Gym/exercise gear. What do you wear?

CapnMurica · 29/04/2015 16:01

I am trying to lose weight and am going to the gym fairly regularly. I wear shit stuff because I don't want to spend money on nice stuff when I will (hopefully) not fit into it in two months time.

But by god, I look a show! I was next to a woman yesterday in nice exercise leggings and matching top and trainers. Hopefully when I am where I want to be I will have some nice gear.

So, what do you wear and why? Are you trying to lose weight or are you just keeping fit?

And also, where do you get nice stuff from? I like the look of some of that Fabletics stuff but but I don't fancy a subscription.

This thread is a little old now, so why not check out our round-up of the gym wear Mumsnetters recommend for something a little more up-to-date. MNHQ.

I exercise every day, so need a lot of kit - but I'm not going to spend a load of money on anything apart from trainers (Brooks) and a sports bra (Panache or Freya).

I have a lot of basics from Decathlon - capris, shorts and vests - for gym and spring/summer running.

I also have some decent Ronhill and Gore full-length tights and windproofs for autumn/winter running, and some Pure Lime base layers in a few bright colours.

Just wear ordinary cheap decathlon sport socks most of the time, but have a couple of pairs of Hillys for real distance running .

Runningupthathill82 · 29/04/2015 16:19

Oh, and in the gym it's Decathlon all the way. Their Domyos vests are about 4 quid, decent quality, come in loads of colours and are long enough never to expose your belly, whatever you're doing.

BunnyLebowski · 29/04/2015 16:22

Steer clear of Fabletics. I've heard nothing but bad things about them.
I go to the gym 3-4 times a week. I wear cropped leggings, a sports bra and a loose fitting vest.

Primark workout gear is really great. My favourite leggings are from there - they have a wee pocket above the bum which is handy for my car keys and my phone when I'm walking the dog and listening to podcasts.

I also just ordered a load of stuff from Sports Direct which arrived today - most of it was half price and it's all lovely Smile .

CoffeeBucks · 29/04/2015 16:24

I love gym gear Smile

I am also wanting to lose weight & used to wear looser stuff, but started slowly wearing running tights as I found them easier to run in plus they are high waisted and hold my belly in, I also found baggy t shirts annoyed me when doing exercises like planks or kettlebell swings. Something fitted that fits you well will probably look OK - have confidence!

I know it's bad but I get quite a lot of stuff from sports direct because it's cheap. Karrimor & Adidas stuff is nice in there, quite bright. I have some long running tights from Nike, as well as short shorts. Nike is probably my favourite brand as the sizing is good for me.

Like the poster above shoes & bra are where you need to spend the money. I have Brooks & Saucony trainers & a Shock Absorber bra.

FuckingLiability · 29/04/2015 16:25

I have just spent my entire lunch break trying to find t-shirts for the gym which aren't skin tight.

I have a pair of Sweaty Betty capris which I spent a bit more on because I wanted ones which didn't go transparent over my fat arse if I bent over. Sports bra also worth spending money on - my favourite brand is Shock Absorber. Trainers Sauconys but I also do a reasonable amount of running so need good supportive footwear.

It's a real struggle trying to find tops which are loose but not actual t-shirts with the high round neck. I'm self-conscious about my stomach and prefer tops which are looser and longer.

Morgan · 29/04/2015 16:26

Definitely Decathlon and primark and also George - got a nice pair of colored capris from there yesterday - just what I was looking for and £11.50 and not £50 Smile also H and M do some good stuff .

RecoveringPerfectionist · 29/04/2015 16:26

Sweaty Betty. Expensive but can often get a bargain in their sales. Great quality and fit, comfortable and lasts for years with very frequent washing.

CMOTDibbler · 29/04/2015 16:29

I swim, cycle or run everyday - I spend 'real' money on running shoes (cycle shoes second hand on ebay), sports bras, and goggles. Everything else is Aldi (love my new skapris), Decathlon, or Sports Direct. And ebay Smile

Madamecastafiore · 29/04/2015 16:35

Legging or running shorts with Nike Miller vests in a larger size than I really need. I hate skin tight around u boobs.

