Persuade me a fringe is a bad idea....

I'm rubbish with hair, tend to just wash and leave it. I think a fringe would suit my face shape but not sure I can handle to maintenance right now.
I did try a long side swept fringe last year but ended up having to clip it out of the way as got an eye infection within days of having it cut in.
How hard is a fringe to look after? Would you do it if you were me?

I cut in a fringe about a year and a half ago and I like it. I just straighten the fringe and the roots of the rest of my hair and leave the rest wavy.

It can be a pain on a hot day as fringes stick to sweaty foreheads, but you can always clip it out of the way on hot days.

bananaramadramallama · 10/04/2015 18:20

I go between fringe/no fringe and bobbed/long hair all the time.

I currently have long hair, and cut the fringe back in a couple of months ago as I was getting bored with it; I usually cut it when damp, and use proper hair dressing scissors (I cut mine to just below eye length when wet and it bounces up to just under eyebrow length when dried, I also shape it so not dead straight across).

CointreauVersial · 10/04/2015 18:21

I have always had a fringe; I have a long face and big forehead (nicely wrinkled nowadays) so it suits me better.

I grew it out once, and whenever I looked in a mirror all I saw was a great expanse of spammy forehead. No no no.

I just trim it myself every few weeks - dampen it, comb it straight, grab in one hand, look in a mirror, trim with sharp scissors - easy. I dare say it isn't always perfect, but you'd never notice.

And dry shampoo is your friend if your fringe needs a quick revive between washes.

MerryKat · 10/04/2015 18:48

I had one cut in two months ago. I agree it made me look more "styled" and I got lots of compliments. However It got on my nerves by the 3rd day and I'm growing it out!

PetiteBateau · 10/04/2015 19:16

Grin spammy forehead!!!

JenniMoo · 14/04/2015 15:30

I think I'm going to go for it. You lot were supposed to stop me!

Do it!

boxcar · 14/04/2015 20:36

bananaramadramallama I'm possibly your doppelganger!

Never found it high maintenance. Can even do a reasonable job of trimming it with nail scissors if necessary!

PetiteBateau · 14/04/2015 21:10

Did you do it? Show us a picture

JenniMoo · 14/04/2015 21:26

Not yet, haven't booked a hair appointment yet! I'll try and add a 'before' photo to my profile.
I'd love any ideas of what to ask for. I'm thinking fairly substantial and not to straight and sharp...

Watch out if you've got wavy hair, I get one cut in every now and again, it looks nice when it's just been blow dried, but the merest hint of humidity from either damp hair or sweat and it separates out and goes into really unattractive uneven curls and wisps. Also I wear sunhats a lot in summer, sunhat plus fringe means the sweaty version of the above so you can't take the hat off.

LesleyKnopeFan · 15/04/2015 07:43

I had a fringe from 11 to 35. Grown it out now and I prefer the style......but, because I have oily hair, I didn't moisturise my forehead and now have a permanent frown, so the fringe will be returning.

I trim my own too. Invest in a good pair of hairdressing scissors and trim it in stages, remember, if it's wet, it will dry shorter. Took me several years to realise this and spent many weeks looking boddish

Pumpkinette · 15/04/2015 07:59

I say go for it. I got one last year (first time since I was a child) and I love it. I really wish I had done it sooner. I keep mines really short and it gives me a nice 50's vibe. My hair is naturally curly so I tend to give I a quick blow dry and a once over with straighteners or hot air styling brush after I wash my hair. On in between days I use dry shampoo if needed and it holds up fine. I love that I can also just clip it back with some clasps if I CBA with it that day.

daftyburd · 15/04/2015 12:03

Do it! I got one for the first time since I was a child about two months ago. I love it and wish I had the guts to have done it earlier. A work colleague told me I looked about twelve with it. Much cheaper than Botox.
My hairdresser does free fringe trims and they are a fancy one in the city centre.

daughterofliz · 15/04/2015 16:31

I can't not have a fringe, I look awful without one. I personally think most people look better with one but would probably rather have no fringe than a too long fringe that went in my eyes (or one eye) all the time. Eyebrow length is perfect but of course it doesn't stay that way for long, so I do tend to snip at my own fringe in between haircuts. The good thing about that is you can have more than one go at it - I tend to do mine in stages, don't cut too much off and then decide a few days later if any more needs to come off. I have curly hair so I don't have to worry about getting a perfectly straight line as it won't be straight when dry anyway.

JenniMoo · 22/04/2015 07:25

Today's the day. I have my hair appointment this afternoon. Any tips what to ask for?

I have a big round face but want a full fringe, not the sideswept one. Is this hair suicide?

IHeartKingThistle · 22/04/2015 12:46

How did it go OP?

I'd love a proper 70s fringe but I wear glasses. What do we think?

JenniMoo · 22/04/2015 21:26

I did it. Not sure how I feel about it yet as its a massive change.
I've tried to upload a photo to my profile but not sure it's worked.

I can't see any photo,im sure it looks lovely. It is a big change though

Higgle · 23/04/2015 11:42

I've had a fringe since I've had hair - not high maintenance at all. It keeps the sun off your forehead so you don't get wrinkles too, huge saving on Botox! If my hair looks a bit droopy in the morning I just put a Velcro roller in my fringe and it all looks a lot better.

mizu · 23/04/2015 15:13

I've had one for about 5 years now and love it. It kind of divides into two parts naturally and I have it quite long - just on, so covering eyebrows - and I do nothing with it. Have never had to style it. And yes, dry shampoo is your friend.

BabyGanoush · 23/04/2015 15:25

Amelie, I have a round face, and witha fringe I look like a half witted country bumpkin
