Can someone help me find a dress for a 1920s themed wedding please?

I am attending a 1920s themed wedding in a couple of months. The invitation urges us to channel our inner Gatsby. The venue is an extremely posh hotel.

Unfortunately, since I am short (5,2) and a bit fat (size 16) with large hips, the 1920s is the very worst decade for me style wise.

I've looked at quite a few dresses online but everything I've found so far is going to make me look shit. Anything with a dropped waist makes me look pregnant and fringing?

Can anyone suggest anything that will help me attend this event with my dignity intact? I can afford to pay about £150 for a dress.

Have you seen this site?

Alternatively what about something more early 30s, bias cut?

TheWhiteRoad · 11/04/2015 14:24

No I hadn't seen that site Sorrel. Lots of possibilities there so thanks.

Bias cut would work far better with my body shape but would it be 'cheating'?

how about this one

TheWhiteRoad · 11/04/2015 14:38

That's nice fanny. Flattering shape at the bottom.

there's quite a few on ebay too - some very costume, but others not. Depends how much you want to spend and whether you would wear it again

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 11/04/2015 16:21

So funny, I posted something similar a week or so back - I have a 1920s ball to attend in June. I'm a bit taller than you, similar size and hourglass so the straight up and down makes me looks like a sack of potatoes (need to have a nipped in waist). Plus I don't do little straps or above the knee.

I spent hours trawling the internet looking for something elegant and not too fancy dress (would hope to wear it again). I found what I think is the holy grail of 1920s dresses. It fits beautifully, makes me look a size smaller, has a nod to the 1920s without making me feel like an extra from the Great Gatsby and has a great split up the side so although long, doesn't feel too long iyswim. I know I will be able to wear it more than once too. The colour will see me through summer and winter too.

Going to get an art deco style crystal hair clip from China ebay and lots of pearl bracelets. Job done....

Hair clip so you won't need a hat. You could also go with a feather band or clip....

If in doubt I tend to go for halterneck style dresses because they seem to be much more flattering!

Something like this would work in the future: www.foreverunique.com/silver-glitter-tiered-ruffle-halter-neck-maxi-dress-tj4149

If you don't feel happy in a dress would you consider a women's tuxedo?
It was quite the thing for women to wear them in the1929s
I also think they look very chic Grin