We have a nike outlet store here which is good or Gap stuff is good or Sweatu Betty when feeling flush.

Marmaladybird · 29/04/2015 16:40

I got a Fabletics order today - the things are nice but not worth more than the VIP price (whole outfit - sports bra, bottoms and baggy tee). I ordered and didn't realise it was a subscription service but because I'd used Paypal I cancelled the recurring payment. I have no idea how that will work out...

Tanaqui · 29/04/2015 16:40

Those of you looking for loose tops- fat face had great loose gym tops that don't seem too loose when bending over!

dinkystinky · 29/04/2015 16:41

Sweaty betty- buy in sales. Some H&M gym stuff good too. Invest in good supportive bra (I like Freya) and trainers.

TranmereRover · 29/04/2015 16:43

sweaty betty - including their great sports bras - but the leggings i've bought from Gap for a fraction of the SB price (& they're always having their 30% discount days) are brilliant - totally opaque, hold everything in, have the little picket at the back

Loveleopardprint · 29/04/2015 16:47

I bought some tesco's sports leggings and they are great. Wash and tumble dry well. They are cheap because I am hoping to need a smaller size soon!

daftyburd · 29/04/2015 17:54

Decathlon and Sports Direct here too. Spend more on trainers and bra.

PurpleDaisies · 29/04/2015 18:40

Sainsburys has a good fitness range. Also H and M and tk maxx (particularly the kyodan leggings that are totally opaque and a fraction of the sweaty Betty cost).

CapnMurica · 29/04/2015 18:55

Thanks all, good to know!

I'm going into town on Saturday so I'll take a look in Primark. I did get a little towel there but nothing else so far.

I do need a new bra actually as mine is too small and seriously uncomfortable. Although I really only do weights so not too much bouncing!

I'll check out those others, I like the idea of a loose-ish vest to wear over cropped leggings. I'd like something that looks fairly decent but am failing at the moment!

Firsttimer7259 · 29/04/2015 19:48

H+M do a sports vest with a bubble hem good for hiding tummies.it's loose around the middle but the hem whigh is elastic stops it riding up during sit ups or stretches

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 29/04/2015 19:52

Sports direct is great, just choose the website over the store!

I tend to wear Nike stuff which you can often get cheap in Sports Direct but their karrimor stuff is pretty good and very reasonable.

BIWI · 29/04/2015 19:56

Cropped leggings - I have Nike and Adidas ones (I have 3 pairs).

Sports bra - Lonsdale ones

Reasonably baggy t-shirts - I have Nike and LA gear ones

Gym trainers - Adidas

For running - Karrimor leggings, t-shirt and jacket

I buy all my stuff from Sports Direct, because it's dirt cheap. I'm not at all bothered about what I look like. Even if I (miracle of miracles) might start out looking attractive, by the end of my PT sessions I'm a hot, sweaty and red-faced mess!

The only exception to this is my running shoes, which are from a specialist running shop, and have tailored insoles.

MarriedtoBob · 29/04/2015 20:00

I did what you are doing, wore any old thing until I could go and buy nice bits in a smaller size. Now I go to the gym 3 times a week I have invested in decent Saucony trainers, with some lovely ¾ length leggings by USA Pro and some bright tops by Karrimor, H&M and Sainsburys. I did buy some Reebok and Nike kit ages ago but I don't find they are worth the extra money.

daftyburd · 29/04/2015 21:11

Only problem from ordering from sports direct website is a house full of giant mugs.

hettie · 29/04/2015 22:17

Primary, H&M and TKMaxx are my failsafes. You can often find sweaty Betty on eBay too

goodasitgets · 29/04/2015 23:38

Nike relay print capris or MPG ones from TK maxx
Slogan vest tops from ruffles with love - I have far too many to irritate my PT with. Things like "yeah, no, don't put me down for cardio" "burpees suck" Blush
Nike free run trainers

HelenF350 · 30/04/2015 04:40

Spend on Bra and Trainers. The rest you can get very good quality for reasonable prices at Primark, Aldi, Lidl and Sports Direct. Primark stuff is a little more fashionable but the Aldi/Lidl stuff is very good quality when thy have it in. Their running socks are particularly fantastic.
