What would you do? (going grey.. with pic)

I have grey/white streaks in the parting of my hair, underneath the top layers at the sides and a fair few scattered throughout. So, I thought, sod it, I'll go grey...and haven't had a full colour for 7 months, just a few tiny highlights to break up the colour line.

However I am wavering as the old colour is brassy and I'm not sure the grey doesn't make me look half dead! I was hoping that it would be much MORE grey in which I'd persevere and hope to look classy (ha!) but it's mostly darkish still .

Do I a)persevere b) get it coloured, and if so..what? I do NOT want to go blonde.. I tend to go pink a lot and blonde looks awful on me. I used to love a real henna auburn but am not sure if I'm too old (47 and knackered!)

Any suggestions?

I am also half tempted to get it cut off pixie style but am worried I'll look like a bloke....

can you get the old colour stripped out?

I really like the style it's in btw. I think it suits you.

brightnearly · 24/04/2015 16:40

Not an expert by any means, but I think brunette with highlights would be lovely (or the reddish henna auburn!), and this length suits you really well. I'd wait with the grey for quite a bit longer! 47 is young!!!

Itsalldramarama · 24/04/2015 20:46

I love the style it really suits you :) I have the same problem with the grey ! (In 48 :( ) I also have a red tint to my skin , in naturally dark but have gone lighter brown and had highlights with an ash tone ( thi is more suited to cool skin tones )

Valsoldknickers · 24/04/2015 20:54

Love your hairstyle as it is Medusa!

If I were you I would go a light brown and get highlights and then get the colourist to put toner over them to stop them looking too blonde or brassy. You will look fabulous!!

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 24/04/2015 22:42

Ok I'll keep the hair... due a trim but generally it's easy to live with !
So.. light brown but ashy?

Oh and this pic makes me look like I have very saggy boobs... it's just my cardigan honest (flat chested as hell Grin)

I really wanted beautiful ice white hair and no colouring.. sob... guess I'll look again in ten years :D

I love the style, looks great on you. I would keep the colour rather than go grey.

SouthWestmom · 24/04/2015 23:08

So I had very long red Hennaed hair, let the roots grow and had it chopped exactly like yours. I also have a similar face and frame. After about six weeks it was awful so I went pixie. It is now hideous and not long enough anywhere to style - I want a bob but am three months off at least.
Keep the length! I wish I'd had grey different lengths added to speed the process up.

hauntedhenry · 25/04/2015 07:47

Your hair is nice, medusa. The style really suits you. I think the problem is the washed out old colour rather than the grey. If you want to persevere with the grey get the hairdresser to tone down the brassy colour and have highlights again. If you go down the colour route I'd avoid blonde or red, based on personal experience I think it makes you look older. I'd go for a brunette or a light ashy brown with some highlights to break it up.

BloggersNetwork · 25/04/2015 08:57

Your hair is really nice and stylish. I think if you cut it shorter it will ages you, and if you go grey it will age you too. I would go natural with caramel and honey highlights and keep the haircut. It's perfect.

Kewcumber · 25/04/2015 09:01

My highlights go very brassy too and have quite a bit of grey in very patchy streaks so not really an option to persevere with my own silvery grey just yet. SO at present I have - platinum blonde highlights as white as they could get them with an additional toner to to strip own the warmth, and purple streaks in between (yes purple) I use LOreal professional purple shampoo as a toner once a week (leave on for 20 mins) to keep the yellows out.

Will dig out a picture

Kewcumber · 25/04/2015 09:01

I also don;t suit caramel tones as my skin is quite pink

Kewcumber · 25/04/2015 09:05

The colour isn't quite right in that photo the purple almost looks pick - it's quite a deep/medium purple

I am going to go against everyone here. You have done 7 months without dye - fgs don't get back on the treadmill!! Maybe get something - a few highlights - to blend in the regrowth (leaving the roots natural).

Or go pixie - you have lovely cheekbones and I think you would look great with a pixie. If you don't like it - hell, hair grows. Loads of product, funk up the shortness for a few months and grow it out. Without the dye.

Couple of things which may help

www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/magazine/article4417282.ece?shareToken=08764324fa0e156ad1f8d7fcc0db7520 About the Times beauty editor going grey. I think she looks younger in the pics with her grey hair than with the dyed hair.

And then there is my fred from about 8 weeks ago. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2316020-To-chop-or-not-Honest-opinions-please

Truckingalong · 25/04/2015 12:38

DO NOT CUT IT!!!! It will age you in an instant. I'd grow it a tiny bit longer or keep as it is, as it looks lovely on you. Have a look at bronde too - it's all the rage! It's a cross between blonde and brown and is really flattering on most people.

ChopOrNot · 25/04/2015 12:40

Trucking you say that on every thread where someone contemplates cutting their hair short. Do you have a short-hair phobia Grin?

ihave2naughtydogs · 25/04/2015 14:05

I decided to grow out almost all blonde hair (way too many highlights) and I left it alone for 7 months .In a moment of madness I decided to get a t bar to blend everything better. Disaster ! It looked like I had tiger stripes and was so unnatural against my 3 inch roots. So back to square one growing out the t bar. I have some grey around my temples but I like it ,I think it suits my cool complexion well. And brightens my face.I am 42

Shonajay · 25/04/2015 14:44

Platinum, use a toner and silver shampoo to prevent brassy bits. I think it would be funky.

Kewcumber · 25/04/2015 15:25

Thats what I do Shona - platinum highlights (minimises regrowth) to be fair you don't have to go for purple like me!

I'm 50 btw so probably similar isues, this is me (on my 50th birthday with DS) with platinum highlights without purple - probably a bit darker natural hair colour than you and probably a little more grey/silver

Kewcumber · 25/04/2015 15:26

Hmm - not sure you can really see colour properly in that but it'll give you an idea.

airedailleurs · 25/04/2015 15:37

The Times beauty editor looks sensational with grey hair...I started going greyer than henna could handle about a year ago and have been using chemical dyes (rather reluctantly) since then. Maybe I will pluck up the courage to stop after seeing this link! Thanks Chop

OP I think your hairstyle suits you and the honey/caramel hair colour adds warmth to your face.

Happy36 · 25/04/2015 15:42

I think your hairstyle is lovely. I think an auburny colour would suit you.

RitaCrudgington · 25/04/2015 15:46

I'd persevere- I think the colour is nice - and definitely keep the length, which is great.

KissyBoo · 25/04/2015 22:09

I think your naturall colour coming through is lovely. It will suit you more any other manufactured colour. I personally think your haircut suits you so would brave the grow out until chin length.

The Times beauty editor looks absolutely stunning.

I am currently growing mine out at 40. I have had enough of dyeing it every two weeks and still the colour looking too warm or dark and then washing off my temples. I am definitely at a 'fuck this shit' when it comes to hair dye.

I often see women who are salt and pepper etc and think how great they look. I never think they look old because they don't look old but luminous in reality.

Truckingalong · 25/04/2015 23:13

Chop - lol, you're right, I am a bit of a stuck record!!! I just honestly think unless you're 20 and/or stunningly beautiful, short hair is an instant ager!

Who is the Times Beauty Editor? Did a quick google and saw Sarah Vine Confused
