Suncream recommendations?

Hi everyone, suncream being expensive and a fair few bottles needed for a family of 4 on a 2 week holiday I was wondering which brands you use that come up best for quality and value? I have read an article recently to say that some of the big brands are not giving the protection they are advertising in terms of UVA etc and I'm now thinking is the ALDI suncream just as good as the £10 & £12 bottles in boots?

I rate ultrasun. Its pricey but you only put it on once a day and none if us have ever been burned. You don't really need very high factors as it doesn't give that much extra protection. But rash vest and you have less cream to put on.

reup · 16/05/2015 12:31

I measnt buy a rash vest!

This info about spf is from a cancer charity website.

an SPF15 sunscreen filters out 93% of UVB radiation, while an SPF30 sunscreen filters out 96%. Worryingly, many people burn more frequently when they use higher factors of sunscreen because they stay out in the sun for longer. There is a concern that higher factor sunscreens may lure people into a false sense of security. You should never use sunscreen in order to spend longer in the sun. No sunscreen, no matter how high the factor, can provide 100% protection.

The star rating refers to the UVA protection.

We have used asda, tesco, superdrug, etc own brand stuff and they have all been great. I look for a 5 star uva rating

HelenF350 · 16/05/2015 12:48

I love calypso dry oil spray. It's about £2.99 a bottle in home bargains and it's the only sun protection I don't burn with. It also doesn't make your skin feel greasy. You need quite a lot of it but it's very cheap.

ygritte · 16/05/2015 21:45

Did you read the Which article or an abbreviated version
from a tabloid? I'd subscribe to Which for £1and get the details (then cancel the subscription). I remember Soltan being highly rated one year and converting to it.One of the big bargain brands regularly comes out poorly, thinking a home bargain coconutty type one.
Big brand suncream is always half price at this time of year so buy now before it increases.

ygritte · 16/05/2015 21:46

Meant to add that this year Soltan didn't rate so highly at all.

rookiemere · 16/05/2015 21:56

I find soltan spf 50 once for Dcs really good. Ds hates having lotion put on and it genuinely stops him getting burnt all day, water repellent one.
It has the consistency of lard so I don't use it myself, I use p20, fab stuff.

dementedpixie · 16/05/2015 22:11

It was only 1 type of soltan that failed tests. Another one did fine.

dementedpixie · 16/05/2015 22:11

malibu was one that failed

lizandlulu · 16/05/2015 22:12

Another vote for ultrasun. I use the sports 20 for myself, liquid gel texture, not greasy, sinks straight in, usually around £15-16 a bottle online but once it's on, that's it. I have just bought 400ml off allbeauty.com for £27.

I use the family 30 for kids. Thicker white cream but sinks straight in. I wouldn't use anything else by choice now.

lizandlulu · 16/05/2015 22:13

Also, I used to use p20, then they changed the formula, now it find it stings my eyes when I do my face and find it greasy now. Much prefer ultrasun

specialsubject · 16/05/2015 22:14

clothes are cheaper than suncream (and protect better); so buy little ones two sunsuits and two hats, bigger kids long boardshorts and rash vests, same for you. Less exposed skin to cream up!

dementedpixie · 16/05/2015 22:16

Actually I think it was hawaiian tropic that failef

lizandlulu · 16/05/2015 22:18

Yes def Hawaiian tropic but don't know which one

blondepip · 16/05/2015 22:18

Ultrasun is fantastic stuff

HermioneWeasley · 16/05/2015 22:22

I like uktrasun as well. It's non greasy as well

Otherwise, have used Avon for years with no problems

reup · 17/05/2015 07:42

I think p20 only protects against one of the UVs can't remember if it's A or B.

Furball · 17/05/2015 07:52

P20 has changed and DOES now protect against both A & B Smile

We've been getting on great with calypso 20once a day there's also a factor 40 all day one that goes on really easy

you might find this useful Smile

reup · 17/05/2015 07:56

Thanks - thats good news!
Uktasun has quite a nice shimmery one - more for me than kids!

nightswift · 17/05/2015 07:59

Another ultrasun user - is pricey though.

EggsAreNotFromCows · 17/05/2015 08:06

We're using the Aldi kids spray which seems fine, plus a high factor stick for faces and necks (from sainsburys). Only tend to need for sticking-out bits though, as I agree get a rash vest or zippy suit for little ones.

AwayAndRunUpMaHumf · 17/05/2015 09:36

I love Ultrasun. factor 50 for the kids, 20 or 30 for me. Keep an eye out for a TSV from qvc, they're usually fantastic value.

Onedayinthesun · 17/05/2015 09:46

Thanks all! Never heard of ultrasun but will read up! We do use the UV clothes as one of my girls is a red head and very fair. Always good to get recommendations when spending a small fortune Smile

I Have found allbeauty.com best for prices although qvc do have good deals if they have it on today's special value or other offers.

Jakadaal · 18/05/2015 22:39

TKmaxx has recently had ultrasun in stock. I usually get it from QVC when it's on special offer
