Is there any point trying to have a fringe when you've got a cow's lick?

Just that, really.

I'm in my mid-50s and fed up of having no fringe. It makes me look like I'm all forehead and no hair. But when I've tried a fringe before, it ends up all over one side because of my cow's lick. I can't be doing with one of those sloping fringes (iykwim) which is constantly over one eye.

Any suggestions?

I have two cow's licks but have a full fringe. It needs to be heavy enough to allow you to blast it down flat with a dryer. I usually go over mine with straighteners too which helps flatten it.

Methe · 20/05/2015 18:21

Not ime. I've tried twice but never managed to make it look ok for longer than 10 minutes and found having to wash blow dry and straighten my hair every day a real pain.

I'm currently growing out an impulse fringe I wore as a fringe once!

SuburbanRhonda · 20/05/2015 18:27

Hmm - you both seem to be saying that daily straightening is the only solution ...

I have a fringe and a horrendous cows lick, the fringe starts the day looking OK , having been tortured into place blown dry.
If I have time , I use the straighteners .

I use conditioner on my fringe , that does help, but it is high maintenance for me and annoying

I came on here to see the future for my 2.5yr old DD! She has a very pronounced cow lick and at the moment I am trying to grow it out for her(luckily she is willing to wear clips to hold it back), it has a mind of it's own!

averythinline · 20/05/2015 18:42

I find a heavy fringe works Bit like Claudia winkleman... blow dry it flat... Then is ok enough for me... Am too lazy for straightners.. Wash hair every couple of days so never too awful .. Unfortunately at mo is mess as decided to get it thinned so now needs work!

DorisLessingsCat · 20/05/2015 18:45

Yes, I have a pronounced one and I got a fringe cut in a few years ago. Mine does a sweeping parted thing. I don't have straighteners, just mousse and one of those big round brushes.

EnidAlexandraRollins · 20/05/2015 18:45

Noooooooooooooooooo.

That is all.

(Having said that, it depends on the degree of the cow lick AND how much work you're willing to put in AND how often you can get it cut. But, in my experience, it's just not worth the hassle.)

RoosterCogburn · 20/05/2015 18:48

Onky do it if you're prepared to style it daily.
I have two very pronounced cow slicks and every ten years or so I get the urge for a fringe, within a few days I'm regretting it and growing it out.

Mintyy · 20/05/2015 18:49

Yes, dd and I both have a very stubborn cows lick but we both have fringes. Just suits our faces better. I have a high forehead and fat face, a fringe is pretty vital for me.

If you look at Salli Hughes taming her fringe on You Tube, that's quite informative.

You do need to be prepared to wash it, or at least wet it, and blow dry it every day.

PannaDoll · 20/05/2015 18:52

I have two cowlicks and persevered with s fringe most of my life. It needs to be heavy and you have to learn to dry it in separate parts, pulling it and pushing it into position. I let it grow out a few years ago. So liberating Grin

Cows lick and fringe wearer

Heavy fringe is the only thing I have found works... Straightening makes mine worse. Blow drying from the roots combed into place works best

CMOTDibbler · 20/05/2015 19:01

I have a cowslick, and have had a number of infuriating straight fringes, but a diagonal fringe works beautifully and is low hassle

SorrelForbes · 20/05/2015 19:03

TBH it doesn't really need the straightener bit. Honestly my cow's licks are very strong and it only takes me about 30 secs to blast my fringe down each morning. I have wavy hair though so have to style the lot anyway each day!

SuburbanRhonda · 20/05/2015 19:08

That's exactly what I've done in the past, rooster. Including the regret Sad.

I'll have a look at the Salli Hughes video, but I'll have to decide whether I can commit to this whole fringe-taming thing Hmm

CMOT how do you stop it going in your eye, though?

OP posts:
CMOTDibbler · 20/05/2015 19:24

Its the way its cut and dried - sort of skims past my eye edge, and then blends into the layers round my face. Am not good at explaining this!

SuburbanRhonda · 20/05/2015 21:20

No, I think you are, CMOT, I can visualise it - just not on me!

I've given up on a fringe due to my annoying cow's lick. I used to spend time hairdrying it flat each morning, and it would look great for all of 10 mins, but the slightest suggestion of humidity and it would ping back Angry

TheGruffal0 · 20/05/2015 21:31

Heavy diagonal fringe, blast dry most mornings, directing air from above while brushing back and forth with a paddle brush, easier than painstakingly curling around a brush in my opinion. But humidity is the enemy of my straight fringe!

Off to look at Sali Hughes youtube.

daimbardiva · 20/05/2015 21:33

I've had a fringe for about 8 years and have a cows lick. It's manageable with blow drying and straightening. My hair's quite thick, that might make a difference.

LogonMounstuart · 20/05/2015 21:35

Depends a bit on hair type too. I think a fringe is more likely to work (with styling) on thicker hair. Just doesn't work on my very fine hair and powerful cows lick, shame as I have a massive forehead!

MillyMollyMandy78 · 20/05/2015 21:47

I have a really pronounce cowlick in the centre of my forehead and I agree with having a heavier fringe. Also the advice given to me (which works perfectly) was to brush the fringe over to one side as you blow dry, then Over to the other side and alternate. Keep doing this and no more cowlick!

SuburbanRhonda · 21/05/2015 12:43

Great suggestions from everyone - I'm going to try them all!

I had heavy one and although it looked great when I left the hairdressers I just couldn't get IT to look like that myself. I loved hiding my lined forehead but ultimately had to grow it out. I would love that thick straight hair people in South asia have.
