Gradual tanners, which one should I try?

lucysmam · 18/04/2015 10:18

Dp's mam is getting married in August, I'd like to wear a dress but without my usually pasty legs.

Any recommendations for gradual tanning lotions I can try out between now and then? (not toooo £££ please)

thankyou Smile

The St Tropez gradual tan is the best I've tried by a mile.

milkysmum · 18/04/2015 10:51

I've always got on well with the dove one- and I suspect much cheaper than st tropezWink

frankietwospots · 18/04/2015 11:00

I'm using an M&S one at the moment and it's really light, dries quickly and doesn't reek of digestives.

Cocolepew · 18/04/2015 11:12

I like the Garnier one, they do a light and dark one.

YourBubzYourRulzHun · 18/04/2015 12:10

I would use Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs instead. Goes on really easily, doesn't smell and looks natural. I used it every day last summer.

XiCi · 18/04/2015 12:19

Second that the garnier one is really good.
Also like the Dove one

DidgeDoolittle · 18/04/2015 12:24

Second Sally Hanson. It's amazing stuff.

Glad that there is a post that I can rave about my new purchase on!
I bought the Dove gradual tanner a few weeks ago and used it for the first time the other night after a bath.
It obviously comes out white with it being a moisturiser so I didn't expect too much from it, however I'm so pleased with the colour! And I'm a huge self-tanner but since being pregnant I haven't had the energy and have been pale for months which I've not liked but got in with it. This moisturiser gives an even tan and you don't have to do any prepping etc like you would with a normal tan. I have no idea why anyone would go back to using tan after this, I'm sure I won't be! I use the medium to dark as I do like a dark tan. I've only used it the once and the colour is lovely, so I'm looking forward to applying it again and it going even darker. They do a lighter colour too. The only thing I will say is wear gloves when applying it! I didn't think I'd need to but my palms were orange the next day, which is the only downfall!

I used the lighter of the Dove ones last summer and was really pleased with it. The smell is pretty innocuous, unlike most Dove products, and I had no issues with streaking or orange hands. Will probably use it again this summer.

SanityClause · 18/04/2015 14:33

I find they make my skin smell so horrible, I feel really embarrassed.

How long does the Sally Hansen one stay on for? Is it just a one day thing? Can you use it all over? How long does a can last?

FelixFelix · 18/04/2015 14:37

Sally Hensen airbrush legs is fab. I am really pasty but never used fake tan much, and got some to use for a wedding recently after being recommended it by a friend. It applies so easily and is near enough impossible to get wrong. Scrubs off easily in the shower too but doesn't rub off or transfer on to any clothes when you're wearing it. I am converted Grin

mrsmeerkat · 18/04/2015 14:47

I would to find a good gradual tanner. If yo want a light colour though you cannot beat rimmel sunshimmer in light. It washes off tough but is lovely for a wedding of something and natural colour... don't buy medium as it's very fake looking.

RL20 · 18/04/2015 14:55

Remus maybe you didn't get the orange palms because you used the lighter colour? Not sure, but overall it's a great moisturiser isn't it Grin.
I would have loved to have got on with the Sally Hansen one as I like her nail products. But it was too much of a 'red' colour for me rather than brown. I tried it once after my 'holy grail' spray was discontinued - no idea why! I used to use Bourjois bronzing spray and it was amazing! So I bought the Sally Hansen one to try and replace it but I couldn't get it to go on even. Everyone's different though, it might be a case of trial and error seeing as you can't test before you buy!

Third the Garnier one :)

trickyex · 18/04/2015 21:18

M&S, doesn't smell too strong IMO.

I've tried the Dove and Garnier and much prefer the Dove. I'm very pale however find after three applications the light tan is definitely there without looking patchy or orange. I've started using it already for days like today when I want to wear cropped trousers and sandals.

lucysmam · 18/04/2015 21:40

Thank you all!

St. Tropez is out of budget unfortunately.

The Dove one seems fairly popular so I'll pick some up next payday - more than likely the lighter one to start with but if that goes ok I might try the darker one.

I'll get some gloves as well, thanks for that idea!

Is Airbrush Legs the aerosol one? I think I used one of those yeeears ago. I wouldn't mind not looking pasty all summer though if I can find one of the lotion type ones I like rather than wash off after wearing iyswim.

I noticed the dove is on offer in boots at the moment. I might try it myself...

villainousbroodmare · 18/04/2015 22:34

A lifelong fake tanner, I find that the trickiest areas to get perfect are feet, ankles and knees. So for a novice who needs to get their legs out, I reckon Sally Hansen is the safest. But why not practice with Dove in the meantime and see how you like it?

MendipsMary · 18/04/2015 22:35

I use Dove or Superdrug's own brand. Dove one smells lovely.

Sally Hansen Airbrush legs is the best thing ever though! It is an aerosol but you spray it in your hands then apply. It's like a really great foundation for legs.

Karbea · 18/04/2015 22:35

Hi lucysmam I got bondi sands yesterday from super drug, haven't tried it yesterday but it has good reviews.

Amethyst24 · 18/04/2015 23:20

In defence of the St Trop, I think it's about £18 for a big bottle, and that lasts me all summer with alternate-daily use. I've tried the Dove and Garnier ones and they're nowhere near as good. When I visit my family in South Africa people always ask me if I've been somewhere else first because it looks so natural.

Just checked - it's £14.50 online at Waitrose Grin

frankietwospots · 18/04/2015 23:22

20% off all fake tan at the moment at M&S.

I bought Sally Hansen last year but didn't really get on with. I agree with RL20 that it's a bit 'red' and I also prefer a gradual moisturiser that develops over a few days and can be topped up, rather than having to start from scratch every morning with the Airbrush spray since it doesn't last if you have a shower.

You know if you use gloves, does it rub in the same way as using your hands? And do you pre-moisturise with gradual tanners too?
