Sick of the Breton Top!

Is it just me?

I used to love mine - I've worn them for years, they go with everything, always make me look smart even when I CBA....

But now they're everywhere. I went shopping - to Aldi - this morning and saw another FIVE women in there wearing one. And I know I'm being judgy, but none of them were wearing them in the right way (yes slap me!).

It's putting me right of wearing mine now. Why are they suddenly so 'in'? Confused

I have a genuine bought in Brittany Breton top that is 20 yo this year - I don't plan on stopping wearing it any time soon Smile

It is baggy, BTW - isn't a right version just a stripy t-shirt / top?

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 04/06/2015 17:41

tight not right

TheBeekeepersDaughter · 04/06/2015 17:46

closer I've got one of those! Bought in Honfleur harbour in 1995, so 20 years old. It's had a few extended breaks, but I still wear it lots. Armor-Lux. The man at the market said it would last for 20 years and it has :)

squoosh · 04/06/2015 17:48

Honfleur is so pretty. I bought a lovely watercolour at the harbour.

Actually this thread has inspired me to dig out the Petit Bateau classic Breton top I bought in a children's charity shop last year for DD. It's "16 ans" so I was waiting for to DD to grow into it but on a whim I've just tried it on and it's a perfect (loose) fit (this is not a stealth boast, Petit Bateau's age 16's are apparently an adult size 12, or possibly they wear their Breton's very very very loose). Since I do not live in Wimbledon it's pretty much bleeding edge fashion round my way, and it'll be v. handy with a highwaisted skirt which doesn't work well with my usual T shirts.

ChippyMinton · 04/06/2015 18:27

Lol, I've got an Armor Lux bought in Paimpol about 20 years ago too!

PetiteBateau · 04/06/2015 18:28

I love stripy tee shirts. I like wearing mine tucked into skirts with belts. I like a looser breton with jeans though

noddyholder · 04/06/2015 18:31

I am 50 soon and have been wearing since my teens! I did get rid of loads last year to charity as I got fed up but have bought a couple more since. I hate baggy thick ones though prefer fitted

Everythingsgonegreen · 04/06/2015 20:11

I have been wearing them since copying Patsy Kensit in 1988.

Didn't realise there were rules....

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 04/06/2015 20:44

Mine's a Saint James (though I only know that because I've just checked the label Smile)

Dowser · 04/06/2015 20:58

Oh I want one and I want an armour lux one too!

I don't wear skirts, jeans, legging or trousers.

I only wear dresses....would this be wrong!

ImBrian · 04/06/2015 21:06

I bought a boden one recently but the bloody things practically a crop top! Any idea where you can find them to fit 5"11 with a very long torso.

On another note I see stripy navy and white tops every where especially on the school run. I mostly see them worn with skinnys and the odd pair of leggings.

Melonfool · 04/06/2015 22:52

Boden stuff is always short in the body.

(I have never worn leggings I my life and I've managed to avoid skinny jeans too)

BlueEyedWonder · 05/06/2015 04:00

I've been wearing bretons and stripe tops and ts for years and have no intention of stopping.
I wear my bretons with slim fit jeans generally. I'm thin so the stripes are not askew - phew!!!!!!!
I have slimmer fit tops and ts which I wear with boyfriend jeans or tucked into a skirt.

BikeRunSki · 05/06/2015 04:51

I have been wearing Breton tops sivas about 1985. A proper Breton top is not the same as a stripey "Breton Style" t shirt. A proper Breton top is boxy and a bit loose. Thick ish fabrics, slash neck and never clingy. I suspect that this may be where the term "boat neck" comes from, as they were originally part of the French navy uniform. Each stripe represents one of Napoleon's victories. I used to get mine from a sailing shop.

suddenly become in?! Grin

They are a long sleeved t-shirt - never 'in' not 'out'. A staple. A good one but not 'fashionable'!
