right, the dye stops here. That's it.

I would have the dye chopped out but I want to grow outa a pixie cut so I am sticking with the eeny weeny bit of length and letting my cobwebs come through.

I swoon at women who rock grey hair and I can't wait fir more tocome through

I really really want to do this. At the moment I'm about 50% (at a guess) grey, and using semi-perm dyes. My natural colour is dark brown. I don't really know what the best strategy is for the next few years before I'm properly grey (any ideas??).

BUT - and I'm writing this because I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same way -

My mum has her grey hair died a caramel colour. It looks nice and she spends a lot of money on her appearance, and is generally disparaging about other people aging or 'letting themselves go'. I think I would find it really hard to go grey when she hasn't done so herself.

This is crazy, right?

MonstrousRatbag · 29/04/2015 13:39

True, Margot, but they are not looking good despite the grey hair, are they?

I've got colouring between those two pictures and my greying is speeing up of late. In fact, I've got quite a stripe coming through. My even darker sister has grey temples which actually look lovely.

Just rock some bright lipstick. I now favour the kind of strident 80s pink that dowager duchesses and ladies-in-waiting wear.

MonstrousRatbag · 29/04/2015 13:39

speeding! I've no idea what 'speeing' is!

Hmmm, it's all down to personal taste isn't it. Those women look great but I think they'd look even better with dark hair. That's just my opinion and many will disagree.

OOAOML · 29/04/2015 15:33

I don't think they would look better with dark hair. And you have to bear in mind that your skin is likely to lighten as you get older as well. I don't want to end up like the old woman in the village I grew up in, with really dark hair and very pale old skin. I suppose if you have the money, time and energy to spend lots on lowlights, highlights, etc - maybe I'm just a lazy cheapskate but I'm loving my silver highlights and my only regrets about the long streaks at my temples is that they are too hidden.

daimbardiva · 29/04/2015 15:50

This thread is really inspiring -I am becoming more and more tempted to embrace my grey and I'm loving the strong looks posted here.

I've had a bit of an epiphany over the last yeAr and have stopped straightening and become at one with my natural curls. I have a 'wob' and feel more current and happier with my hair than I have done for years. I think this look could work grey - but how do I get there without chopping it all off and starting again which I really don't want to do. At the moment I have a dark brown semi permanent colour every 8 weeks and highlights a shade or two lighter. Any suggestions?

MargotLovedTom · 29/04/2015 16:18

Well as I said OOAO it's all down to personal taste.

I have a shocking amount of (grey) regrowth at the moment and I'll be putting a medium brown dye on tomorrow. I know from experience that having this medium brown colour next to my skin makes me look so much younger and more vibrant. It matches my eyebrows and makes my eyes really stand out ('pop' in beauty speak Wink). Grey next to my skin makes me look washed out, tired and vaguely ill.

Dawndonnaagain · 29/04/2015 16:44

I too am mediterranean. Dark hair, yellow olive skin. I'm allergic to hair dye and would love to be silver. As it is, at 56 I have a couple of streaks and that is all.

chocolateyy · 29/04/2015 17:33

daimbardiva Unfortunately, it's not a quick process (unless you cheat like I did!)

I would start using a lighter colour of base, and get some ash highlights, then start lightening the colour of your base, with more highlights.

Then when you take the plunge & stop with the base colour, you won't get the dreaded line

SewingAndCakes · 29/04/2015 17:35

Daimbardiva I'm planning to get a choppy pixie type cut next week and take it from there. My hair is currently purple with blue ends, and 1cm brown/grey roots. I think if it's shorter it should be easier to grow out the purple but I'm looking at grey/silver dye too

MrsLettuce · 29/04/2015 17:47

Argh dawndonna, I fear I'm going to remain similarly disappointed. Have been ready and waiting for some grey to start showing up since my late 20's. 10 years on and still not a sasauge. Now I read here that one needs to assume it'll be about 10-15 years to develop a good percentage of grey after the first ones arrive Hmm

I do like my natural colour but surely I've earnt a bit of silver by now.

daimbardiva · 29/04/2015 21:00

chocolateyy how did you cheat?!

JoyceDivision · 29/04/2015 21:36

Wow, all the ladies who have put up pics look fab!

I only have a few greys poking through but I am willing them along!

This is the cut I want to grow my hair to this

I don't mind my greys really, I have a few high lights to give me a bit of a lift but they're coming through thick and fast now so I've learned to embrace them Grin I really dislike a full on dye job on a woman who is old enough to have grey hairs, I think unless really well done it makes the skin look a bit odd.

dollywobbles · 30/04/2015 06:28

I start to embrace my 'natural highlights' about 8 months ago. I had my shoulder length dyed hair cut to a crop and stopped dying. I'm about 30-40% grey (old hair colour was very dark- almost black).
I am happy with the colour I have but wonder, does anyone know if I should use those purple shampoos now? Or are they for when you have more grey?
