I shop at almost all the same places that I always have. Topshop, zara, whistles, gap, h&m, uniqlo. A few other places too like baukjen or hush.

I don't feel any need to change just because I've turned 40.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 21/03/2015 22:11

Top Shop. And today I bought a couple of things in New Look, which I haven't before, but I liked them.

shinywhiteteeth · 21/03/2015 22:16

Its not so much about being 40, just that shops dont seem to cater for this age group very well - in my opinion only! Would like some nice smart casual stuff that doesnt sparkle or fall apart. New look is good for shoes and casual stuff.

Zara, Mango, Banana Republic, H&M, Gap -

Do you know what suits you and what you want to wear? Maybe worth visiting an in-store stylist to help you put together some new looks?

shinywhiteteeth · 21/03/2015 22:27

Think thats the problem Heehiles, I hate shopping so my wardrobe is a bit mismatched. Not great at knowing what suits me so end up sending stuff back.

Whistles, Gap, Reiss, Plumo, Toast, Mint Velvet off the top of my head. If you send a lot of stuff back, John Lewis do free next day delivery to your local Waitrose and you can also return via the shop.

oigetoffmycheese · 21/03/2015 22:33

I hate shopping too. I do online only. I google free delivery/ discount codes etc

Make sure you only use the ones who do free returns though!

Saurus72 · 21/03/2015 22:36

Whistles, Cos, & Other Stories, Jigsaw, Hobbs, Jaeger outlet, White Company. I think that pretty much covers it. To avoid endless schlepping around endless shops, aimlessly searching for stuff, I now usually either buy online if the brand is reliable and I know the sizing (Whistles is usually fine, as is Jaeger), or if a shop has mad sizing/fit (Cos/Hobbs, I'm looking at you), I look online to narrow down my options before I go into the actual shop. Last weekend, I went to Cos after doing an online shortlist, tried everything on and bought nothing because Cos seem to be going through sack dress hell at the moment. Saved me some money I guess.

oigetoffmycheese · 21/03/2015 22:50

Oh and ASOS. Loads of brands and free delivery and returns.

HeeHiles · 21/03/2015 22:53

First of all think about what you need clothes for, school run, work clothes, going out day/evening wear etc

Second, cull the wardrobe, get rid of everything that doesn't fit, you don't wear or like and look at what you have left.

Third go and see an in-store stylist - tell them what you need and get an idea of the things you like and feel good (and comfortable) in.

Or if you feel brave enough to post a picture and we can style you?

shinywhiteteeth · 21/03/2015 23:13

Thanks for all the suggestions! Definitley need to organise my thoughts on what clothes I need for different situations and ruthlessly cull the ones I have!

I shop at all the same places I did 39

Penguinsaresmall · 21/03/2015 23:28

I buy most of my stuff in TK Maxx - I also like FatFace and also get stuff from Joe Browns which is v similar. I also don't consciously dress differently now I'm older; for one thing I'm in far better shape than I was ten or even twenty years ago....

I think the only issue with age is that I can't get away with wearing anything cheap and tacky anymore - because now it just looks cheap and tacky!

ChaiseLounger · 21/03/2015 23:33

You are all so 'hip', I feel completely fuddy duddy!

XiCi · 21/03/2015 23:36

I tend to shop online so get alot from ASOS. Also Warehouse, Oasis, Zara, &other stories, French Connection, Espirit, River Island amongst others

weasle · 21/03/2015 23:56

I agree that I can't get away with cheap stuff as much now.

I like gap and fat face for weekends. Boden, M and S for work. Phase 8 sometimes. I also need some shopping inspiration!

IndigoApple · 22/03/2015 00:16

Not feeling inspired, usually Warehouse, Next, M&S, occasional thing from River Island. Oasis but none near me. Loved Dorothy Perkins since I was about 14 until a few years ago but it's dire now! Will try some suggestions from this thread.

bettykt · 22/03/2015 06:37

Me&Em, Baukjen, Uniqlo, JCrew, Massimo Dutti, Cos, Jaeger Outlet for work clothes. Picked up some flared jeans in River Island, Top Shop do good jeans too. Haven't bought anything from Zara or Mango for years.

GeorginaWorsley · 22/03/2015 09:24

Mint velvet
White company
Whistles
Reiss
Boden
marks
hobbs
river island
cos, other stories but am in North so none nearby and online bit hit and miss with these brand's sizing
jigsaw
sandwich
occasionally fat face and white stuff
french connection.
Clarks for shoes

burnishedsilver · 22/03/2015 09:30

At the risk of sounding like my mother, the issue I have is quality. I don't shop at the same places that I did when I was younger because the quality has sunk so low. I don't want polyester or acrylic. It's left me struggling to find clothes. I've accepted that I'll have to pay more for clothes but going up a price bracket hasn't solved the polyester problem.

KissyBoo · 22/03/2015 09:45

Autograph cashmere
Boden (only Bretons and Boat neck tops) and occasional maxi dress.
Woolovers for cropped cardigans and casual, hooded jumpers.
Next esp for shoes and boots as they fit me so well
Fly London because nothing is more comfortable.

I do most of my shopping online as the high street is so dire. I buy a lot of my cashmere on eBay. I like a lot of fairtrade stuff too for necklaces etc.

I love The Jewellery stop for unusual accessories that last. Their pendents are striking- which is my thing.

I have a pretty eclectic taste you could say.....

winterinmadeira · 22/03/2015 09:49

I shop at the same places I've always done- gap, Zara, white stuff, a bit of Boden (if it takes my fancy and is not overpriced) and French connection for jeans. I pop into top shop too if I'm not feeling my age that day!

oigetoffmycheese · 22/03/2015 09:50

Not sure I've ever been described as hip Wink but I agree on the quality thing.

I won't wear polyester or cheap thin fabrics it if you scrutinise the product info online well enough you can work out what is good etc.

It does mean you buy and return A LOT. But that's still preferable to shopping in store for me.

Saurus72 · 22/03/2015 10:31

burnishedsilver don't get me started on the polyester issue, it drives me crazy. Paying more definitely doesn't mean things will be made from natural fabrics - Whistles regularly charge £200 for a polyester skirt. Who exactly would want to pay that much for that? I just cannot understand it.

CoconutAmericano · 22/03/2015 10:45

Im 38 and mainly shop in:
Cos
M&S for their jeans
Massimo Dutti
Primark

When I was in my 20's I mainly shopped in:
Oasis
Warehouse
H&M
Primark

That was when polyester and dress length wasn't a concern.
