Are summer clothes a waste of money unless you go overseas for hols?

I'm beginning to think so.
It's now mid May and people are still in boots and coats.
Even if we were to get 3 months of sizzling sun in June July and August (and maybe 2 weeks Sept) that's only 14 weeks. And we all know June and July are often washouts.

This season I have bought 2 pairs summer trousers and 2 T-shirt type tops and not worn either yet.

I'm currently living in the USA (Chicago area). I soon realized why American houses have such big "closets". In the UK my summer wardrobe consisted of my winter wardrobe less a few layers, and the odd dress/shorts/vests etc for holidays/that one hot day per year! Here I actually wear summer clothes every day for several months. I actually have a winter wardrobe and a summer one, with combination of both for spring and autumn. Some Stuff does get worn all year round of course!

On the kids summer dress comments. What I do is buy DD some cheap cotton summer dresses from H&M. The cost about £3 - £5. She wears them on holiday and the couple of hot weeks we get here. Then once the warm weather goes we use them as nighties. maybe I'm a bit of a cheapskate though

i don't really have summer clothes
i wear the same tops and dresses I wear in the winter, except in winter I stick a vest top underneath and a cardie or jacket on top

i do have summer shoes though - smart flats for when my ankles can be liberated from boots, and a few pairs of sandals
