Mulberry handbags... worth the money??

Rockinghorse123 · 15/03/2015 21:37

I have wanted a mulberry for years and years DH has been working ridiculous hours recently and so has said to treat myself.

I will likely go for the Bayswater or Alexa but I have heard that the quality isn't what it once was. I would hate to spend all that money (its a massive once on a lifetime treat for me) just to be disapointed.

Has anyone got any experiences or opinions on whether they are still worth the money?

I would never buy another one. I have a Bayswater and it looks so tatty. Definitely not made how they used to.

Boomf · 15/03/2015 21:45

I say ... No.

I have three. A Daria in oxblood, an Antony messenger in black and a small messenger in tan. The Daria is a little tatty... The strap is fraying and I'm hardly heavy on it. It's just not good enough for something that was almost six hundred quid. Would I buy one again? Nope.

In the past few weeks I have bought two new handbags ... A Jenna bucket bag from LK Bennett in navy and an Alicia bag in tan from Jigsaw. £450 and £149 respectively. So both cheaper than the Mulberries. And I've got to say they are far superior in quality. The leather on both just feels softer, more supple and the finish on both of them is just better

So my advice would be don't waste your money. You can still have a lovely handbag that's amazing quality but cheaper and nicer than the mulberry

Rockinghorse123 · 15/03/2015 21:45

Oh no. 2 friends in real life have said that too. I love them but it's such alot of money if it's not going to last!

Is there any other brands you would recommend? I want something lovely but classic, so that it will never go out of fashion. A decent size and probably black so I can wear with anything.

Boomf · 15/03/2015 21:46

Do look at the Jenna - it's SO lovely in real life!

Also check out the Chloe Marcie which is a gorgeous bag and very treaty

Rockinghorse123 · 15/03/2015 21:47

X post boomf thank you for your recommendations. I'm going to have a shop around I think. As you say for the money you expect quality!

I wouldn't buy a mulberry these days. There are concerns about a drop in quality and an unjustified hike in prices.
Get a nice Louis Vuitton, check out their website, some lovely pieces priced very reasonably and they last forever.

Boomf · 15/03/2015 21:50

Definitely. You've got to be sure about it and I'm just not convinced by mulberry anymore sadly. I was very tempted by the ' circus' bag by Anya HIndmarch as well which is lovely with some quirky detailing.

But right now I absolutely love the Jenna bag. I compared it to my Mulberries and the leather is just so much nicer. I'm not sure why quality is down with mulberry though

seaoflove · 15/03/2015 21:55

I think they jacked up their prices one too many times. I have a Bayswater I bought seven years ago (for £495!) and although it was a huge amount of money, it felt worth it for something that was well made. I look after my bags too, so it's still looking good after all this time. The same bag now is £895, and not only would I never spend that sum on a bag, but nor would I feel like it was value for money.

Have you considered going to one of their outlets? Prices there are usually 30% off.

FrugalFashionista · 15/03/2015 21:57

I have had a Bayswater for a year or two - it was an under-warranty replacement for a Lily that broke the second or third time I wore it. It's a good work bag and I love flying with it but wouldn't use it in my free time. It is heavy and has no shoulder strap. The corners are a bit scuffed so it is going downhill quickly.

I also have two Baby Marcies. I wear them constantly. Much better CPW Wink

Pippin8 · 15/03/2015 21:58

I bought an Alexa 18 months ago & have used it everyday. It's still in fab condition & I feel a total investment.

I did buy the protective spray for £10 & use it every couple of months.
I'm going for coach next though, just for something different.

carrie74 · 16/03/2015 08:15

I live near the factory, and have several mulberries, mostly bought in the factory store. Once they started hiking their full retail prices up about 3-4 years ago, I stopped buying. Also some designs seemed to be moving away from what Mulberry stood for IMO. I actually won a Bayswater in a competition and immediately sold it on - it's a REALLY heavy bag, and I find the shoulder straps too awkward a length. My favourite Mulberyy bag that I own is a Daria satchel, but I don't like the big gold plaque on the front.

Having said all this, I have found the quality to be better than any other brand I've owned (granted I've had no other designer bags, but an LK Bennett bag I bought hasn't worn as well as Mulberry. I also think many Mulberries tend to look better as they age), and I believe the old prices were fair. But £800? Nope. Too much.

pictish · 16/03/2015 08:21

Of course they're not worth the money - they're bags! They just hold your stuff, same as any other bag.
However, seeing as people have stupidly shown more than willing to hand over vast sums of cash to facilitate this holding of stuff, the Mulberry bags are indeed stylish and of a good quality.
I don't think they're anything like several hundreds of pounds of good quality, but if you must throw your money at a badge, it might as well be a Mulberry one.

MsMcWoodle · 16/03/2015 08:21

Depends how much you like them.
I have a few now and love them. The ones I have are very good quality, except for the one in silky snake leather which is not as robust.
They do seem to be ahead of the curve with their designs too.

MrsC2810 · 16/03/2015 08:27

I wouldn't buy one nowadays, the quality has def changed. I have the Bayswater and the Alexa but I got mine a few years ago and they are holding up well, my friend bought one last year and the strap broke within 5 months.
I'd get either Marc Jacobs or Michael Kors. I love the MK Selma bag, and MJ bags are really good quality.
im currently lusting over a Givenchy :)

pictish · 16/03/2015 08:36

Didn't know the quality had dropped so much. My smil has several years old Mulberry bags, and I do think they're lovely. I don't think they're so significantly lovely as to be worth paying through the nose for, as plenty of bags at a fraction of the price will look just as good and last just as long as a Mulberry...but obviously those bags won't show your status to the world in the same way. If advertising how marvellous you are is important to you, (as it is to my smil) then you'll have suck up the grossly inflated prices for what is actually a basic item.

