Does anyone (successfullly) wear 1950's style/swing dresses/outfits?

Ive always loved the style but never been brave enough to try it. Ive always stuck to jeans and a jumper but i would like to branch out a bit and maybe break myself in gently, however i am worried about wasting money on things that dont suit and looking ridiculous. I love the dresses but they arent very practical for day to day wear so would love advice on what sort of outfits i could wear. Are there any websites i could go to for ideas or advice?

Forty - what top would you wear with those shorts? They are lovely - though I have very ghostly white glow in the dark legs!!!

dylsmimi · 23/04/2015 23:06

Ohhh loveable that dress is beautiful!
But yes my colleague wore the same style with net underskirt this week - to sit at a desk all day! Hmm
The poor dress wasted inside an office when it should be out dancing and socialising Grin

Dyls depending on the situation I wear different tops : www.vivienofholloway.com/women-c70/tops-c12#page2 for a day time beach visit type thing

www.vivienofholloway.com/women-c70/tops-c12/gypsy-top-classic-black-small-pink-trim-p126 for a slightly more covered look and sometimes a fitted tee shirt if I'm feeling exceptionally low key

I also have white legs and have been known to wear a nudish pair of tights or when it gets chilly thicker black tights

dylsmimi · 24/04/2015 10:41

Thanks those tops are lovely I thank you but not sure my bank account will ! Wink

What's the waist like on that one goodasitgets? I really fancy it but I normally wear a 14 from Lady V - I do however own holster hips so it being bigger there isn't a worry.

goodasitgets · 24/04/2015 11:19

I would say fairly standard more towards roomy. I'm an 18 in isabella if that helps and I got an 18 in the lady volup

lynniep · 24/04/2015 11:23

yes, I wear 50s dresses all the time. If I go out I do the full hair, makeup etc, but I don't bother on a normal day.
Voodoo Vixen, Lindy Bop, Hell Bunny. Collectif. british retro. Don't own any lady V.

Try www.aspirestyle.co.uk/products/clothing/page/all for some lovely designs.

Also the supermarkets are bringing out some really cute 50s style dresses at the mo, which aren't over the top. I bought this the other day and I love it!

Hmm I suspect it might be too big then. Might try anyway as it has the tie...I love the colour!

goodasitgets · 24/04/2015 11:29

I do, it looked so amazing on camera! Think I might try one of the new styles when they announce them

Lady voluptuous new styles are up. Not enabling at all Grin

ScrambledSmegs · 24/04/2015 14:09

I sometimes go mildly 40's/50's - I don't go full on (mainly because my kids would laugh at me) but will quite often wear a dress or skirt/top from lindy bop etc, and depending on the outfit will wear either heels or ballet flats with it.

I did wear a lovely Vivien of holloway dress with the full hair/makeup/accessories shebang to the Secret Cinema back to the future event last year, and didn't feel daft because everyone was dressed up too, but I couldn't do it every day.

Oh, also I have the Ioania dress from Lindy Bop, it's lovely although I think it needs a thin belt, not the tie back attached to it which I unpicked, and you really need the right bra to hoick your embonpoint into the correct position otherwise you end up with a gape. Also it has quite on the arms. It is oddly modern in colour, I don't feel like I'm wearing a vintage-style dress.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/04/2015 14:23

Quite tight on the arms. And thinnish of fabric, at least in comparison to the VoH dress I have.

Btw, if you're feeling quite flush or have a shoe addiction, have a look here for lovely vintage-style shoes - Agnes & Norman. Very beautiful and comfortable shoes, I have some t-bars in tan from last year and I wear them all the time. Pricey but they do come down somewhat in the sales.

FortySixandTwo · 24/04/2015 16:34

Goodas you temptress you Grin my poor wallet

FortySixandTwo · 24/04/2015 16:47

Scrambled shoes are a whole different addiction of mine :) and some of those are beautiful !!

goodasitgets · 24/04/2015 18:11

A lovely look if you don't want dresses is 3/4 length candy striped pedal pusher trousers with a boat neck top and short, fitted cashmere cardigan. My mum dressed like that in her teens. She looked stunning.

Last year BHS had an amazing range of fifties style dresses all at around £50. I bought one and everyone thought it was £££ or made by a costumier. Don't know if they have them in again this year but they were a real find.
