My lips have been red and sore like this for about 4 weeks now. I've tried lip balm, blistex, sudocream, metanium, coconut, tamanu, pawpaw, anti fungal cream from the doctor and even steroid/antibiotic cream from the hospital. Nothing is working.
Any body got any ideas? It's really really getting me down. I've even taken anti histamines incase it's an allergy.

Try vicks unless it stings too much. Sorts me out every time they get hideously bad. I put it on overnight and I have godawful dry lips all year round.

On a different note - don't you have a nice complexion on your chin, if that is what your whole face is like then lucky you Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 17/04/2015 17:05

It looks like chapping/dermatitis. My daughters get lips like this in cold windy weather. But it also could be a reaction to something you wore on your lips. The miracle treatment for my dds (dd1's hands were like this yesterday) is Weleda weather protection cream, from the baby range. It calms it all down overnight. Worth a try maybe?
www.amazon.co.uk/Weleda-Baby-Weather-Protection-Cream/dp/B000ORYFGE this is the one.

TheSpottedZebra · 17/04/2015 17:11

Vicks? Whaaaat? Don't try that, that would sting and make it worse!

You've not developed a habit of licking your lips, have you? I find that 8 hr cream is really good when my skin is chapped and sensitive, but I also know that others hate it!

Hippychickster · 17/04/2015 17:20

Thanks both of you. I might try the Vicks tonight as I've got some but it does seem a bit harsh?
I'll try the other stuff next.

Hippychickster · 17/04/2015 17:21

That's what I thought about Vicks! But tbh I'll try anything now.

The Elizabeth Arden 8hr lip balm good when everything else in the list failed. I sometimes get this and I think it's a mild allergy triggers it - strawberries or something like that. Honestly you think Confused £20 for a lip balm but it's brilliant.

MyNameIsSuz · 17/04/2015 17:24

Nothing usually works on my lips but I've found the Burts Bees one (the little round pot not the stick) works amazingly well. And it smells lovely!

TheGirlFromIpanema · 17/04/2015 17:24

Zebra that was my first reaction but I swear it works! It was actually on here that I received the tip...

Something to do with what it having super-duper healing powers ingredients.

I have put it on before and it stung too much so wiped it off again, but usually it works like a dream Smile

MonstrousRatbag · 17/04/2015 17:25

Apply absolutely nothing for 48 hours, I would say, to avoid exacerbating the symptoms. Not even cleanser, balm or lipstick.

Have you been eating citrus fruits, kiwi or pineapple, or any other enzyme-y foods that could trigger a reaction? If yes, I'd avoid those too, at least for a while.

I don't know what to suggest. Blistex usually works for DS, who gets this. Maybe Cetraben moisturiser? Whatever you use, I'd leave it at least a day before trying something else.

Hippychickster · 17/04/2015 17:30

I'm going to try the Vicks but all other suggestions sound good. Thanks so much for your replies.

Eucerin dry skin intensive lip balm. My lips have gone like this due to the medication I'm on. Saw the lip balm in Boots and bought it as it says it helps with redness around the mouth due to dryness and it's made a huge difference. Here

that helps sort the redness out but isn't moisturising enough for me to sort the dryness out so I add 8 hour cream over the top.

Hippychickster · 17/04/2015 17:32

Monstrous ratbag, I did try leaving them for 3 days a couple of weeks ago but in the end I could only eat crisps and slices of apple as I couldn't open my mouth wide enough to put anything else in!

Have you tried Bio-oil?

PrimroseEverdeen · 17/04/2015 18:15

I've got exactly the same thing at the moment. I seen to get it most years in April May time. I think it's an allergy. Rather than Vicks, I've found germolene can help. Mine is so painful and I can't take antihistamines because I'm breastfeedingSad

PrimroseEverdeen · 17/04/2015 18:16

Also, I would change your toothpaste, I've often found this can help.

RecoveringPerfectionist · 17/04/2015 18:31

Can you see a dermatologist? I had a skin condition a few years ago and like you was trying all manner of different things in a very short space of time out of desperation; it was impossible to work out what was making it better / worse (my first reaction to your post was that's a lot of products to use within that timescale, but I understand why!). Anyway, doc referred me to dermatologist who got me sorted.

I did find the Neal's Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm helped a lot and generally is good for lots of skin conditions.

I've googled that Elizabeth Arden stuff and loads come up. What's its exact name?

XiCi · 17/04/2015 18:41

La Roche posay Cicaplast balm worked for my Dd when she had similar in the winter

BigRedBall · 17/04/2015 18:42

Oh dear. This happens to me particularly in cold weather, or if I wear a lipstick that doesn't agree with my lips. I got a horrible bout of it last Winter. The only thing that helped was Lansinoh nipple cream and blistex. Yes. I was soaking my lips in a layer of blistex then covering them in a thick layer of Lansinoh and reapplying when needed.

burnishedsilver · 17/04/2015 18:54

My local pharmacist recommended la roche posay cicloplast baume when Ds had something similar. There was an almost immediate improvement.

midnightmoomoo · 17/04/2015 21:20

Sounds odd but what about trying the cream for cracked nipples, Lansinoh?

FrugalFashionista · 17/04/2015 21:32

Definitely cheilitis. My daughter and I sometimes get this. Cicaplast Baume or some cream that contains zinc (Fissan nappy cream works for me), and B vitamin supplements if you can't open your mouth wide enough. I find beeswax lip products (Burt's Bees, Badger Balm, pure beeswax) better for maintenance than vaselins, for some reason they feel drying and make dryness worse in the long run.

hettie · 17/04/2015 22:25

Another for ciclopast balm..I had a hideous red sore patch between lips and nose that had lasted 5 weeks (plus all sorts of creams) and ciclopast cleared it up in about 5-7 days...

CapnMurica · 17/04/2015 22:29

There's a cream you can buy from Boots and the like, it's over the counter and slightly medicated. It tastes vile!

I wish I could remember the name of it for you. But it worked brilliantly for me when I had the same, got some for DSS who had similar after a bad bout of chicken pox.

CapnMurica · 17/04/2015 22:30

Cymex!

They do a coldsore one as well which I've never used. I'd try this before any of the other things as it's cheaper!
