I've got a big, important party coming up. There's no way I can justify the expense. I've sent back loads of dresses. Tell me I'll send this one back too?

Sorry to derail thread but Eastpoint are Matches doing 30% off? I couldn't find anything, is there a voucher code?

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 23/03/2015 21:08

I have the navy DVF (in standard length). It is beautiful, fits like a glove, is lovely non scratchy lace and has detailing that a cheaper dress wouldn't (the lace cuffs and neckline are properly done). Also you can get £50 off your first order on the DVF website.
When you're the one wearing it, it's about more than how it looks to other people.
Sorry OP! Wink

MaryWestmacott · 23/03/2015 21:16

Boden do a lace dress too

But I like the Reiss one and the Monsoon one!

Eastpoint · 23/03/2015 21:19

Cathyandclaire - it's a code which expires midnight tomorrow. The card says 'Your unique code', you could probably call them and get them to offer it, you have to spend over £300. They've discounted for me in the past (quite a while ago). Sorry, I just saw the £100 off when you spend £300, I've only just looked at the small print.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 23/03/2015 21:22

This one is very similar to the DVF one and on offer at the moment.

I really want this dress, please tell me it's awful
bialystockandbloom · 23/03/2015 21:29

Sorry, I agree with blair on this - some of the others look cheaper. I think lace is one of those materials that when it's good quality looks absolutely beautiful, but any hint of scratchy nylon, and it looks shit. I'd rather spend £300 on something really lovely than £150 on something which has the potential to look cheap and nasty.

A friend has the DVF lace one from last year (in plum colour), it is gorgeous.

I'd go for the DVF one. You'll get more wear out of it in the long term. The cream colour is lovely.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 23/03/2015 21:30

Love the DVF one; it is finished so much more nicely than the others. You can tell that the lace is a much nicer quality too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/03/2015 21:34

Not everybody can afford £300 on a dress though, and the OP has already said that she can't possibly justify the expense.

TwoKidsAndCounting · 23/03/2015 21:38

It's horrid

bialystockandbloom · 23/03/2015 21:40

No really, twokids please say what you really think Grin

Good point about not being able to justify cost - didn't twig that in the OP.

So I've changed my mind. OP it's awful.

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 23/03/2015 21:46

She did say that she was just about to buy it though.

mammuzzamia · 23/03/2015 21:49

The DVF will be amazing. If you can afford it, do it. You'll get loads of wear out of it

mammuzzamia · 23/03/2015 21:52

The monsoon dress looks like a mourning dress to me. Sorry. I think it's the combo of highly decorative drapey lace, and faux period style.

rubybleu · 23/03/2015 21:55

Look on eBay? I recently (last month) bought a brand new, tagged DVF Zarita dress for my wedding reception for about £150.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 23/03/2015 22:14

OP you can hire a Zarita from Girl Meets Dress for £70.
Also, I don't know what size you are but there are some heavily reduced at Boutique1 and Van Mildert (half price ish).
I took the "can't justify it" with a pinch of salt because you wouldn't have started the thread otherwise Wink

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 23/03/2015 22:15

Oh and congrats ruby - I originally wanted to get a cream long Zarita for my wedding but in the end it didn't suit the venue. But I'll be wearing mine for my hen do this weekend :)

haggardoldwitch · 24/03/2015 07:01

I'm so excited. Thanks to BlairWadorf I've found one one Van Mildert but it's a size 14 and I'm a biggish 12. Can you tell me if it comes up small fingers crossed?

OP posts:
Floisme · 24/03/2015 07:15

It sounds like you've already found something but I was just coming on to say I think £300+ for a party dress is a waste unless you either have loads of money or go to parties all the time.

I'm sure the DVF is much better made but the lighting will be low and most people will be too pissed to notice the difference.

Anyway hope you manage to sort the sizing out.

haggardoldwitch · 24/03/2015 07:19

I would normally agree with you Floisme but this is for a very special party that will only happen once Wink

Sadly, reading reviews, it looks like DVF do vanity sizing so the 14 will be too big.

piercedprincess · 24/03/2015 07:28

The Monsoon one is way more unique and stylish, and far, far prettier. If I had to choose between the two I'd deffo go for the Monsoon one.

Shonajay · 24/03/2015 07:38

If it was for your wedding day of something, and you loved it then yes but how on earth to people justify spending that on a dress!? I'm gobsmacked. We are pretty comfortable but it'd would have to be stand out totally unusual for me to even consider it. I've seen so many like this. If you're going to a party with folks wearing that sort of cost of dress, people will assume you paid the same and not give it a second glance.

Spadequeen · 24/03/2015 07:47

Shona she doesn't need to justify it to anyone. If she can afford it and she likes it she should get it, it's no one else's business what she spends.

Personally, I couldn't afford that dress so wouldn't get it but there are plenty of people who can whether you or I like it or not.

ZeroFunDame · 24/03/2015 07:53

It's true that lace dresses are a bit of a visual cliché but the DVF is beautifully fitted ...

Definitely make sure you get exactly the right size - or you'll lose the benefit of that particular dress.

Don't compromise if it's a really special occasion.

hankyspanky · 24/03/2015 08:00

I bought practically the same dress in cream for £9.99 from Primark, it was reduced in the sale to £4.99!
I still have it and have never worn it.

You're welcome to have it if you want it? PM me your details and I can stick it in the post.

CrispyFern · 24/03/2015 08:05

It's a bit boring, for a one-off party.
To me anyway.
