What "outerwear" will you wear in Spring? (utterly clueless)

I'm 40, reasonable figure, although short. I am pretty clueless when it comes to fashion, and tend to copy what I see around me. So, this spring I intend to wear a uniform of skinny jeans with converse and top (breton? haven't got one yet) or flared jeans with high wedges & top/blouse (nope, haven't actually got one of them yet either!) or a casual dress with sandals.

I live in Ireland though and the weather isn't always well behaved. So what the hell do I wear on top of my clothes?! I don't have a huge amount of money so need to make sure I buy the right thing, something that will go with most outfits (is that even possible?) and won't cost the earth. I have a nice denim blazer from Gap, years old but could still wear it but other than that I have no idea.

I need ideas please

HELP!

Trench coat would be a good option with the outfits you describe? In navy or beige, you can add a bright scarf if you feel too dull.

I have a long boucle cardigan coat thing from New Look but I'm in a slightly sunnier part of the country I suspect, it's mild today. But a patterned statement coat is a nice spring option - Zara and H and M have lots, if the rest of your wardrobe is fairly neutral.

macnab · 30/03/2015 13:16

Thanks Ballroom, I will check out trenchcoats. What about this

I like the seasalt one but not the gingham lining, bit picnic blanket...

Judydreamsofhorses · 30/03/2015 13:52

I'm in Scotland too, and have a bit of a "coat-robe" I've accumulated over the years for spring/summer. I have a denim jacket, a leather biker and leather blazer, plus a trench, and this year's addition is a bright boucle jacket/coat which, so far, it's been far too cold to wear! I can stick on extra layers, including scarves, with all of these. Leather jackets are especially good since they're wind-proof and keep the worst of the rain off.

ElizabethHoover · 30/03/2015 13:54

you know, we have this thread every year and every year I manage without.

IME in England, anyway, there isnt much use for these kind of jackets. It if is raining its pissing it down and you just need a waterproof and it goes from ' really quite cold' to warm in a flash

ElizabethHoover · 30/03/2015 13:57

ooh - just remembered. on one of those say 14- 6 degree days you get in May i DO wear my Tesco amazing Barbour copy.
Its an earlier version of this.www.clothingattesco.com/f+f/f+f-waxed-four-pocket-jacket/invt/bt510108

I wear my leather jacket in mid temps (spring, autumn). Also looking for a denim jacket which would also fit the bill re spring outerwear I think

mowglik · 30/03/2015 16:35

Oo and also been already wearing a thicker cocoon black cardigan with three quarter sleeves from tesco which goes with pretty much everything and is warm enough for the transition weather

bit like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=i01.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/32240384081_2/Women-s-vintage-loose-sweater-brandy-melville-kimono-cardigan-thick-coarse-cardigans-outerwear-gilet-long-femme.jpg&imgrefurl=www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Women-s-vintage-loose-sweater-brandy-melville-kimono-cardigan-thick-coarse-cardigans-outerwear-gilet-long-femme/1491364_32240384081.html&h=597&w=536&tbnid=7zllA887SKYMpM:&zoom=1&docid=W9C1_Jj8BbpyaM&ei=9GwZVefBAoKfPM_VgKAN&tbm=isch&client=safari&ved=0CCAQMygBMAE" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this

yazzy85 · 30/03/2015 17:10

I just ordered this one from Joules in the sale, very similar to the Seasalt style but cheaper and lining isn't checked.

yazzy85 · 30/03/2015 17:12

I like this shorter style as well, a bit pricey full price though

CointreauVersial · 30/03/2015 17:25

My Spring outerwear wardrobe includes a trench coat (just an Asda cheapy), a couple of coatigans (awful word, but you know what I mean), and I also have a suede biker jacket (no good in the rain, though).

daimbardiva · 30/03/2015 19:02

Mowglik love that mustard cardigan - so much that I've just ordered it! Looks like it will take a month to get here but for 20 odd quid I can live with that!

Twinklestein · 30/03/2015 19:13

Currently wearing leather jackets and fleece lined trench coats.

Not really warm enough for just a mac without a warm lining yet.

Do you have TK Maxx in Ireland? That's always good for jackets.

ElizabethHoover · 30/03/2015 19:17

waves cross at the cardigan thing

mowglik · 30/03/2015 19:19

daim I only posted that link to describe what j meant by cocoon cardigan but I really like it too, and have bookmarked it :/ may end up ordering it tonight Grin

stripytees · 30/03/2015 19:20

I don't think there's anything that works in all weathers, tbh.

I have a waterproof Seasalt Seafolly jacket in navy, a longer shower proof sand coloured coat, various blazers and jackets and knitwear for those days when I need something warm but not necessarily a coat/jacket.

MajesticWhine · 30/03/2015 19:27

I've been wearing a short beige trench from Zara. I really like it, although, some days I'm still wearing a thicker jacket because it's been so cold.

macnab · 02/04/2015 13:04

I just got this

Its much nicer on than in the picture, it gets great reviews with people saying it looks more expensive than it is. Am really pleased with it, I think it will see me through until the summer, and I can put it away then for another year Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/04/2015 14:00

I wear biker jackets when it's not raining, or a very lightweight cotton parka if it's wet. I also have a denim cropped jacket.

What I really need is a waterproof though, for warmish but wet days. They are all so, so ugly though. I've been dithering over this but navy makes me want to weep a bit tbh, and the others are vile.
