Do I *need* light reflecting loose setting powder on my wedding day?

Had a bridal make over from Nars recently, and she recommended this on top of foundation, but under bronzer and blusher. I know nothing of make up, so don't know if this is really necessary (she said I'd look'flawless' in pics) - or would any other loose translucent powder do just as good a job?

The light reflecting bit would mean more of a soft focus, air brushed sort of look, so different from a regular powder. I think there would be cheaper alternatives to Nars though, if you wanted to try it on it's own and see what you think.

squoosh · 06/05/2015 16:02

The Nars Light Reflecting powder is the best loose powder in the world. Bar none. Keeps makeup in place all day and never looks cakey. Also it doesn't give a powdery flashback in photos like some can.

I live in fear of it being discontinued. (only slightly exaggerating)

squoosh · 06/05/2015 16:05

But if you're not into makeup and are unlikely to ever use it again post- wedding it may be a splurge too far.

mowglik · 06/05/2015 16:09

Try the Buffing and blending technique a la Wayne goss on YouTube. Not sure how well it photographs but my makeup staying on much better and had a softer diffuse look - can use any old face powder, it's the technique that's important

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/05/2015 16:09

I was grateful of it on my wedding day, it set everything nicely and looked good in the photos.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/05/2015 16:10

I'm sure you will be able to find a cheaper alternative though, I imagine the Nars powder was pretty pricey.

Nabootique · 06/05/2015 16:11

Oh, I want it now! Bugger you lot.

Nabootique · 06/05/2015 16:12

I heard that the Bourjois java powder stuff is a good dupe for the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders, which I think have the same idea behind them as the Nars.

BunnyLebowski · 06/05/2015 16:13

What squoosh said.

I wouldn't buy it because the lady told me to, I'd buy it because it is the bollocks. Best powder I've ever used.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/05/2015 16:16

Mowglik- how does his method differ from the Bare Minerals/Lily Lolo swirl, tap buff technique, or is it the same?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/05/2015 16:18

That Java powder looks really glittery.

Nabootique · 06/05/2015 16:20

I've only read reviews, and I think they said it does require a lighter hand than the pricier stuff, but I was thinking of giving it a go as a budget option.

mowglik · 06/05/2015 16:31

dame not sure of the lily lilo method but with this method you do your makeup as usual, down to setting face with powder, blusher, bronzer everything except liquid highlighter - then using a flattish kabuki style brush and any pressed powder you buff buff buff..

It seems to set the makeup and blend everything together but the blusher, bronzer etc doesn't move. You really buff for longer than you would just applying powder over foundation

You can try it without buying any extra bits as long as you have pressed powder and a flatish top brush

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/05/2015 16:32

Ah right, yes that's pretty much the same method, thank you Thanks

mowglik · 06/05/2015 16:40

Lol Grin

burnishedsilver · 06/05/2015 16:56

I though that light reflective powder was responsible for photos like these. Am I wrong? Is it a different product that does this.

The Nars powder doesn't do that.

squoosh · 06/05/2015 17:02

I think Make Up For Ever's HD powder is often the culprit in those photos.

BusyCee · 06/05/2015 17:12

Only feeling slightly intimidated by your knowledge now...off to YouTube buffing slightly terrified I'll end up somewhere unsavoury

Thanks ever so for the insight. Seems to be that it might be a winner then, with some pre-wedding practice too. It's £26, so not an outrageous amount given I'm saving elsewhere.

One last thing - under the bronzer and blusher, right? On top of the foundation?

OP posts:
squoosh · 06/05/2015 17:53

The loose powder goes on last, after the blusher and bronzer. It sets everything and stops the makeup from fading.

squoosh · 06/05/2015 17:53

You only need the smallest amount really.

BusyCee · 06/05/2015 18:30

Thanks Squoosh a 'it's entirely the opposite of what I've always done so feels weird!

I would splurge for my make up on my wedding day I cut a few corners but even with a make up artist my dark circles are still obvious and to be honest with some better make up I would of looked nicer in photos my biggest regret now looked lovely in person but photos were another thing so I would do all make up the. Take a few pictures print them off and see what you think if this is possible good luck and have fun :)

Cecyhall · 07/05/2015 17:03

Is the pressed version of this good? I like the sound of it but prefer pressed for travel etc
