Why do Topshop do this?

I've just seen such a lovely dress at Topshop here. I had a thread a few days ago about wanting a wedding dress that wasn't weddingy and this would have been perfect, but what is going on with the back? I often find at Topshop that you see a lovely dress and then it has no back! There is no way I can go without a bra so there's no chance with this one - so frustrating! Sorry, just ahd to rant Angry

My actual wedding dress didn't even cost £600.

To whoever up thread said "I sometimes think topshop is designed for teenagers"..

It is! It's not supposed to be an adults shop is it?

Methe · 28/03/2015 16:52

Like Miss Selfridge .. Not supposed to be for anyone over university age.

FriendofBill · 28/03/2015 16:56

Ahem.
I'm at uni. 39.

nilbyname · 28/03/2015 16:56

This monsoon Sophia dress is similar and very pretty-

cashmerecardigans · 28/03/2015 17:00

That monsoon one is lovely, but I don't want full length in afraid

I don't think they're aiming their stuff at mature students either..

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 28/03/2015 17:05

You could get a dressmaker to cut 8 inches off the bottom of the Monsoon one and still have change from 600 quid (not a lot of change I suspect).

ohwhatapalava · 28/03/2015 17:13

I was going to suggest a dressmaker too, but perhaps for the one from Topshop that you like. I think it could be possible to have some sort of back added to it...

InQuiteAPickle · 28/03/2015 17:18

I don't think that the model is too skinny - she's very pale so maybe that's what makes people think she is thinner Confused?

I always see dresses that would look amazing if they were just above the knee but I try them on and they look like tops! Hmm I'm 5'3 so god knows what they look like on someone taller. It's so annoying!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 28/03/2015 17:24

If you've got £600 to spend you could get something much nicer in the net a porter sale or on the outnet

Dukketeater · 28/03/2015 17:36

£600 for stuck on gems and tulle... Wow!

SinglePringle · 28/03/2015 17:40

I'm 45 and shop in Top Shop. It's not just for teens.

mamapants · 28/03/2015 17:45

Agree with a poster up thread that the dress is designed for someone very.slim with small breasts, the back is a feature.
When I was slim, pre kids and had small breasts my best features were my back and shoulders so I liked to show them off.
It's very elegant

Mrsjayy · 28/03/2015 17:56

I can see it being worn for a bare foot windswept beach wedding

Justusemyname · 28/03/2015 18:02

There's only one left.

petitchoupette · 28/03/2015 19:31

Haha, i actually love that dress, reminds me of seventies glamour!
Possibly shit polyester though, with shiny bits attached.

I do like the back on this one, but many available right now are an abomination. I think that they do this to impress the younger market - to make their stuff stand out with 'an edge'.

There's this double layer type dress in there at the moment and both myself and my mum saw it and said 'ooh isn't that nice!' and then when we turned it around there was a massive gaping saggy hole where the back ought to be.
Hey, I guess it saves them money by cutting out material, like they do with their sleeveless frocks through winter!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 28/03/2015 20:00

This one from Monsoon is lovely.

burnishedsilver · 28/03/2015 20:50

Is it a mistake? Is it supposed to be £160?

StillScottish · 28/03/2015 21:41

Or even just £60?!?

squoosh · 28/03/2015 22:46

A nylon Topshop dress for £600!

Lordy me but Topshop have got ideas above their station in the past few years.

It's like some awful spangly number from Strictly Come Dancing.

ethelb · 28/03/2015 22:51

My seamstress (fitting my wedding dress I got off the rack) said you can put cups into dresses so you don't have to wear a bra. Would that work? Or would you need to add boning too?

cerealqueen · 28/03/2015 23:12

Sorry OP, that dress looks lie a rag and does not deserve the £600 price tag.
I am sure Mumsnet style gurus can come up with better!

cashmerecardigans · 29/03/2015 00:02

Yes I think I would need more than cups as I think it would need more structure. Agree it's expensive but maybe I was viewing it as compared to wedding dresses, so didn't seem too bad. I'll stick with looking for my Vivienne Westwood dress second hand!

I pretty much stopped shopping in Topshop for years but recently rediscovered it a a bit and I'm 35. The trick is to go to one in a boring suburban high street where they just have all of the good quality basics and not much of the edgy stuff. Have recently bought this foresty green shirt dress and this [http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?searchTerm=geo+dress&storeId=12556&productId=18936477&urlRequestType=Base&categoryId=&langId=-1&productIdentifier=product&catalogId=33057 geo textured dress]] - did have to size up for a less clingy fit though.
