right, the dye stops here. That's it.

I would have the dye chopped out but I want to grow outa a pixie cut so I am sticking with the eeny weeny bit of length and letting my cobwebs come through.

I swoon at women who rock grey hair and I can't wait fir more tocome through

I'm like marmaladybird, very fine hair that is more than 50% grey and I dye back to the red colour .

How do you suggest a red head with pale , freckled skin should go grey?
I've been considering lots of shades of blonde/ light brown lowlights to blend the grey in?

SevenEleven · 28/04/2015 11:42

I'm 38 and have had grey hairs since I was 22. My natural colour is mousy brown and I usually highlight it, but since getting many more grey hairs in the last few months I went for a full head colour at my hairdressers, which went a strange brownish-green colour, had to be re-dyed twice to get it to a more natural colour and as a consequence I had to have half the length chopped off a week later as it all broke off. So I now have sludge coloured hair of a length that really doesn't suit me and I am wishing I had just embraced the greys!

Have now changed hairdressers and am waiting until my next appointment to see just how damaged it is and what we can do to restore it to its former glory. Think I'll lay off the full head colour regardless of greys.

Loving the photos of those rocking the grey!

ChopOrNot · 28/04/2015 11:51

Weirdly (at the age of 43) the grey has finally forced me to try and develop a bit more of a look. So a bit more effort going into my make up, I try to have one "funky" or quirky thing in my outfit - whether some daisy earrings, a rockabilly type shirt, ponyskin print Vans. I have had to ditch the corals and warm colours (which worked with my old dyed, warm brown hair) and am going for blues, lots of greys, reds. I also agree that my main focus it to keep the hairstyle "young" - so I am using faux-hawk, hairbands or pretty clips, quiffing it - anything to avoid the "Pouffy old lady crop".

I feel, most days, fantastic. I am not amazing to look at, but I feel like I am not hiding anymore. And, tbf if some random stranger looks at me on the street and, in once glance, puts me at 55 years old because of my hair? - well I really don't give a fuck Grin.

Charityworker34 · 28/04/2015 13:41

Grey hair and strong makeup (like BunnyLebowski) is so good. I love silver with a red lip!

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 28/04/2015 13:43

I love the look - but the odd strands I have spotted (and pulled out!) so far are so coarse Sad

Muddymits · 28/04/2015 13:47

I have big wild hair the grey is coming in even bigger and wilder. I will look like the crazy witch soon - I don't think that is an often copied look.

Higgle · 28/04/2015 13:55

Sorry, I find the idea of grey just too depressing for words, as does m lovely Honor Blackmanish mother who remains blonde.

KissyBoo · 28/04/2015 14:52

I like the authenticity of silver hair. Personally I find the sea of greige/blonde that old ladies tint their hair depressing. Most of them would look a damn sight better going natural. My mum, after years of doing the beige head thing, went natural and she has hair that sparkles with platinum tones now. All that money wasted over years when what she has naturally is infinitely superior!

I have lightened my previous very dark brunette hair to a light brown so the line of demarcation is less obvious. Can't wait to be a silver fox. A couple more months and I'll be there.

My personal favourite silver inspiration is the Highland Fashionista. She totally shows how good itcan look. The women on this thread all look stunning too.

Higgle · 28/04/2015 15:04

I think that the grey haired look does suit some women, those who have striking features, were originaly very dark haired, have lots of curls and oe who can work at having a very modern cut with lots of make up.

For those of us who are only vaguely pretty, have straight mouse hair and have to dress in a pretty frumpy way for work anyway the addition of grey hair is often not a god look. P>S> KissyBoo my mother looks great, not beige at all.

Dellla · 28/04/2015 15:18

so, hang on, do you have to be blonde and blue eyed to make it work?

you see the ad to the right, for blog of the day, a woman with auburn hair in a pony tail with a blonde toddler, that's my hair colour (naturally) it's fairer now. and green eyes.

is it harder to go grey if you don'thave blue eyes?

Itsalldramarama · 28/04/2015 16:06

Hope not ! My mums was almost black haired with dark eyes and has gone a platinum silver ! Don't think mine will though . Except the middle parting which is almost pure white ! The rest is just a few threads ( only let it get to About 1cm at most before colouring !

burnishedsilver · 28/04/2015 16:47

Don't get too excited yet. If you're just spotting a few greys it could be 15 years before you've enough grey to actually look grey. By then the novelty will have well and truly worn off.

Chimchar · 28/04/2015 20:36

Bunny, your hair is amazing! I totally love it, and your make up too.

And Choc, your curls are beautiful, and a great colour.

I'm going grey from the crown of my hair and around the front. I hope I can rock it like you when the time comes!

Chimchar · 28/04/2015 21:19

Oooh. Chop! Totally missed you out!
Your hair too is lovely.

Three totally different looks, and all very cool.

chocolateyy · 28/04/2015 21:38

The last time I dyed my hair it was blue, but I bleached it all, then dyed it silver, and now it's about 50% natural down the lengths, and there's no line.

But I find you have to have a decent conditioner, and a leave in (I find Paul Mitchell leave in is brilliant), and a purple toner/shampoo is a must so that it sparkles & doesn't go yellow.

(my hair is naturally poker straight, but I use the Babyliss Pro Perfect Curl, which also means I only have to wash it once a week, which really helps with the condition)

rootsradicals · 28/04/2015 21:50

Aww, this thread is making me kick myself even more than I already was! I clippered all my hair off a few years ago and let my sliver grow in. I loved it and then, for some unfathomable reason, I got bored, chopped it off and dyed it again!

I so regret it now, I don't want to go the clippering route again but I'm overdue a dye and need to decide what to do next.
My hair looked so much shinier and healthier before I went and stupidly dyed it again. I'd planned to keep growing (and dying it) until it reaches shoulder length and then see how it feels. I miss my silver though Sad
Here's my silver locks:

That's lovely roots. Love the cut too.

KissyBoo · 29/04/2015 00:14

Roots- grow it out again. Your natural hair is gorgeous. Cobblers to anyone who disagrees!

rootsradicals · 29/04/2015 08:57

Thank you, that's the good old 'mumsnet cut'! Although I did notice a bit of a ridgey kind of bit going on that I needed to blend in a bit better Blush
I'm definitely inspired, everyone's silver here is beautiful, I just need to plan my next grow out, I don't think I'm ready for another buzz cut!

ewanhoozami · 29/04/2015 09:05

My stylist has just put in silver grey highlights to go with the grey I already have. Love it

MargotLovedTom · 29/04/2015 12:01

I personally think grey hair goes better with blue eyes and pink toned skin. I have hazel eyes and warm yellow tones to my skin which tans easily ( definite Autumn) and I think grey hair would do nothing for me, I think it would make me look dull and drab.

I love the sparkly look of Judi Dench but I don't think this will ever be me Sad.

BleachedBarnet · 29/04/2015 12:18

I love grey and silver hair to the point that I bleached my mid-brown hair and toned it silver when I was 25! I did start to get natural greys from the age of 18 but not to the extent I would cover them.

Anyone can rock silver hair, it's universally flattering and looks so striking. I will say if you are warmer toned normally ie. I have Mediterranean colouring and green/hazel eyes, then you will need to change your make up to adjust to the new colour. Red lipstick is your best friend still, but go for a blue cool-toned one rather than the hot orangey-reds.

The more women who embrace their natural grey the better!

MargotLovedTom · 29/04/2015 13:24

I think those women would still look with a snot green Mohican Ratbag Wink.

MargotLovedTom · 29/04/2015 13:25

...look good that should be!
