The Met Ball - an exhibition of ugly dresses

Scrolling through the hundreds of picture on the DM website I was desperately trying to find a non fug dress. I know the Met Ball isn't about restraint but does it need to be so tacky?

I don't mean to sound like Mother Immaculata but for the love of God ladies, do you need to show so much flesh? It's the kind of thing I'd expect from Geri Halliwell circa 2001.

Now cover up or you'll catch a chill.

Thank you.
Yes.

Beyoncé totally ridiculous. How she equates her weird brand of feminism with that dress and those awful awful poses I cannot understand.

Lottapianos · 05/05/2015 13:26

'Weird brand of feminism' - couldn't agree more Thursday Smile Between telling him he shoulda put a ring on 'it' , calling her world tour 'The Mrs Carter Show' and now this madness, there's plenty of weirdness to pick from!

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/05/2015 17:55

Of the barely there dresses, I think I actually like Kim's the best Shock. There's some lovely detailing on it and the sleeves plus heavier train make it look a lot nicer the Beyonce's - which looks like something my 4 year old could have created with some self adhesive craft gems! And the embroidery was in keeping with the theme!

I thought Rihanna's was hideous. Loved Amal Clooney's.

Twinklestein · 05/05/2015 18:00

Yes I liked Amal's. And Kendal Jenner's, Alexa Chung's, and Kate Beckinsale's.

WipsGlitter · 05/05/2015 18:04

Amal is getting very thin though.

I would have loved Beyonces if the fabric had been, well fabric. The detailing was amazing. Imagine if that had been on heavy silver fabric.

Like Bee Schaffer's dress.

squoosh · 05/05/2015 18:05

Bee Schaffer's dress was nice, her mother's on the other hand.............

Not good.

I loved Anne Hathaway's dress. And I really want it to have been deliberately Star Wars for May the Fourth day :)

KneesOfTheBee · 05/05/2015 18:16

And there was me worrying about whether to show my kneecaps at a wedding this summer!

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 05/05/2015 18:17

All that money, the world's couturiers to assist - and this is the best their stylists could come up with? What a waste!

TheSpottedZebra · 05/05/2015 18:18

So none of us have mentioned Madonna. She's just not relevant any more, is she? Madonna, what happened?

And what did you do to your mouth/face?

MurielWoods · 05/05/2015 18:18

I don't usually like threads like this, particularly if it links to the Daily Mail (et al) as it is usually just the same old 'woman shaming' crap that seems rife nowadays and I think that when a bunch of women get together with the sole intention of bitching about other women, it's just f*ing ugly and unnecessary.

BUT THEN I LOOKED AT THE PHOTOS!!!

These female 'celebrities' all look tired and drawn and desperate and with the odd exception, the dresses are awful!!!

Anyway, as you were Grin

TheSpottedZebra · 05/05/2015 18:19

Oh, actually I possibly just zeroed in on the only WonkFace pic in the set there. They're not all like that.

Leviticus · 05/05/2015 19:08

Madonna looks amazing and about 35. I was worried she was looking a bit 'shiny pillow face' a couple of years ago so I don't know what's changed.

Beyonce has disappointed me in recent days with both the met dress and that bloody awful red catsuit with no front that she wore to the boxing. It's like she's looking to Kim Kardashian for fashion inspiration (shudder).

NotNowBono · 05/05/2015 19:08

Agree with all the above, although I sort of liked Rihanna's dress, on the grounds that it was so mad it was almost like one of those 18th Century court dresses that couldn't go through a door, ie, knowingly ridonkulous.

Also liked the way Helen Mirren seems to be accessorising her (stylish) dress with a weary 'wtf is everyone else wearing' half-smile in all the photos. It is a bit depressing, the race to nudity. I can't imagine Ava Gardner, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn and the like competing to turn up in three yards of illusion netting and fourteen strategically glued fruit gums.

I wonder what the negotiations were like between the various celebs' 'people' about who got to arrive last, next to last, second to last but not later than two guests after Lady Gaga, etc...

NotNowBono · 05/05/2015 19:09

I used the word 'like' five times in that post. Which, ironically, is far from the word at the forefront of my mind when thinking about last night's ensembles.

FujimotosElixir · 05/05/2015 19:19

great post notnowbono

stringbean · 05/05/2015 20:17

The theme was 'China: Through the Looking Glass', not 'Throw Something On and Forget to Look in the Looking Glass'. Lisa Bonet looks as if she's wandered in from Little House on the Prairie.

There's just an element of 'try too hard' with so many of these dresses. Agree that the stars of the past would have turned up looking a good deal more classy.

As an aside, Colin Firth is looking a bit gaunt, isn't he???

GhettoFabulous · 05/05/2015 20:26

Kanye always looks like he's just farted and followed through, doesn't he?

Fairyliz · 05/05/2015 21:32

Blimey most of them look ghastly!

All except Helen Mirren who outclasses them all. How does she do it?

meglet · 05/05/2015 22:31

The Met Ball craziness is preferable to the uninspiring snore fest that is the modern Oscar's red carpet.

Loved Rihanna in her yellow explosion and Anne Hathaways molten gold dress.

daftyburd · 05/05/2015 23:24

I agree meglet. Rihanna's dress was crazy and launched a thousand memes. It was fun and out there.

Also liked Ann Hathaway and Kendal Jenner's dresses. Plus Cara Delevigne's temporary tattoos.

meglet · 05/05/2015 23:31

kendalls mossy green sparkle was beautiful. mind you that girl would look good in a sack.

wiltingfast · 05/05/2015 23:39

God beyonce's need to display is bewildering and depressing. I suppose it gets headlines? And the masses talking about her? Urgh, what next? Will the men start arriving shirtless?

But really ball gowns are actually v hard to get right. They're either boring blah or horrific. Tho I liked Alex's Chung's.

Nettletheelf · 06/05/2015 00:56

Events like this really make me laugh. Do the celebrities pay to attend? If not, how does the event make money, unless for normal (if rich) people buying tickets in order to snigger at the dresses in person?

I like a good frock as much as anybody else but I find it comical and a little pathetic that events like this are invented as an excuse for wearing insane outfits/ taking pictures/ filling airtime/ keeping stylists and make up artists busy and we're all supposed to go along with the illusion that it's a momentous happening.

It reminds me of a fancy dress party without the humour. In fact, I know what it is. It's the Oscars 2. I think that daft events like this have multiplied in order to provide things to post on social media.

Imagine what it's like in there. You could look at a few exhibits (ooh, a Red Army uniform!), stand around hoping to be photographed and wonder how soon you could go home without appearing rude.

(I hated that green dress, but at least Kendall Jenner looked better than Beyoncé, who needs to get a grip, and Beyoncé's sister, who looked like she was wearing one of those foam rubber outfits they used to make people run around in on It's a Knockout)

MsAspreyDiamonds · 06/05/2015 05:43

Well it shows that money doesn't always buy style and taste. Some of the dresses were truly hideous (Beyonce) bit others were very tasteful (Amal Clooney).

Is it just me that thinks Jay Z has aged a lot these past few years?