Slongette · 16/03/2015 08:52

I got an Alexa 3/4 years ago and tbh it's a little tatty. I had to send it back to get fixed once as the catch fell off, and the handle is frayed Angry.

I also have a Roxanne (literally worlds heaviest bag) and a Phoebe which are about 10 yrs old and are still in excellent condition.

My sister has a couple of Marc Jacobs bags which are in my opinion much better quality.

Rockinghorse123 · 16/03/2015 08:54

pictish nope not about showing my status to the world at all. Just something that I really like and have lusted over for years. We're very fortunate that we can afford it as a one off treat. It's a huge amount of money for me to spend on a bag, we can afford it, but it will certainly be the only time I buy such an item. I just wanted opinions before spending so much.

Everyone else thank you for your advice. I'm going to Cheshire Oaks in a few weeks so I will look in the outlet there. I'm going to look at the other brands mentioned too.

OP posts:
pictish · 16/03/2015 09:02

Yeah I used to lust over a Mulberry too. And then when it came down to it and I'd had a windfall and could afford to treat myself to one (at long last!) I found the reality was that I couldn't do it! There was a voice in my head reasoning "it's just a bag...it's just a bag...it's just an ordinary bag...it's not a better bag than a cheaper bag, it's just an ordinary bag with a badge on it" - and not being of a status pushing nature, I didn't buy one in the end. I bought a different bag for £140 and kept my cash.
So that's where I'm coming from. Sorry to be negative, but you did ask. x

pictish · 16/03/2015 09:07

I suppose I'm trying to say that if you're not bothered about the logo, buy something (a lot) cheaper, but if the logo is the pull, then it might as well be Mulberry.

AgathaF · 16/03/2015 09:26

I want something lovely but classic, so that it will never go out of fashion - everything goes out of fashion sooner or later, no matter which designer name it has branded on it.

haggardoldwitch · 16/03/2015 09:27

I've got 2 Bayswater (regular & small) that I've had about 8 years. Cost £500 but I use the big one every day. It's got better with age unlike it's owner.
Mine are oak & I think fairly timeless.

Carpaccio · 16/03/2015 10:20

I have quite a few Mulberry bags and the oldest one is around 10 years old. It is an oak Bayswater in the old Darwin leather and it is worn - I have used it loads and have not babied it. It has been my carry-on, weekend bag, bag for Uni with heavy books, shopping bag and I even think my dog has been sitting in it - she most certainly uses it as a pillow if given the chance. It has never been sent to Mulberry to be repaired.

I have newer bags, such as a Lizzie bucket bag, Silky Snake Bayswater, Mini Alexa and they have not been used as much as the oak Bays and I have been good to these bags.
They are looking worn - the coloured bags (green, purple) are losing their colour in some areas. Some of them have been in for repair. The Silky Snake Bays feels like it needs to be sent in for repair soon.

I have a new Antony in Oak Natural leather (I think that's what it's called) and I am not massively impressed with the look of the leather compared to the old Darwin. I've seen some older natural leather Bayswaters around, and they look like crumbled up parchment paper. The leather just isn't nice and loads of the newer leathers are just thin and flimsy.

With regards to the colour coming off the coloured bags, Mulberry can't help. They advise to use some colourless product to nourish the leather, but that doesn't bring back the colour if it has already gone.
The bags are not made to last - I feel like they were years ago. My mum had some of the really old bags and they lasted 15-20 years or so - with two kids not being careful with them.

When talking about expensive, poor quality products, I think it is important to consider the service as the bags will probably have to be sent in for repair.
I find it difficult to say anything nice about it.

The staff dealing with the repair request (over the phone, in the shops) are difficult. Some are good, but it takes so long to get it sorted.
Then the repair itself takes weeks.
Then the bag is sent back to the shop - sometimes it gets lost so they can't find the bag and you end up wasting your time, even have to come back some other time when they've finally found the bag.

Sometimes they can't do the repair properly. I had a really nice bag which I had not used much but it needed to be repaired but they only had some new leather, not the same type and colour as the original bag. The repair went ahead, I used the bag twice before the bit that had been repaired with the new leather looked really awful. I ended up getting my money back for that bag.

I've had several other items replaced because they couldn't repair them - purses with discoloured zips/metal bits, inking going sticky and ruining my clothes and so on.

In the grand scheme of things, Mulberry has gone from being awesome to being disgraceful. Even when going to the shops to have a look, I get annoyed with the lack of service.

Wow, that's long. If it was too long and you didn't read it here's the summary: Mulberry is not worth it, buy something else.

Weebirdie · 16/03/2015 10:22

My daughters latest Mulberry looks like something from Nine West or Aldo.

pictish · 16/03/2015 10:26

Wow...and you'd think they'd have service to match the price tag. What with you having spent so much and being a valued customer.
That's poor.

Btw - I'd expect to get 20 years out of a £500+ bag.

Boomf · 16/03/2015 10:33

I don't think it's about ' showing off your status.' What's wrong with having something - be it a bag, a piece of jewellery or whatever - that you love, that you wanted and that you think is beautiful?

People on here get very funny about handbags. We don't all want to tote about our stuff in a Sainsbury's carrier bag
