Sick of the Breton Top!

Is it just me?

I used to love mine - I've worn them for years, they go with everything, always make me look smart even when I CBA....

But now they're everywhere. I went shopping - to Aldi - this morning and saw another FIVE women in there wearing one. And I know I'm being judgy, but none of them were wearing them in the right way (yes slap me!).

It's putting me right of wearing mine now. Why are they suddenly so 'in'? Confused

I've got to mark my place to find out the 'right way' to wear a Breton top!

TheDeafeningClatterofDuplo · 04/06/2015 16:03

There is a wrong way to wear these? Intrigued...

Lovewearingjeans · 04/06/2015 16:12

Vertical stripes, instead of horizontal? Marking my place to find out.........

Penguinsaresmall · 04/06/2015 16:15

Ok then I'm back - sorry I've clearly said the wrong thing! Grin

I didn't go into detail at risk of outing myself as a snob - but basically a couple were being worn by very 'large' women, very tightly, so the stripes were all squiffy. IMHO a breton top should be loose and therefore flattering... Someone was also wearing her waist length one with black leggings - with big white knickers underneath.

I suppose I've always seen outfits with Breton tops as something classic and stylish - but now I just keep seeing scary versions.

Oh noes, are my stripes squiffy?

I think it is a look that is going to go the way of ballet flats and colored skinnies... Very few people wear them in a way that is visually interesting, they have become a mum cliche Zero Bretons in my wardrobe.

stumblingalong · 04/06/2015 16:29

Isn't a Breton just a posh name for a stripy tee shirt?
I wear them all the time; jeans, Boden Chelsea chops, shorts (on the beach) and have been doing so for 25 years.

Mine are tightish like this (picture blatantly not me) but that's because with my size 18 bust and my size 12 waist, drapey stuff makes me look like an ice lolly on a stick made of my legs fatter. I've seen a lot of the clingier ones around as a "take" on the Breton - I don't think they're trying to be true Breton tops. Or is this a different thing from a Breton? I just don't know any more

Melonfool · 04/06/2015 16:35

Just a stripey t-shirt with a sort of slash [as opposed to round, scoop, or V] neck, yes.

DosDuchas · 04/06/2015 16:42

its a stipey bloody top

I KNOW the term ' breton' is SO YAH

I am proud that v stylish S1 now is stripeaholic too

MadameJulienBaptiste · 04/06/2015 16:46

Ok I didn't realise that larger ladies weren't allowed to wear them snug fitted.
OP you were in Aldi, I go in lidl and see all kinds of interesting style statements. It's cos they probably bought their stripey t shirts in aldi and clothes in the central aisles of bonkersness aren't vanity sized come up small.

MadameJulienBaptiste · 04/06/2015 16:48

I am a 16 top with wobbly middle and have a sudden urge to wear a tight stripey t shirt next time I go to aldi....

Melonfool · 04/06/2015 16:51

If they're not 'vanity sized' surely they'd come up small?

If I think I am a 12, but am really a 14, then non vanity sized 12 I pick up will be bigger, not smaller?

A vanity-sized 12 is really a 14, so it's the vanity-sized ones that are smaller.

EuphemiaCoxton · 04/06/2015 17:10

Dammit burnished, I've been wearing mine all wrong. No wonder people have been giving me odd looks in waitrose.

Penguinsaresmall · 04/06/2015 17:17

I like the term 'interesting style statements'

Btw I'm not bashing anybody's size - just anybody squeezing themselves into something so tight I can see what they had for breakfast.

OP posts:
DosDuchas · 04/06/2015 17:18

so OP one should wear them tight or loose?

Penguinsaresmall · 04/06/2015 17:20

Loose-ish [confused

As in fairly fitted on the arms and shoulders but looser on the body.

DosDuchas · 04/06/2015 17:20

takes notes Wink

Penguinsaresmall · 04/06/2015 17:22

You're welcome Grin

Where do you shop Duchas?

YesThisIsMe · 04/06/2015 17:23

Yep, Breton shirts should be more or less boxy in shape. Stripy T shirts with other sorts of neckline can be as clingy or draped as you like.

areyoutheregoditsmemargaret · 04/06/2015 17:29

I've been sick of Breton tops since about 2008

polyhymnia · 04/06/2015 17:33

Another who thinks they've been around for ever and are classic, though obviously don't have the excitement of the new. But then I too live close to Wimbledon.

I am large and do dare to wear them - a bit of a ' uniform' in fact - but they are well over my bottom, have sleeves and are not tight, so not too offensive, I hope.

squoosh · 04/06/2015 17:33

Yes I'm sick of Breton tops too and have retired all of mine. I still like the odd stripy t-shirt though, but not in blue and white.
