DH & I going for the weekend for our silver wedding anniversary.
I have a new mac, some comfy shoes and a stylish bag.
We're going to a smart bistro rather than fancy restaurant should I dress up or down?
Please help my look decent, I'm normally a jeans & jumper wearer.

Simple and stylish not over the top or try hard. In fact good quality jeans and a simple top would be fine in a bistro.

estcetelegant · 21/04/2015 20:45

Great thanks. DH thinks I should take a fancy dress but I really don't want to be over done.
Any other tips that'll make me look stylish?

Congrats.

A Breton top perhaps 3/4 sleeved and scarf tied jauntily. Good manicure, echo the simple rather than try too hard. Perhaps treat yourself to a lovely new lipstick.

mirpuppet · 21/04/2015 21:49

Not a Breton top.

Kittykatmacbill · 21/04/2015 22:09

Nice shirt or a Henley if skinny enough to pull it off?

BunnyLebowski · 21/04/2015 22:18

A Breton top with a jauntily tied scarf makes me think of this which is potentially not the best look for Paris Grin .

polyhymnia · 21/04/2015 22:53

Not a Breton top and jaunty scarf - will look like fancy dress!
Simple manicure yes. But really no need for any 'special' outfit or makeup just reasonable day to day grooming.

Oxfordblue · 21/04/2015 23:34

As your going out to dinner to celebrate, dress up ! Wear what you'd wear to a smart meal in this country.

(Please don't end up looking like Marcel Marceau Confused)

Shonajay · 22/04/2015 00:22

Have you got a dress you love and feel fab in? I've got an ancient Hobbs fit and flare black dress that's about 15 years old from oxfam, and I dress it up with a scarf, so,e silky tights and a killer pair of very pointy kitten heel shoes, or a cool scarf. Just dress like you're going to a semi smart do here and have a fabulous time x

ElizabethHoover · 22/04/2015 00:55

Everyone looks like tourists in Paris. Wear comfy shoes.

Postchildrenpregranny · 22/04/2015 01:02

Sounds to me that your DH wants you to dress up-for him . So I would .
Don't know if you've been before, but Paris is lovely and very romantic . How lovely to be spending your 25th there. Enjoy .
Parisians are very stylish-its not a myth.

coffeenut · 22/04/2015 02:02

I would wear a fitted black dress, something simple without being too dressy (perhaps with ankle boots). Hot pink lip (or red if suits you better). I agree your DH wants you to dress up - please don't just wear jeans and a nice top.

estcetelegant · 22/04/2015 07:18

Thanks so much the your help. I'm 51 & not in the least bit stylish or beautiful

I've got ankle length jeans, nicer full length (7s) jeans & some Boden Bistro crops. Tee shirts are tricky because most of them are Boden bretons definitely don't want the MM look but I do have a nice navy knitted blazer.
Have a nice silky top for dinner one night and a posh navy shift (that DH likes). Tan driving shoes, some cute navy ballet flats and gorgeous tan bag. Sadly no stylish scarves but could happily go shopping Wink.

Not sure all this will fit in a carry on bag.
Have never been to Paris so very excited.

No silk scarves, you say? I think you and DH need to pay a visit to Hermes then Wink

Bonsoir · 22/04/2015 07:52

The Breton top look is over, over, over in Paris. You would feel totally out of place wearing one.

This spring there is lots of white lace/embroidery and big flower and bird print.

TheWordFactory · 22/04/2015 09:18

I agree not a breton.

You'll just look like you're taking the piss in France Grin.

Also don't worry what the French might wear; tis usually very safe.

Just make sure you have very comfortable shoes, as I'm sure you'll be doing a lot of walking and the pavements can be quite rickety. Ballet flats sound good.

Dinner; wear what you like yourself most in. This is your anniversary. An evening with a man who loves you and has done for a long time Grin.

Enjoy.

AgathaF · 22/04/2015 09:34

The navy shift dress sounds lovely, perhaps wear that with something nice to accessorise it. I definitely wouldn't wear jeans and a breton top.

EuphemiaCoxton · 22/04/2015 10:04

These are from Zara

Help me look stylish for Paris please?
polyhymnia · 22/04/2015 10:09

Definitely no Bretons. The nice jeans plus silky top and shift for the evenings sound ideal . Do wear comfortable shoes for the day as you need to walk to get the best out of Paris.

polyhymnia · 22/04/2015 10:11

Boden bistro crops good for day as an alternative to the jeans. Maybe get a couple of nice plain tops to go with them.

Pantsalive · 22/04/2015 10:40

Not sure if it'd suit your shape but the White Company had a couple of very nice broiderie anglaise tops here which would look lovely with jeans or crops and a blazer.

estcetelegant · 22/04/2015 12:34

Really helpful advice & lovely words, thank you. I've actually got a white cotton top from WC but dismissed it as too summery, but it looks like it'll be hot & sunny.
Off to hide DH's shorts or he'll insist on taking them Grin.

Sounds to me like some stylish jewellry or a really pretty scarf would accessorise that navy shift nicely ...
You've made me want to go back (DH and I have been three times plus twice with DDs and I've done a trip to stay with friends ) It was also the first place I ever went abroad/flew to ,with a friend. We were very broke but it was wonderful . (I was 23)
Sounds as though you have good 'capsule' wardrobe planned . Do hope you get good weather. It's lovely sitting people watching in the pavement cafes .

worldgonecrazy · 22/04/2015 16:37

I usually wear smart jeans and nice top for restaurants (even some of the Michelin ones) and bistros in Paris, or a day dress for day times or shift dress for evenings. I tend to avoid prints as it's so easy to get them wrong.

Ballet flats or stylish comfy shoes for walking during the day time, and sometimes I wear them at night and change into heels on the way to the restaurant.

Have a lovely time - I'm very jealous as I'm not going back to Paris until later this year or early next eyar.

saltnpepa · 22/04/2015 16:45

Do not wear a Breton top with a scarf tied ooh la la you will look ridiculous. Keep away from the British love of patterns and man made materials. Wear a silk blouse, cashmere cardigan, fitted trousers and good shoes. No stripes!
