Hi,

My daughter is due to start school in September and I need to know what sort of clothes are needed for the school run. I'm trying to make more of an effort as very much a jeans and t shirt/jumper girl. Any help grateful received!

I guess it depends on the community you live in.

I live in mixed area - jeans and tshirts very common anything else and people think you are one of the working mums or off to somewhere nice. People too busy checking out type of kids to notice what parents arewearing in the first 5/6 years!

Wear whatever you want! And/or feel comfortable in. Don't worry about what anyone thinks.

If you want to make a bit more of an effort for yourself then why not book an appointment with a personal shopper at Debenhams/house of Fraser etc?

Thank you. Personal shopper sounds like a great idea as have lost confidence since being a mum. No idea where mid 30s mums should shop and what they should wear!

Look at schoolgatestyle blog for very practical/achievable and dmbl40 blog for a bit more glam. It's hard transitioning from one style/stage/age to another!

Dear God, is this a thing? I just used to turn up in whatever I was wearing that day. I didn't realise it required special outfits.

I just like to have coats with a hood as I walk it.
Wear whatever floats your boat.
Nice shoes get noticed by me.

Whatever you usually wear is fine!

You might need a waterproof coat with a hood though.

In the past month I've rediscovered dry shampoo. They've improved massively since I last tried one. It's been a life saver for the morning run here which is a 730am leaving the house

Usually something needing ironed hidden under a big coat with a hood! (Sometimes it pays to live in Raintown.) I often chuck on a nice big scarf and some interesting boots to make it look like I've made an effort.

Why would a five year old be embarrassed by what you wear? Assuming you're not planning on turning up in your pyjamas, I don't think they notice do they?

Jeans and a teeshirt/jumper sound fine. Do you have a special outfit for going to parent and toddler groups? It's the same people!

A good raincoat (ideally a smart-ish one, rather than a 'hill walking' one), and some good boots. You will look good regardless of if under the coat is a 5 year old jumper that's seen better days.

Just be vaguely clean and get a good coat.

At our school third of stay at home mums are in their running gear and the rest are in jeans and tshirts as they have babies and/or toddlers to look after. I haven't noticed anybody dressing up specifically for school run.

Surely your DD will be going to the same school as some children she has gone to nursery with, therefore same parents doing drop off? What do they wear now?

Drive/walk past a few times at pick up/drop off and check out what they're wearing if you like, but I should imagine most will be wearing 'normal' clothes. Also are the school doing an info evening for new intake? Maybe have a look then at what other folk are wearing if you wish to try to fit in.

I just think overall you should probably wear what you feel comfortable in, most of the time only coat and shoes will be seen anyway! Tidy hair and clean face are probably the most noticeable things apart from that. I don't believe in changing yourself to fit in, but I also don't think you should wear an old fleece and bootcut jeans with your hair scraped back if it makes you stick out like a sore thumb.

I sometimes feel like turning up in a ball gown to mix it up, or is that just me it always rains on the school run, so waterproof coats and biker boots for me.

At our school (very middle class) there is: mums in running gear, mums dressed for work and mums in jeans and teeshirts/jumpers etc. Honestly anything goes.

I couldn't care less anymore what I wear to school pick up.

I'm just dressed for the day when I drop dd at school . I wear mac , jeans and ankle boots . I walk and push a pram so if it's raining I wear my wax jacket with hood, jeans / leggings and my wellies ( navy blue boring ones) .

If I'm going straight to gym ( very fucking rarely I must admit ) I'm in gym gear .

On hot days I wear my jeans cami and flat sandals . And have a cardi under pram .

But that's because I hate my legs and dresses with flats looks hideous on me. I don't dress for the school, I dress in my style .

Really can never get my head round this whole idea. Just wear whatever suits the rest of your day. Eg I worked full time so wore work clothes ( hope you don't think ' being mistaken for a working mum' would be terrible).

I think the idea of dressing "for the school run" as opposed to wearing clothes when you leave the house is a concept that was born on Mumsnet, stolen by the Daily Mail - and now we're reaping the rewards.
