my French

undoubtedly · 15/06/2015 19:52

Oh is it spelled sillage?

Fuck me my eyesight is getting bad.

Yes I meant perfume dry down. Sorry I should have explained that!

undoubtedly · 15/06/2015 19:54

See-yarze?

Oh dear Frugal I'd feel a knob.....

OP posts:
undoubtedly · 15/06/2015 19:55

Thank god I didn't call it s-eye-lidge!

I'd have had to have emigrated.... Hmm

OP posts:
BoreOfWhabylon · 15/06/2015 19:56

Yes, two 'l's - pron. sort of seee-yaahj (just looked it up)

lilacblossomtime · 15/06/2015 20:00

This is so funny, op you have to pronounce it the farm way. Does it smell like fermenting grass?

Laquila · 15/06/2015 20:02

SEE-yarge but I much prefer silage!! Brilliant :)

undoubtedly · 15/06/2015 20:03

I've got about 6 going all up my arms at the moment.

There was one which had a whiff of muck heap about it... hang on....

Katie puckrick on YouTube (love her) pronounced it seeeel aaaaagzhe (seelarge????)

FrugalFashionista · 15/06/2015 20:08

In perfumery, sillage means the cloud of perfume that trails you. Some perfumes are voluminous, they stay in the room after you have left. Some call them sillage-monsters. Try Poison or Portrait of a Lady. WinkIt's opposite is close-to-the-skin scent, I think.

It does not mean the drydown exactly (I get the basenotes at drydown)

No need to fear these terms btw, sniff and explore without fear. Lots of perfumes even don't have the traditional pyramid structure of top notes, middle notes and basenotes (so the beginning and end are pretty much the same, or the perfume is linear). And plenty of perfume salespeople know very little about perfumes - you are far ahead in the game if you know what I just explained. If you get a truly knowledgeful person, just ask a lot of questions, there are no stupid questions...

FrugalFashionista · 15/06/2015 20:08

This reminds me of how Americans pronounce lingerie Wink

undoubtedly · 15/06/2015 20:15

How do the Americans pronounce lingerie??

Sorry Frugal yes I meant its sort of cloudy lingeringness as you explained. I was being lazy and not explaining properly.

I haven't found anything I could call anything more than "moderate" yet, and even that is a stretch for some most of them. I can't find anything green/tea/bergamot/citrus that's really BIG.

OP posts:
gaggiagirl · 15/06/2015 21:03

You could try tommy girl....yes really! Its based on the smell of a Russian tea store apparently. I love it.
There is a roger and gallet citrus scent that is pretty big too.
Elizabeth Arden green tea packs a punch. All of the ones I've mentioned are worth a try as they dont cost much at all, around a tenner.

undoubtedly · 15/06/2015 21:05

I used to wear Tommy Girl at Uni, the smell takes me right back there Smile

I'll try the green tea one out of interest, thanks for the recommendation x

Really? Tommy Girl? God, I loved that perfume but thought I was too old for it now (do they still make it?)

DrankSangriaInThePark · 15/06/2015 22:14

One of my Nose samples did the farmyard thing. Peony something, can't remember now but it was utterly vile, smelled like rotting muckheap but sweet as well. Decomposing melon.

I've really sold it to you all, haven't I? Grin

burnishedsilver · 15/06/2015 22:27

I'm Irish. We pronounce our Rs. When you say See-yarze are you saying C.R.Zee or C. aaaa Zee? Surely neither is right.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 15/06/2015 22:30

The Z like the SI in television.
