Help with really, really grey hair!

Well, I've just been to the hairdressers (bloody monthly visit) to get rid of the grey roots. And when I say grey roots I mean about 3 inches regrowth in 4 weeks! My hairdresser basically told me that I am 99% grey which is very depressing as I am 41. My hair grows really fast so I am on a treadmill of hairdresser visits every 3 weeks as I'm a natural brunette. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to let it go grey just yet,I but I feel like I spend half my salary at the hairdresser and my free time! I've tried doing it myself but it looks horrendous. Help please!

99% greys much, much better than 50% that gives the awful salt & pepper mix!
In my humble opinion grey hair loves lovely on a younger woman - there is a sort of flawlessness about it. Once the skin ages then it's ageing but not before. I have couple of friends in their early 40s who are proud to be grey and look lovely…..

Go grey!! It is very freeing. I am 44 and have been grey since 38 ish. Got so bored of relentless dye sessions! Also it was so expensive. Know spend that money on nice clothes so I don't look like an old lady!Grin

AnnieMoor · 08/04/2015 18:47

I am with you as I have been at least 80% grey since I was 30 (now 44).

I am no way ready to embrace it - my hair is long and curly and I think I would look like a witch. I know it suits some people, but not me.

I have tried to go a bit lighter than my natural dark brown, but not light enough that the rapid re-growth doesn't show.

FiftyShadesOfNifty · 08/04/2015 18:51

love are you willing to share a photo?

Op I'm prob 99% grey too (have been since I was about 30). I dye my hair every 4 weeks at home using the same stuff they use at the hairdressers. It's v depressing but I'm not quite ready to go grey yet (35 now).

Loveleopardprint · 08/04/2015 19:11

Bit of a technophobe. Not sure how to share a photo on iPhone.

FiftyShadesOfNifty · 08/04/2015 19:27

Click on the paper clip icon I think?

Loveleopardprint · 08/04/2015 19:29

If I was grey I would just go full on grey and get a lilac/pastel rinse through it. I have about 30% of greys and it really annoys me. I wish I was just one or the other and not the salt and pepper thing that's going on just now. Nothing worse than a skunk stripe. Go lighter OP. Even blonde?

Clarabumps · 08/04/2015 19:32

Your hair really suits your colouring Love. That red lip is perfect on you.

Loveleopardprint · 08/04/2015 19:32

Darker photo. Hate having my photo taken!!

That's a new skill! Never posted an image before!!

Loveleopardprint · 08/04/2015 19:35

Thank you Clara! X

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 08/04/2015 19:36

I'm about 70% grey and I'm still in my 30s. It's a very expensive and time consuming problem and I am not at all interested in going grey yet (old skin, grew up in the sun, long hair that's too hard to grow out, etc). My solution is a semi in my natural tone but slightly lighter in colour, my hairdresser only uses about 1% activator - that makes the grey bits look like blondish highlights and the roots are less obvious. It's also cheaper than actual highlights.

DharmaBums · 08/04/2015 19:39

I'm really not ready for complete grey and I have mid-length very straight (lank) hair and I think I'd also look like a witch! I'm also overweight at the moment and have two DC's under 5, so not much time to look "polished" as all the gorgeous ladies with grey hair always look! I bet that's you loveloeopard!

AnnieMoor how much lighter did you go and how many extra weeks free from the hairdresser did you get from it?

loveleopard- beautiful. I love the colour and length of your hair.

Loveleopardprint · 08/04/2015 19:53

Thank you ilovemargaret. It has been a lovely boost getting nice comments.

I am trying to send you a pic dharma but not figured it out yet.

Loveleopardprint · 08/04/2015 23:27

Sorry Dharma I tried to pm photos but did not manage it.

DharmaBums · 08/04/2015 23:43

Don't worry loveleopard! I'm sure by everyone's comments you look great. Envy I've just googled grey hair and been on Pinterest and it definitely looks like it wouldn't suit me. Argh! Only option is to go blonde....platinum blonde might just cover it Angry

OP posts:
Loveleopardprint · 09/04/2015 08:00

Well blondes have more fun apparently!! Good luck with it.

SoupDragon · 09/04/2015 08:08

Switch to the desktop site on your ipad and you'll see photos.

I not ready to go grey yet. I think I would have a badger look rather than all over grey and I am SO not ready to be Cruella!

Aridane · 09/04/2015 08:11

Go lighter to avoid the 3 week treadmill, and to help the greys blend in?

Aridane · 09/04/2015 08:12

sorry - I mean, don't get coloured to your original brunette but to a lighter colour, assuming you don't want to embrace the grey

DharmaBums · 09/04/2015 15:45

Thanks SoupDragon - I did just that and saw the picture! Yes, loveleopard it does look really good on you, but you definitely pull it off.
Blonde/lighter it is for now at least.. Although asked DH last night and he would rather full grey than blonde. Men are weird!

OP posts:
Loveleopardprint · 09/04/2015 19:29

My DH loves my grey hair. Sees it as a sign of a strong woman who looks natural and doesn't worry about what others think. Don't get me wrong sometimes I think "should I dye it again" but I can't be bothered and DH and kids tell me not to.
