Gym/exercise gear. What do you wear?

CapnMurica · 29/04/2015 16:01

I am trying to lose weight and am going to the gym fairly regularly. I wear shit stuff because I don't want to spend money on nice stuff when I will (hopefully) not fit into it in two months time.

But by god, I look a show! I was next to a woman yesterday in nice exercise leggings and matching top and trainers. Hopefully when I am where I want to be I will have some nice gear.

So, what do you wear and why? Are you trying to lose weight or are you just keeping fit?

And also, where do you get nice stuff from? I like the look of some of that Fabletics stuff but but I don't fancy a subscription.

This thread is a little old now, so why not check out our round-up of the gym wear Mumsnetters recommend for something a little more up-to-date. MNHQ.

Sweaty Betty and gap - the matter has excellent long vest tops. Also buy dance stuff - Bloch and pineapple - good for baggy tops and nice tracksuit pants for Pilates and walking etc.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 30/04/2015 08:42

I get the rage over fitted running tops too! Men's are rarely fitted but women's nearly always are designed to be worn very snugAngry

I buy xl running tops when I'm a size 12 on my top half, they are a perfect comfortable fit. I also buy men's but they can be a bit large in the shoulders and slide about.

TheGruffal0 · 30/04/2015 09:44

Sweaty Betty leggings were quite expensive but good strong fabric, they have washed well, and there is no risk of the transparency of those worn by the woman in front of me in yoga class, who also wears a thong!

CapnMurica · 30/04/2015 11:10

Oh dear at the see through leggings!

I have decent trainers (started couch to 5k a couple of years ago so bought them then) but everything else is shit. I got some cropped jogging bottoms and they are horrible, so unflattering. I don't know why I bought them.

Sports bra - take a look at this link to make sure you are wearing the right size, and then look at the Panache Sport or Freya wired ones. Both are very good although I personally prefer the panache for really good support and no bouncing! Neither of these work by compression so no squashed sausage boobs (which I find bloody sore after a while!)

Alternative if you prefer compression would be one of the shock absorbers - either the run, or look at the one they do which goes up to an H cup as it has a more sturdy construction

CapnMurica · 30/04/2015 11:51

Oh the bra is definitely not the right size - I bought it when slimmer and haven't replaced it yet. I've only just started exercising regularly, so it didn't seem worth it before.

I will try Panache as I don't tend to get on well with Freya. I'm definitely wearing the right size (well, I'm in between back sizes due to losing a bit, but nothing wearing on a tighter hook doesn't sort out) I get all my bras from Bravissimo normally.

Amazon had the panache quite reduced recently so worth checking there. If you don't get on with Freya you might have narrowish roots (Freya are wide!) so the Panache should help. It's pretty much true to size as well.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned but I recently got some M&S 3/4 exercise tights/leggings and am impressed. They are very comfortable for running and seem good quality. I usually get Adidas leggings but the M&S ones are cheaper and comparable.

doctorboo · 30/04/2015 13:57

Decathlon girl here, well when I'm not pregnant and only just coming of exercise restrictions because the placenta's moved up. I like the price and it washes well.
I've got a pair of men's adidas duramo running trainers which have worked very well for when I'm jogging, no knee or ankle pain whichis lovely for my cankles and caveman feet. Because I'm short I find h&m exercise stuff too long in the leg (my inside leg's 28") but do like their tops.

carrie74 · 30/04/2015 13:58

I've been really impressed with the Gap sportswear including properly opaque leggings. Not big enough pockets though for taking my phone jogging: I wear an armband instead. Gap has 30% off at mo too so worth a look.

Agree about TK Maxx; obviously what they have in is random/luck of the draw, but they regularly have Sweaty Betty, Elle, Nike, Adidas, Manuka, Calmia ...

You just have to keep going and looking. I've got some gems from there.

Greenteandchives · 30/04/2015 14:03

Loose tops! I wear XPG from Jenni Falconer which are super light and comfortable, wickable fabric and have a drawstring bottom. They are very flattering with some Nike capris. I have lots in different colours.
Have a look in TKMaxx as well, they always have a good range of stuff.

Greenteandchives · 30/04/2015 14:07

Re M and S capris, they don't have a drawstring at the waist, so have a tendency to slip down and need hoiking up a lot if you do lots of bedding, stretching and stuff.

Greenteandchives · 30/04/2015 14:08

Ha ha bending, not bedding!

holmessweetholmes · 30/04/2015 14:26

Yy to Sweaty Betty. Good quality stuff. I actually like that women's tops are more fitted (as long as they actually fit!). Baggy ones just hang from my boobs and make me look tent - like.

holmessweetholmes · 30/04/2015 14:28

Ooh - I've only just discovered TK Maxx and haven't looked at their sportswear. I feel a shopping trip coming on!

Naicecuppatea · 30/04/2015 19:31

Greentea I haven't had that problem with my M&S capris, they don't have a drawstring but don't ride down - hopefully they'll stay that way!

StrawberryTallCake · 30/04/2015 19:37

I love free people but their stuff takes forever to come and is ridiculously expensive so only order very little from there.

I bought a lot of sweaty betty stuff in the sale and found it all really poor quality compared to some leggings and tops I bought from Sainsbury's. Victoria's secret have some nice leggings and tops too.

Gilbertina · 30/04/2015 20:18

Sweaty Betty in TK Maxx? That's a bit of a revelation! I must have another look in my local store - fingers crossed!

I have quite a few SB bits and pieces (bought in sales and/or with discount) and they've all washed and lasted really well.

I've bought some Tesco leggings, shorts and bras recently and they're reasonable quality, especially for the price.

ParkingFred · 30/04/2015 21:10

I hav today order some Decathlon Domyos vests because of this thread. They're so cheap - they look perfect on the website, so I hope they're ok.

I am an exercise gear junkie, I have so much of it.

BadgersArse · 30/04/2015 21:58

I highly recommend TK Maxx. Also I was in Matalan last weekend and they had some amazing stuff very cheap.
